Schlage ND96 Grade 1 Storeroom Vandlgard, Cylindrical Lock, Rhodes Lever, FSIC, Less Core, 2-3/4" Backset

Schlage Lock Company ND series Cylindrical Locks

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified ND series locks. These locks are put through extreme levels of testing and are proven to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque-more than 2-1/2 times the grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock’s superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles. All ND series locks including electronic functions, ligature-resistant trims, and ground-breaking, high-visibility status indication trims use the common cylindrical ANSI 161L door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications where grade 1 strength and security are desired.

Features:

  • No access with minimum 3,100 in-lbs of lever torque (2.6x BHMA, for general abuse)
  • No access with minimum 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull (8x BHMA, for pry-bar attacks)
  • No access with minimum 100 vertical impacts (20x BHMA, for sledgehammer attacks)
  • Near-zero droop and wobble beyond 16 million cycles (after 16x BHMA) – without the use of set screws or O-rings

Schlage ND96-JD-RHO-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND96 storeroom function actually do when someone grabs the outside lever?
The outside lever on the ND96 is always locked, but it rotates freely instead of resisting. That is the Vandlgard clutching action: pulling or wrenching on a locked outside lever spins it rather than transmitting force into the chassis, so the lock survives abuse that would break a rigid lever. The key in the outside lever retracts the latchbolt only, it never leaves the lever unlocked. Inside lever is always free for immediate egress, so the door stays code-compliant for exit at all times. Function is ANSI F86.
2) The ND96 says less core. What do I still have to buy to make it work?
Less core means the lock ships without a cylinder core, so you supply and key the core yourself. Two cylinder builds are offered: J, Schlage full size interchangeable core (FSIC), and B, small format interchangeable core (SFIC). Pick the one that matches the cores your master key system already uses, then order cores keyed to your system. This is the normal way a facility with an existing keyway buys locks, because the locksmith drops in cores from stock rather than rekeying pinned cylinders.
3) Can I key a Schlage ND96 into an existing Best or Corbin Russwin system?
The ND series supports 10 non-Schlage cylinders, Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Sargent and Yale among them, through less cylinder configurations. For a small format IC house running Best cores, order the B (SFIC) build and drop your own cores in. Keying formats also include 6-pin conventional, FSIC, SFIC and 7-pin SL, with open, restricted, Primus, master keying and construction keying available on the key system side.
4) Should I use a Vandlgard ND96 or a standard ND80 storeroom lock?
Both are ANSI F86 storeroom: outside lever locked, key retracts the latch, inside lever always free. The difference is what happens under abuse. On the ND80 the locked outside lever is rigid, so anyone forcing it loads the chassis directly. On the ND96 the Vandlgard clutch lets the locked outside lever spin free, which is what you want on school corridors, dorms, stairwells, and any exterior or high-traffic opening where levers get yanked. For a quiet interior storage room, the ND80 is the simpler build.
5) Is the ND96 storeroom function legal on an exit door, or do I need something that lets people out?
It is fine for egress. On the ND96 the inside lever is always free, so anyone inside opens the door by turning the lever with no key, no knowledge and no special operation. The security is one-directional: the outside lever stays locked at all times and the key only retracts the latch. Compare that with the double cylinder ND66, ND82 and ND70 x 80 functions, which Schlage explicitly cautions against on any egress door as a life safety hazard.
6) What is the closest Grade 1 storeroom-function cylindrical lever lock to a Schlage ND96?
The ND96 is a Grade 1 storeroom-function cylindrical lever lock with Vandlgard free-spinning outside lever, and the outside lever is always locked while the key retracts the latch only. Among Grade 1 cylindrical locks, the Dexter C1000 series covers the same heavy-duty cylindrical family in keyed functions such as Entry/Office and Classroom, and Corbin Russwin's CL3300 series lock lever is Grade 1 cylindrical as well. If the opening specifically needs storeroom function, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a storeroom-function lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt, at Grade 2 rather than Grade 1.
7) Is there a lighter-duty storeroom lever lock than the Schlage ND96 for a low-traffic interior door?
Yes. The ND96 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty commercial lock built for abusive-traffic openings. For a lower-traffic storeroom door, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever fitting doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Both keep the storeroom function - key entry from outside, free egress inside - at a Grade 2 chassis instead of Grade 1.
