Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX80P LAT 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does a storeroom function lever like the Schlage ALX80 actually behave on the door?
The outside lever is always fixed, so the door is locked at all times from the corridor side and closes locked behind anyone. Only the key retracts the latch from outside. The inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room walks straight out without a key or a thumbturn. That is ANSI F86, and it is the usual choice for mechanical rooms, storage, electrical closets and stairwells where the door must never be left unlocked by accident. If you want people to be able to leave the door unlocked during the day, storeroom is the wrong function, look at the ALX50 entrance/office instead.
2) Can I get the Schlage ALX80 to work with my existing small format interchangeable core keying?
Yes. Cylinder choice is part of the order: B for SFIC less core, J for FSIC less core, L less conventional cylinder, or P for a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. If your facility is already on SFIC, order B and drop in your own cores so the new door falls straight into the existing masterkey system. The ALX chassis accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats, and takes Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders where you need high security.
3) Can I have a set of Schlage ALX80 storeroom locks all keyed alike for one building?
Yes. Keying is a required choice at order: KD keyed different is standard, KA keys a group of locks alike so one key opens every storeroom, or None if you are ordering a less-cylinder version to pin yourself. There is also a key code field if the locks have to match an existing bitting. Factory-cylinder locks come with 2 keys.
4) Is the Schlage ALX80 rated for a fire door?
Yes. ALX locks are UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label fire doors up to 4' x 8' or 4' x 10' single doors and 8' x 8' pairs, and 90-minute on 8' x 10' pairs when specified with the 3/4" Grade 1 latch option. They are also tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, and meet ADA requirements.
5) What is the closest Grade 2 storeroom lever lock to the Schlage ALX80 Latitude?
The Hager 2580 with Withnell lever is the nearest peer: it is a Grade 2 cylindrical storeroom lock, the same function and grade as the ALX80 Latitude, and it covers doors from 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Cal-Royal AG05 is the other close match, a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The ALX80 carries ANSI/BHMA F86 storeroom function with a fixed outside lever that only the key retracts, and takes Schlage conventional 6-pin C keyway, SFIC, or FSIC cylinder prep.
6) I need a storeroom-style lever on a door thicker than 1-3/4 inch. What should I use instead of the Schlage ALX80?
The ALX80 Latitude is built for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. For a thicker door, the Hager 2580 Withnell storeroom lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch and is also a Grade 2 cylindrical storeroom function. If the opening needs Grade 1, the Corbin Russwin CL3300 series lock lever and the CL3110 vandal resistant lever lock are rated for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Falcon K101 K Series goes from 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch.
7) Which lever lock should I order if the room needs to lock behind people but staff still need to unlock it from outside without a key?
That is entrance/office function, not storeroom. The ALX80 Latitude keeps the outside lever permanently fixed, so it is always key-only from the corridor. For a lever that can be left unlocked, the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever with entry/office function, the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with lever handle for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever uses a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different with a 2-3/8 inch backset, which keeps the key system consistent with a Schlage C keyway ALX80.
8) For a classroom door, is the Schlage ALX80 the right function or do I need something else?
A classroom door usually wants classroom function, where a key locks and unlocks the outside lever, rather than the ALX80 storeroom function where the outside lever is permanently fixed and only a key retracts the latch. The Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever uses a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the 2-3/4 inch backset the ALX80 ships with. The Dexter C1000 classroom lever is a Grade 1 clutching keyed lock for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the C1000 classroom security version keys both sides.
9) The room is a utility or patient area that has to be secure from both sides. Does the ALX80 cover that?
No. The ALX80 leaves the inside lever always free for immediate egress, so the room can always be exited without a key. For an opening that must be keyed or controlled from both faces, the Dexter C1000 asylum lock is a Grade 1 F87 cylindrical lock for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 heavy duty asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, which keys with a Schlage C keyway system.
10) Does the Schlage ALX80 need to be ordered handed, left or right?
Non-handed. One ALX80 works on a left or right hand door, so you can stock a single part for a whole building and not sort levers by swing on the truck.
11) What is Vandlgard on the Schlage ALX, and do I have to decide before I order?
Vandlgard lets the locked outside lever rotate freely instead of standing rigid, so someone hanging on the handle or kicking it down does not load the chassis. On the ALX it is field selectable and field reversible, so you can flip between Vandlgard and standard locked-lever engagement after the lock is on the door. Worth having in a school corridor, a dorm or any tenant space that takes abuse.
12) Can I change a Schlage ALX80 storeroom lock to a different function later without buying a new lock?
Yes, and that is the point of the ALX modular design. One chassis fits all functions and cores, and the chassis lets you set the function up in the field. If a storage room becomes an office you can move to entrance/office rather than pulling the hardware. The keyed lineup is ALX50 entrance/office (F82), ALX53 entrance (F109), ALX70 classroom (F84) and ALX80 storeroom (F86); non-keyed covers ALX10 passage (F75), ALX40 privacy (F76), ALX44 hospital privacy and the ALX170 and ALX172 dummy trims.
13) I need a Grade 1 storeroom lever, not Grade 2. What should I use instead of the ALX80?
The ALX80 is a Grade 2 lock, heavy duty but Grade 2. For a Grade 1 cylindrical in a high-traffic opening, Schlage's own ND Series is the Grade 1 line the ALX is built to suite with, sharing the lever designs and adding 15 more functions plus 4 electrified options. Cross-brand, the Dexter C1000 Series is Grade 1 cylindrical, offered in classroom, classroom security, entry/office and asylum functions with a 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" door thickness range on the keyed models. If the opening needs electrified access control, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified lever at 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4" to 2" doors.
