Schlage ND78 Grade 1 Double Cylinder Classroom Security, Cylindrical Lock, Rhodes Lever, Less Cylinders, 2-3/4" Backset

Schlage Lock Company ND Series

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified ND series locks. These locks are put through extreme levels of testing and are proven to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque-more than 2-1/2 times the grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock’s superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles. All ND series locks including electronic functions, ligature-resistant trims, and ground-breaking, high-visibility status indication trims use the common cylindrical ANSI 161L door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications where grade 1 strength and security are desired.

Features:

  • No access with minimum 3,100 in-lbs of lever torque (2.6x BHMA, for general abuse)
  • No access with minimum 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull (8x BHMA, for pry-bar attacks)
  • No access with minimum 100 vertical impacts (20x BHMA, for sledgehammer attacks)
  • Near-zero droop and wobble beyond 16 million cycles (after 16x BHMA) – without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Latch retraction with up to 200 pound preload (4x BHMA) for confident operation in warped and preloaded doors

Schlage ND78-CD-RHO-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage ND78 classroom security lock actually lock down a classroom door?
The ND78 has a key cylinder in both levers. A teacher inside rotates the key 180 degrees counterclockwise and returns it to the start position, which makes the outside lever inoperative, so nobody can enter without a key. Rotating the key 180 degrees clockwise the same way unlocks it again. The inside lever always retracts the latch for immediate egress, so the room can be locked without anyone stepping into the corridor. It is the ANSI F110 classroom security function.
2) Does the ND78 ship with cylinders, or do I have to order them separately?
This ND78 is the less-cylinder version, so the two cylinders are not included and must be supplied or ordered separately. The chassis accepts Schlage conventional 6-pin, FSIC, SFIC and 7-pin SL formats, and the less-cylinder build is also made to fit non-Schlage cylinders from Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Sargent and Yale, which is how facilities keep the lock on an existing master key system.
3) Do I need to order the ND78 handed, and will it work on either door swing?
No handing to specify. The ND78 is non-handed, so the same lock works on a left or right hand door and you do not need to know the swing before you order.
4) Is the ND78 a double cylinder lock, and is that a life safety problem on an egress door?
It is a double cylinder lock, keyed in both levers, but unlike the other double cylinder ND functions it keeps the inside lever always free for immediate egress. That is the difference between the ND78 and functions like the ND66 store lock, ND82 institution lock or ND70 x 80, where both levers can be fixed and Schlage warns against use on egress doors. If you need free egress from inside, the ND78 is the double cylinder function that provides it.
5) Can I swap an existing ND series lock on the door for an ND78 without redoing the prep?
Yes. Every ND series lock, mechanical, electrified, ligature-resistant trim and indicator trim, uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161L door preparation, so they are interchangeable in the same opening. Changing a corridor ND73 or storeroom ND80 over to an ND78 for classroom lockdown is a chassis and trim swap, not a new door prep. Confirm the backset matches, since the standard latch here is 2-3/4 inch.
6) What is the closest equivalent to the Schlage ND78 classroom security lock from another manufacturer?
The Dexter C1000 Series classroom security cylindrical lever lock is the nearest match. Like the ND78, it is a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever lock built for the classroom security function, where the lock is secured by key without opening the door. The Dexter C1000 classroom security lock lists a door thickness range of 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch and uses a clutching lever, while the ND78 is a non-handed Grade 1 cylindrical lock carrying ANSI/BHMA F110.
7) Is a double-keyed institution lock the same thing as the ND78 classroom security lock?
No. The ND78 keeps the inside lever always free for egress and uses the key only to lock or unlock the outside lever. An institution or asylum function keeps both levers fixed at all times so a key is required from either side to get in or out. The Dexter C1000 Series asylum lock is the Grade 1 version of that function, carrying ANSI F87 with a 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch door thickness range, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 asylum cylindrical lock with a ball knob and Schlage C keyway. Those are appropriate only where code permits keyed egress.
8) What is the difference between the Schlage ND70 classroom lock and the ND78 classroom security lock?