8) What should be used instead of an ND96 storeroom lock on a door that needs to lock down from inside the classroom?
The ND96 is storeroom function: the outside lever is always locked and the key only retracts the latch, so nobody can change its locked state from inside the room. For an opening that needs a classroom lockdown, the Dexter C1000 classroom security lock is a Grade 1 clutching keyed cylindrical lever built for that function, and the Dexter C1000 classroom lock is the Grade 1 classroom-function version. The Cal-Royal AG03 is a classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the ND96 standard backset.
9) What is the difference between an ND96 storeroom lock and an entry/office lever like the Dexter C1000 or Hager 2525?
On the ND96, the outside lever is permanently fixed - the only way in from outside is the key, and there is no way for an occupant to leave the door unlocked. An entry/office lever changes that: the Dexter C1000 Entry/Office is a Grade 1 clutching keyed cylindrical lever for openings that need to be set unlocked during business hours, and the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle fitting doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Choose storeroom when the door must stay secure at all times, entry/office when someone needs to hold it unlocked.
10) What replaces an ND96 storeroom lock on an opening that needs to be released by an access control system?
The ND96 is a mechanical, non-electronic cylindrical lock. Where the opening has to be released electrically, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail-safe electrified cylindrical lever lock running 12VAC/DC and fitting doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, offered with the NZ lever and D rose. It keeps the Grade 1 cylindrical chassis while adding the electrified release the ND96 does not have.
11) Is the ND96 tough enough for a high-abuse opening in a school or apartment building?
It is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lock that exceeds BHMA A156.2 for grade 1. Tested numbers: no access at a minimum 3,100 in-lb of lever torque (2.6x BHMA), no access at a minimum 1,600 lb offset lever pull against pry bar attack, and no access after a minimum 100 vertical impacts. It shows near-zero droop or wobble beyond 16 million cycles without set screws or O-rings, which is the failure mode property managers actually see, levers sagging after a few years on a busy door.
12) Can I mix ND96 storeroom locks with other ND functions on the same doors and swap them later?
Yes, and that is the main reason facilities standardize on the series. All ND locks, including the electronic functions, ligature-resistant trims and status indicator trims, use the common cylindrical ANSI 161L door preparation. So a door prepped for an ND96 storeroom takes an ND70 classroom, ND80 storeroom, ND53 entrance or an electrified function later with no new prep. There are 31 mechanical functions in the family to pick from.
13) What is a cheaper Grade 2 storeroom lever if I do not need Grade 1 vandal resistance?
Two Grade 2 storeroom levers cover lighter duty openings. The Hager 2580 storeroom lock with Withnell lever fits doors 1-3/8 to 2 inches. The Cal-Royal AG05 storeroom lockset has a deadlocking latchbolt and covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Neither is a clutching lever, so on a corridor or exterior door where levers get abused the Grade 1 Vandlgard chassis is the one that survives. Both Grade 2 options suit interior storage, janitor and mechanical rooms.
14) What other Grade 1 clutching cylindrical levers could I use instead of a Schlage ND96?
Two Grade 1 alternatives with clutching chassis. Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series is a vandal resistant cylindrical lever, fire rated, fitting 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, though the CL3110 is the passage/closet function, not storeroom. Dexter C1000 Series is a Grade 1 clutching keyed line covering 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, offered in classroom, classroom security and entry/office functions. Falcon K Series is Grade 1 heavy duty, fire rated, with the widest thickness range of the group at 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches, though the K101 is passage function.
15) Is there an electrified version of this lock, and what power does it need?
The ND96 itself is a mechanical lock, no electronics. The series does offer 6 wired functions if you need the door on an access control system: autodetecting 12-24V DC input at +/- 10 percent, switch-selectable fail safe or fail secure set on the chassis, modular request to exit rated 3A at 125VAC / 2A at 30VDC, and current draw of 0.23 amps maximum with 0.01 amps holding. Because the whole series shares the ANSI 161L prep, a mechanical ND96 door can be converted to a wired function later without reworking the door.
16) Can a passage lever be used in place of a Schlage ND96?
