Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX80P BRK 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does a storeroom function lock actually behave day to day?
Outside lever stays locked and rigid at all times. A key in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt to let you in, and the inside lever always turns freely so anyone inside can get out without a key. There is no way to leave the outside lever unlocked by accident, which is why storeroom is the standard choice for supply rooms, mechanical rooms, and IT closets. It carries the ANSI F86 function designation.
2) Do I have to order a left hand or right hand Schlage ALX80?
No handing to specify. The ALX80 is non-handed, so one part number works on a left hand or right hand door and you can stock a single lock for a whole building. That is one less thing to get wrong on a replacement order when nobody is standing at the door.
3) Can I put the Schlage ALX80 on my building's existing master key system?
Yes, and the cylinder choice is how you do it. Order P for a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway if you key it here, or B for small format interchangeable core less core, J for full size interchangeable core less core, and L less conventional cylinder if you are supplying the core from your own system. Keying is specified at order as keyed different or keyed alike, and a key code field is available for existing systems. Keyed locks ship with 2 keys.
4) If I order the Schlage ALX80 less core, what do I still have to buy to make it work?
Less core means the lock arrives without the cylinder core, so you supply it. B takes a small format interchangeable core and J takes a full size interchangeable core, both in your existing keyway; L arrives less a conventional cylinder. The lock body, Boardwalk lever, latch, and strike are all there, only the core is missing. If you do not run your own core program, order the P option with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder already installed.
5) Is the Schlage ALX80 approved for a fire rated door?
UL and cUL listed for A label fire doors: 3 hour on a 4 x 8 foot or 4 x 10 foot single door and an 8 x 8 foot pair, and 90 minutes on an 8 x 10 foot pair when specified with the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option. It is tested and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, and meets ADA requirements. It also complies with Florida Building Code and Miami Dade hurricane requirements.
6) I want a keyed lever but tenants need to lock and unlock it from inside. Is the storeroom function right?
No. On the ALX80 the outside lever is permanently locked and only a key retracts the latch, so nobody can leave the door in an unlocked state. If you want the outside lever unlockable from the inside, you want an entrance or office function instead: the ALX50 (ANSI F82) or ALX53 (F109) in the same series, or from another brand the Hager 2525 Grade 2 entry lock for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, or the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway. For a classroom where a teacher locks the outside lever with a key, that is the ALX70 (F84).
7) What is the closest Grade 2 storeroom lever lock to the Schlage ALX80 Boardwalk?
The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt, and the Hager 2580 with the Withnell lever is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock rated for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Both match the ALX80 on the two specs that decide a storeroom opening: Grade 2 and storeroom function, where the outside lever stays locked and the latchbolt retracts by key outside or by the inside lever. The ALX80 itself is non-handed and comes with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch as standard.
8) The Schlage ALX80 is Grade 2 - what Grade 1 cylindrical lever locks are there if the spec calls for heavy duty?
The ALX80 is certified Grade 2 and rated heavy duty. Where the drawing calls for Grade 1, the Dexter C1000 series covers keyed cylindrical lever functions including classroom, classroom security, and entry/office, on 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the asylum version covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-handed cylindrical lock for 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors with a fire rating, though it is passage function rather than keyed.
9) What should I use instead of the Schlage ALX80 if staff need to leave the door unlocked during the day?
The ALX80 keeps the outside lever fixed at all times, with the latchbolt retracted only by key outside or by the inside lever, so it cannot be left in a passage state. For an opening that toggles, an entrance/office function is the one to specify: the Falcon B511CP6D is Grade 2 entry/office medium duty, the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial entry lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different with a 2-3/8 inch backset.
10) Is a classroom lever the same thing as the Schlage ALX80 storeroom?
No. On the ALX80 the outside lever is always locked and only a key or the inside lever retracts the latch, so there is no way to leave it unlocked from outside. A classroom lock is keyed on the outside as well but is meant to be left locked or unlocked by key. If that is the behavior you want, the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is Grade 2 with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the ALX80 standard backset, and the Dexter C1000 classroom is a Grade 1 clutching keyed lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors.