14) What other Grade 2 storeroom levers could I use instead of the Schlage ALX80?
Two direct Grade 2 storeroom alternatives: the Hager 2580 with Withnell lever, rated for 1-3/8" to 2" doors, and the Cal-Royal AG05 storeroom lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt, 1-3/8" to 1-3/4". Both are the same function class. The reason to stay with the ALX80 is the key system, it takes SFIC, FSIC, conventional Schlage C and five competitive cylinder formats, so it lands inside an existing Schlage masterkey without rekeying the building.
15) What is the Grade 1 equivalent if my spec calls for a heavier lever lock than the ALX80?
The ALX80 Latitude is certified Grade 2 with a heavy duty rating. Where the drawing calls for Grade 1, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 in the CL3100 series is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever with a fire rating for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, the Falcon T101 T Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lever with pressure release technology, and the Dexter C1000 series covers Grade 1 keyed functions including entry/office and asylum. Note these named Grade 1 examples are passage and non-storeroom functions except the Dexter keyed models, so match function before grade.
16) Can I use a passage lever like the Falcon B101 or Arrow GL01 in place of the Schlage ALX80?
No. The Falcon B101 and the Arrow GL01 are Grade 2 passage function levers, non-keyed, so both levers always retract the latch and the door never locks. The ALX80 is a keyed single-cylinder storeroom lock with a fixed outside lever and two keys supplied. Passage levers suit a corridor or closet door that only needs a latch; use them alongside an ALX80 on the same project, not as a substitute for it.
17) I have Yale or Accentra levers on the rest of the building. Can I keep one key system if I add a Schlage ALX80?
The ALX80 accepts all Schlage cylinder formats plus five competitive formats, and is ordered with a conventional 6-pin C keyway, SFIC less core, or FSIC less core prep. Going the other direction, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which is how existing Yale-branded openings get brought onto a Schlage keyway. Match the keyway across both before pinning.
18) Is a Grade 3 residential lever such as the Cal-Royal AUS00 or Kwikset Breton an acceptable swap for a Schlage ALX80 on a commercial opening?
They are not the same class of hardware. The Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever and the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage and 300BRNL Breton privacy sets are Grade 3, both sized for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The ALX80 Latitude is a commercial Grade 2 heavy duty lock certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, UL/cUL listed for A label fire doors, ADA compliant, and compliant with Florida Building Code and Miami Dade hurricane requirements. On a rated or code-driven opening, the Grade 3 sets will not carry the spec.
19) I want keypad access on a storage room instead of a key. What are the options next to a Schlage ALX80?
The ALX80 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock keyed with a cylinder. Where credentials or a code are preferred, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination in passage function for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Emtek Classic keypad leverset is the residential-styled option. A mechanical keypad like the Lockey needs no wiring or batteries; the Delaney is the electronic one.
20) If the storeroom door needs to release on a fire alarm or tie into access control, what replaces the ALX80?
The ALX80 Latitude is a mechanical storeroom lock with no electrical option. For an electrified cylindrical lever in the same door prep family, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe lever at 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, offered with an NZ lever and D rose. Fail safe means the lever unlocks when power is removed, which is the opposite behavior from the ALX80 fixed outside lever, so confirm which state the life safety plan requires.
21) What finishes does the Schlage ALX80 Latitude lever come in, and is there anything for a healthcare corridor?
Ten finishes across every cylinder option: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. For patient rooms and clinical corridors, 626AM is the antimicrobial version of the standard 626 satin chrome, so it matches the rest of a 626 building visually.
22) Is the Schlage ALX80 tough enough for a high-traffic storeroom door, and what is the latch made of?
Heavy duty Grade 2, built with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs, on a zinc and steel body. The spindle is deep drawn with 5 points of lever engagement, which is what stops the lever drooping or wobbling after a few years of people leaning on it. Captured screws in the latch, strike and inside spring cage mean no loose small parts during service calls.
23) Do I have to order the Schlage ALX80 fully configured, or can I buy the pieces?
Both routes are open. It can come factory configured and ready to install, ordered less levers, or as separate chassis, function and lever kits assembled on site. For a locksmith carrying truck stock, or a distributor who wants to build an uncommon lever and finish combination same day, the kit route means one chassis covers every function instead of stocking a lock per function.
24) What do I order for the storage rooms that only need a dummy or trim lever to match a Schlage ALX80 opening?
A dummy trim has no latch and no chassis, so it is a surface pull only. The BEST 7KC series single dummy trim is a Grade 2 non-keyed lever, medium duty, and the BEST 9K series 1DT is the Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy. The Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 single dummy cylindrical lever in the 5400 series, and the Callan Bentley BN5051 is a Grade 2 dummy lever. Order these for inactive leaves only; the door that actually secures the stock still takes the keyed ALX80.
25) The architect wants a decorative lever on the office side but a storeroom lock on the stock room. What pairs with a Schlage ALX80?
The ALX80 uses the Latitude lever on a commercial cylindrical chassis, non-handed, in ten finishes including 626 satin chrome, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 622 matte black and 643E aged bronze. For the decorative side of the same project, the Baldwin Estate 5103 lever on the 5048 rose comes in passage and privacy, plus left and right hand half dummy, and Deltana offers entry levers such as the 6201 Manchester, 6411 Morant and 6431 Linstead for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. The Baldwin half dummies are handed, so specify left or right; the ALX80 is non-handed.