No - a passage lever has no cylinder and cannot secure the opening. The ND96 is a keyed single-cylinder storeroom lock. Passage levers such as the Falcon K101, a Grade 1 heavy-duty non-keyed cylindrical lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, the Falcon T101 Grade 1 heavy-duty passage lever, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 vandal-resistant passage/closet lever, and the Design Hardware X75 Grade 1 flat-lever passage lockset all match the ND96 on Grade 1 chassis strength but latch only. Use one of those on the openings in the run that never need to lock, and the ND96 where a key is required.
17) What matches a Schlage ND96 on an inactive leaf or a door that only needs a pull?
The ND96 has a working chassis and latch, so it is not the part for an inactive leaf. For fixed trim on the same run of doors, the BEST 9K series 1DT single dummy trim is a Grade 1 non-keyed heavy-duty cylindrical lever dummy, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy-duty single dummy cylindrical lever from the 5400 series. The BEST 7KC series single dummy trim is the medium-duty Grade 2 equivalent if the leaf sees lighter handling.
18) What is the difference between an ND96 storeroom lock and an institution or asylum function lock like the Dexter C1000 ASYL?
On the ND96 the inside lever is always free, so the room can be exited at any time. An institution or asylum lock keeps both levers fixed so a key is needed from either side: the Dexter C1000 asylum lock is a Grade 1 F87 cylindrical lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is an asylum/institution function cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. Those suit utility and secured spaces where egress is controlled; the ND96 suits storerooms where egress must never be blocked.
19) Which lever locks take a Schlage keyway so a storeroom door can stay on the same key system as an ND96?
The ND96 is a keyed single-cylinder lock available in FSIC and SFIC cylinder formats. If the rest of a building runs on a Schlage C key system, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever and AG03 classroom lever are both offered with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS carries a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. For Yale hardware on the same system, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit.
20) Will a Grade 2 or Grade 3 residential lever hold up where an ND96 is specified?
They are built to different duty levels. The ND96 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty commercial lock. Levers such as the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage and 300BRNL Breton privacy are Grade 3 and fit doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, the Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance/office is Grade 3 with a solid brass forged body, and the Callan Artino and Bennett entrance leversets are Grade 3. Those belong on interior residential openings; a commercial storeroom specified at Grade 1 calls for a Grade 1 chassis.
21) What is a keyless alternative to an ND96 for a storeroom that too many people carry keys to?
The ND96 secures the outside lever with a key cylinder. Where key control has become the problem, the Lockey 1150 is a heavy-duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination fitting doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch and requires no power or credential, and the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad lever lock. Both trade the key cylinder for a code, so rekeying becomes a code change rather than a cylinder swap.
22) What finish should I order to match the rest of the hardware in the building?
Ten finishes are offered across the ND series: 605/US3 bright brass, 606/US4 satin brass, 612/US10 satin bronze, 613/US10B oil rubbed bronze, 619/US15 satin nickel, 622/US19 matte black, 625/US26 bright chrome, 626/US26D satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643e/716 aged bronze. Satin chrome 626 is the standard commercial spec and is what the FSIC and SFIC storeroom builds come in. 626AM is the one to specify for healthcare and food service where an antimicrobial coating is called out.
23) I need matching dummy trim on the inactive leaf of a pair. Does the ND series cover that?
Yes. ND170 is single dummy trim, a fixed lever on one side with no latch or chassis, used as a pull or to match inactive trim. ND172 is the double dummy with fixed levers both sides. Order the same lever design and finish as the ND96 and the pair reads as one set. If the old prep leaves a latch hole showing, latch cover plates are available under part number 47269199.
24) What lever lock suits a restroom door when an ND96 storeroom lock is the wrong function?
A storeroom lock like the ND96 keeps the outside lever permanently fixed, which is not what a restroom needs. For privacy function, the Arrow MK02-TA is a non-keyed privacy cylindrical lock with a Tudor knob, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, the Hager 2540 privacy cylindrical lock uses the Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Baldwin Estate 5103 privacy lever with 5048 rose covers the same function in a decorative lever.