The ND70 (ANSI F84) is keyed on the outside only, so the door can only be locked from the corridor side with a key. The ND78 (ANSI F110) has cylinders in both levers, so staff can lock the outside lever from inside the room with a 180-degree key turn. If your goal is lockdown from inside the classroom, the ND78 is the function you want. If you also want the outside lever to spin freely when locked to survive abuse, the ND98 is the Vandlgard version of the same F110 function.
9) Does the ND78 come with the lockdown instruction rose?
In 626 finish, yes. ND78 locks ordered in 626 satin chrome come standard with the instruction rose, part 47342586, which shows the key rotation direction for rapid lockdown. Other finishes get a standard rose instead. For a school where staff need to act fast under stress, that rose is a reason to specify 626.
10) Is the ND78 electrified, and what if I need an access controlled version?
No, the ND78 is a mechanical lock with no electronics. If the opening needs power, the ND series includes six wired functions with autodetecting 12-24V DC input, switch-selectable EL/EU fail safe or fail secure operation set on the chassis, modular request to exit rated 3A at 125VAC or 2A at 30VDC, and 0.23 amp maximum with 0.01 amp holding current. Those electrified versions exceed BHMA A156.25 for indoor electrified locks and use the same 161L prep.
11) Can I get the ND78 keyed into our existing master key system?
Yes. Schlage ND locks support open, patented, restricted, geographic exclusive and UL437 key systems, plus Primus, master keying and construction keying. The standard Schlage cylinder is a 6-pin patented Everest 29 S123 keyway. Because this is the less-cylinder build, you can also install cylinders from Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Sargent or Yale to stay on a system you already run.
12) We need a storeroom door, not a classroom lockdown. What is the alternative to the ND78?
The ND78 locks and unlocks the outside lever with a 180 degree key rotation from either side and is not the right function for a door that should simply stay locked outside at all times. For that, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt and a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever covering 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors.
13) What Grade 1 lever lock should I put on the non-keyed doors in the same corridor as the ND78?
To keep the same Grade 1 heavy duty level on doors that do not need a cylinder, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 non-handed passage cylindrical lock, fire rated, with a 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch door thickness range, and the Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever with pressure release technology. The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. The ND78 itself is the keyed Grade 1 classroom security lock in the run.
14) Can an electrified lever lock do what the ND78 does for classroom lockdown?
They solve lockdown differently. The ND78 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock that is secured by turning a key 180 degrees in either lever. An electrified option such as the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe cylindrical lever lock operating on 12V AC/DC for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, which means lockdown is commanded from an access control system rather than by key at the door.
15) Is a keypad leverset a substitute for the ND78 on a classroom door?
Not for the same job. The ND78 is a mechanical double cylinder lock rated Grade 1, with key cylinders in both levers for lockdown from inside or outside. Keypad products such as the Delaney LP250 electronic keypad leverlock, Grade 2, or the Lockey 1150 heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors control entry by code rather than by key, and do not provide the two-sided keyed lockdown.
16) I need a matching dummy or passage lever for the inactive leaf next to my classroom security door. What are my options?
Within the ND series, ND170 is a single dummy trim (fixed lever one side, no latch or chassis) and ND172 is a double dummy with fixed levers both sides; latch cover plates for the dummy are part 47269199. For passage on an adjacent door, ND10 is the ANSI F75 passage latch. If you are matching in a different brand, the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim and the Accentra 455LN Augusta are Grade 1 dummy levers, and the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 passage lever for 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch doors.
17) What matching dummy trim goes with a Grade 1 lever lock like the ND78 on an inactive leaf?
The ND78 is a keyed cylindrical lever lock, so an inactive leaf needs separate dummy trim. Grade 1 options include the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim cylindrical lever lock, heavy duty and non-keyed, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta heavy duty Grade 1 single dummy. A Grade 2 alternative is the BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim, which is medium duty.
18) For an office or entrance door that does not need classroom security, what is a lighter-duty lever than the ND78?
The ND78 is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial lock. Where a lower grade suits the traffic, the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever with entry/office function, the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors.