11) I need a lock that keys into an existing Schlage C keyway system - which locks besides the Schlage ALX80 take it?
The ALX80 is offered with a P conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as well as B SFIC and J FSIC less-core and L less conventional cylinder builds. Among other brands, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever and AG03 classroom lever are both 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock uses a conventional cylinder in Schlage C keyway. The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware if the existing openings are Yale.
12) What is Vandlgard on the Schlage ALX, and do I need it on a storeroom door?
Vandlgard lets the locked outside lever rotate freely without transmitting force into the chassis, so someone hanging on or kicking the lever does not break the lock. On the ALX80 it is field selectable and field reversible back to standard locked lever engagement, so you decide at the door rather than at the order. Worth turning on for corridors, stairwells, dorms, and anywhere the public can reach the lever; on a back of house storeroom it matters less.
13) Will the Schlage ALX80 accept cylinders from another brand's key system?
The ALX chassis accepts all Schlage cylinder formats plus five competitive formats, so a facility standardized on a non-Schlage keyway can often keep its system rather than rekey the building. Used with Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders it becomes a high security opening. That flexibility is the practical reason to pick ALX over a chassis locked to one keyway.
14) I need storeroom locks on some doors and classroom or office locks on others. Do I have to buy different chassis?
One ALX chassis fits all functions and cores. The patent pending chassis allows in-field function setup, so a stocked chassis plus a function and lever kit becomes an ALX80 storeroom, an ALX70 classroom (F84), an ALX50 entrance/office (F82), an ALX53 entrance (F109), or a non-keyed ALX10 passage (F75), ALX40 privacy (F76), ALX44 hospital privacy, or ALX170/ALX172 dummy trim. For a facility repurposing rooms, that is one chassis on the shelf instead of eight.
15) Is a Grade 2 lock like the Schlage ALX80 enough for a high traffic commercial door, or should I step up to Grade 1?
Grade 2 to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000, rated heavy duty, with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs, and the deep-drawn spindle with 5 points of lever engagement is what stops the lever drooping over time. For most storerooms, offices, and multi-family common doors that is the right level. For a main entrance or an abused institutional opening where a specifier calls out Grade 1, the Schlage ND Series is the Grade 1 cylindrical family, and ALX suites with ND so the levers and finishes match across a building.
16) What other Grade 2 storeroom lever locks could I use instead of the Schlage ALX80?
Two direct peers in the same class: the Cal-Royal AG05, a Grade 2 storeroom leverset with a deadlocking latchbolt, listed for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2580 Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever, listed for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors. The Hager covers thicker doors up to 2 inches. Where the ALX80 separates itself is the cylinder side: interchangeable core options and acceptance of competitive cylinder formats, which matters if you are tying the door into an existing key system.
17) My door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches. What cylindrical lever lock should I use instead of the Schlage ALX80?
The ALX chassis is set up for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, so a 2 inch door is out of range. For thicker leaves, the Falcon K101 Grade 1 cylindrical lock is listed for 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series covers 1-3/4 to 2 inches. Those are passage function, so if you need keyed storeroom on a thick door, work within those heavy duty families rather than forcing the ALX.
18) Does the Schlage ALX80 lever meet California accessibility rules on lever return?
ADA requirements are met, and under the California Referenced Standards Code all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less comply. The Boardwalk is one of ten ALX lever designs, so if a particular design does not meet the return dimension on your job, another design in the same series will while keeping the same chassis and finish.
19) Is the Schlage ALX80 an electronic or access control lock?
Purely mechanical. The ALX80 is a keyed cylindrical lock with no electrification, no wiring, and no power requirement, so nothing changes at the door if the building loses power. If you need an electrified cylindrical lever, the ALX does not offer it, but the Schlage ND Series it suites with adds electrified options, and from another brand the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a 12V AC/DC fail safe electrified cylindrical lever. For a standalone keypad instead of a key, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock.
20) The door does not need to lock - what is the simpler alternative to a Schlage ALX80?
