Schlage ND73 Grade 1 Corridor, Cylindrical Lock, Rhodes Lever, FSIC (Schlage Full Sized IC), Less Core, 2-3/4" Backset

Schlage Lock Company ND Series

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified ND series locks. These locks are put through extreme levels of testing and are proven to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque-more than 2-1/2 times the grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock’s superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles. All ND series locks including electronic functions, ligature-resistant trims, and ground-breaking, high-visibility status indication trims use the common cylindrical ANSI 161L door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications where grade 1 strength and security are desired.

Features:

  • No access with minimum 3,100 in-lbs of lever torque (2.6x BHMA, for general abuse)
  • No access with minimum 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull (8x BHMA, for pry-bar attacks)
  • No access with minimum 100 vertical impacts (20x BHMA, for sledgehammer attacks)
  • Near-zero droop and wobble beyond 16 million cycles (after 16x BHMA) – without the use of set screws or O-rings

Schlage ND73-JD-RHO-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage ND78 classroom security lock work during a lockdown?
The ND78 is a double cylinder classroom security lock with 180-degree lockdown, ANSI F110. There's a key cylinder in both levers. Rotating the key 180 degrees counterclockwise in either lever and returning it to start makes the outside lever inoperative; 180 degrees clockwise unlocks it again. That means a teacher can lock the corridor side from inside the room without opening the door. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
2) What cylinders and keyways can I get in a Schlage ND lock, and can it match my existing key system?
Standard is a 6-pin conventional cylinder in the patented Everest 29 S123 keyway with two keys. FSIC, SFIC and 7-pin SL formats are available, along with less-cylinder versions prepped to accept non-Schlage cylinders from Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Sargent and Yale, so the lock can be brought into a key system you already run. Open, restricted, Primus, master keying and construction keying are all offered. Note the ND78 takes a cylinder in both levers.
3) Which Schlage ND function should I pick for a classroom, ND70 or ND78?
ND70 (ANSI F84) is the traditional classroom lock: a cylinder outside only, so the teacher has to step into the corridor to lock the door. ND78 (F110) is the classroom security version with a cylinder in both levers and a 180-degree lockdown, so the door is secured from inside the room. If you want the outside lever to spin freely rather than stay rigid when locked, the Vandlgard equivalents are ND94 for the classroom function and ND98 for classroom security.
4) Can I run a double cylinder ND lock on an exit door?
Be careful here. Schlage flags double cylinder locks on any door used for egress as a life safety hazard and does not recommend them, with installation only where existing codes allow. The ND78 classroom security function is the exception in that group: the inside lever stays free for immediate egress at all times, which is why it is the one specified for occupied classrooms. Functions like ND66 store, ND82 institution and ND70 x 80 keep both levers fixed and carry that caution.
5) What is the closest equivalent to the Schlage ND78 classroom security lock from another manufacturer?
The Dexter C1000 Series classroom security cylindrical lever lock is the nearest match. Both are Grade 1 cylindrical lever locks with a classroom security function. The Dexter C1000 classroom security model uses a clutching keyed lever and lists a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. The Schlage ND78 is a double cylinder classroom security lock with a 180-degree lockdown, meaning the key rotates 180 degrees in either lever to lock or unlock the outside lever, and it is non-handed.
6) If the opening only needs to be locked from the outside with a key, what should be used instead of a classroom security lock?
A standard classroom function lock is the simpler choice when lockdown from inside the room is not required. The Dexter C1000 Series classroom cylindrical lever lock is a Grade 1 keyed classroom function with a clutching lever and a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range, and the Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway, keyed different, on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Schlage ND78 differs in that it carries cylinders in both levers so a teacher can lock the corridor side without stepping into the hallway.
7) Is a storeroom lever lock a valid substitute for the Schlage ND78 on a classroom door?
It is not an equivalent. A storeroom lock such as the Cal-Royal AG05, a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt on a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door, or the Hager 2580 Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with Withnell lever, keeps the outside lever fixed at all times and the key only retracts the latch. The Schlage ND78 is a classroom security function with 180-degree lockdown, where the outside lever is normally free and is locked or unlocked by key from either side. If the room needs to be left unlocked during class and secured quickly, the storeroom function will not do it.
8) Is the ND78 handed, or can one lock go on any classroom door?
Non-handed. The ND series cylindrical lock installs on left or right hand doors without reversing anything, so a school or facility can stock a single part number across every classroom opening.
9) What Grade 1 lever lock matches the Schlage ND78 for the non-keyed doors on the same corridor?
For passage openings finished to the same Grade 1 level, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers, a 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch door thickness range and a fire rating; the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, also fire rated; and the Design Hardware X75 is a Grade 1 passage lever lockset with a flat lever for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage ND78 itself is the keyed double cylinder classroom security member of the heavy duty ND Series.
10) What should go on a door where both levers must stay locked at all times, rather than a Schlage ND78?
That is an asylum or institution function. The Dexter C1000 Series asylum lock is a Grade 1 cylindrical lock in the F87 function for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. The Schlage ND78 leaves the inside lever free for immediate egress and is the F110 classroom security function, so it is the wrong choice where both sides must remain fixed.
11) Are Grade 2 entrance levers like the Hager 2525 or Falcon B511CP6D an alternative to the Schlage ND78?
They serve a different opening. The Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty entry/office lever. Entrance and office functions lock by pushbutton on the inside and the key outside does not lock, so there is no keyed lockdown. The Schlage ND78 is a Grade 1 heavy duty double cylinder lock whose key locks the outside lever from either side.
12) Can Yale or Accentra lever hardware be keyed into the same Schlage system as the ND78?
The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which is how Yale-brand trim is brought onto a Schlage cylinder. On the Schlage side, the ND78 is offered less cylinders so the cylinder format is chosen to suit the existing key system. Several Cal-Royal levers, such as the AG00 entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway on a 2-3/8 inch backset, are furnished in the Schlage C keyway directly.
13) For an electrified opening tied to access control, what takes the place of the Schlage ND78?
The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock at 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, offered with an NZ lever and D rose. The Schlage ND78 is a mechanical lock with no electrified function, so an opening that must release on a card reader or fire alarm signal needs the electrified lock rather than the key-operated classroom security function.
14) Will a Grade 3 residential lever such as a Kwikset or Callan hold up on a school corridor door?
Those are built for lighter service. The Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever and 300BRNL Breton privacy lever are Grade 3 for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Callan Artino entrance leverset and Asheville passage leverset are Grade 3 as well. The Schlage ND78 is Grade 1 heavy duty commercial with a zinc and steel body, which is the level typically specified for classroom and corridor traffic.
15) Why do some ND78 locks come with a different rose?
Locks ordered in 626 satin chrome come with the instruction rose, part 47342586, which marks the key rotation direction for a rapid lockdown. Other finishes get the standard rose, 3.44 inch diameter. The ND series is offered in ten finishes total, from bright brass 605 through matte black 622, oil rubbed bronze 613, aged bronze 643e and the antimicrobial 626AM.
16) What matching dummy trim pairs with a Grade 1 lever lock like the Schlage ND78 on an inactive leaf?
The BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim is a Grade 1 non-keyed heavy duty cylindrical lever dummy, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever. For a lighter opening the BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim is Grade 2 medium duty. The Schlage ND78 itself is the keyed working half, a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock.
17) Is there a keyless option instead of the Schlage ND78 for a room that needs controlled access without issuing keys?
Yes. The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination in passage function for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Emtek Classic keypad leverset is a coded lever option. The Schlage ND78 is a mechanical, non-electronic Grade 1 lock operated by key in either lever.