The ALX80 is a keyed single-cylinder lock, so a non-locking opening does not need it. In Grade 2 passage, the Falcon B101 is non-handed medium duty, the Hager 2510 with the Withnell design covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Accentra 5301LN Augusta and 4601LN are cylindrical lever passage locks. The Arrow GL01 with the Sierra lever is Grade 2 passage for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors.
21) Is a dummy lever a substitute for the Schlage ALX80 on an inactive leaf?
It is not a lock, and that is the point of the difference. The ALX80 is a keyed cylindrical lock with a deadlatch and strike; a dummy trim has no latch and no chassis, so it only gives you a matching pull on a leaf that does not operate. The BEST 9K series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever trim and the BEST 7KC series 1DT is the Grade 2 medium duty equivalent; the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 single dummy and the Callan Bentley is a Grade 2 dummy lever. Use one of these only on the inactive leaf, never where the opening has to latch.
22) The Schlage ALX80 needs a key at the door - what keyless options cover the same storeroom opening?
The ALX80 is a mechanical lock with no electronic option, keyed with two keys supplied. Where you want to skip key distribution, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock and the Emtek Classic keypad leverset is a keypad unit. The Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination, passage function, for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors - no wiring and no batteries, but confirm the function suits the opening before swapping it in for a storeroom lock.
23) The opening needs a bathroom or bedroom lock, not a Schlage ALX80 - what changes?
The ALX80 is keyed with a cylinder outside, which is not what a washroom or bedroom door wants. A privacy function locks from inside with no key outside: the Hager 2540 with the Withnell lever is Grade 2 for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, the Arrow MK02-TA is a non-keyed privacy lock with a Tudor knob and a fire rating for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 privacy lever set for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors.
24) What is the difference between the Schlage ALX80 and a Grade 3 residential lever?
The ALX80 is a commercial Grade 2 lock with a heavy duty rating, a zinc and steel body and a deadlatch. Grade 3 levers sit at a lighter service level: the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Callan Artino and Bennett are Grade 3 entrance leversets, and the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 passage set. Those suit apartment interiors and light traffic; the ALX80 is built for the openings that get cycled all day.
25) The Schlage ALX80 has a Vandlgard option - what other vandal resistant cylindrical levers are there?
The ALX80 carries a field selectable Vandlgard feature that is reversible in the field to non-Vandlgard locked lever engagement, so a lever forced when locked does not transmit the load into the chassis. The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors with a fire rating, though it is passage/closet function rather than keyed storeroom. The Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever using pressure release technology.
26) Does an exit device lever trim replace a Schlage ALX80?
No, and mixing them up is a common ordering error. The ALX80 is a complete cylindrical lock with its own chassis, deadlatch and strike. The Corbin Russwin 585F715 is a Grade 1 lock lever for the ED8000 pushpad exit device, and the Imperial USA ED-EL500HD is a heavy duty escutcheon lever trim in entry function - both are trim that mounts to a device or prep already on the door, not a standalone lock. Order those only when the exit device is already there.
27) What lock takes the place of a Schlage ALX80 on a utility or patient room door?
The ALX80 is F86 storeroom, with the outside lever fixed and no way to hold it unlocked. Asylum function is the adjacent choice where both sides need to be controlled: the Dexter C1000 asylum is Grade 1 F87 for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 heavy duty asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder.
28) What finishes does the Schlage ALX80 Boardwalk lever come in, and is there anything for a healthcare corridor?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. For patient rooms, clinics, and food service, 626AM is the antimicrobial version of the standard 626 satin chrome, so it matches the rest of the building's hardware while giving you the treated surface on the touch points.
29) What is the Schlage ALX80 made of, and will it hold up in a coastal or wet location?
Zinc and steel construction with a stainless steel latchbolt, rated heavy duty. It is a commercial lock, and it is listed as compliant with Florida Building Code and Miami Dade hurricane requirements, which is the certification a coastal specifier asks for. Captured screws in the latch, strike, and inside spring cage mean no loose small parts to drop during service.
