Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX80P BRW 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ALX80 storeroom function actually do at the door?
The outside lever stays locked at all times and never unlocks by button. A key in the outside lever retracts the deadlatch to get in, and the inside lever is always free so anyone inside can walk out without a key. That is ANSI F86 storeroom function. It suits mechanical rooms, IT closets, and supply rooms where the door must never be left unlocked by accident.
2) Do I have to order the ALX80 handed for a left hand or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The ALX80 Broadway lever lock is non-handed, so one part works on a left or right hand opening and you do not need to know the swing before you order. That is what makes it workable as truck stock or as a standardized part across a portfolio of doors.
3) Which cylinder option should I pick on the Schlage ALX80, and does it come keyed?
Four cylinder choices. P gives you a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, ready to go with two keys. B is small format interchangeable core less core, J is full size interchangeable core less core, and L is less conventional cylinder. Pick B, J, or L only if you are supplying your own core from an existing key system. If you take the P cylinder you also choose keyed different (standard) or keyed alike, and you can supply a key code on the order.
4) Can I key a batch of Schlage ALX80 storeroom locks alike so one key opens every storage room?
Yes. Keyed alike is a selectable option at order, and you can pass a key code with it if you are matching an existing system. Keyed different is the standard. If the building runs on interchangeable cores, order the B (small format) or J (full size) less core version and drop your own cores in instead, which keeps the locks inside the master key system you already have.
5) Is the Schlage ALX80 rated for a fire door?
Yes, the ALX Series is UL/cUL listed. All locks carry a 3-hour A label rating on a 4 x 8 foot or 4 x 10 foot single door and on 8 x 8 foot pair doors, plus 90-minute on 8 x 10 foot pair doors when specified with the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option. It is also tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, and meets ADA requirements.
6) I have Schlage ND Series Grade 1 locks on my main doors. Will the ALX80 match them?
It is built to. Schlage ALX Series suites with ND Series Grade 1 locks, and the lever designs are matched to the ND family, so back-of-house storerooms on ALX visually line up with the ND openings on main corridors. That lets you spend Grade 1 money where the traffic is and Grade 2 where it is not, without the hardware looking mismatched.
7) Can I use my existing non-Schlage cylinders in a Schlage ALX lock?
Yes. The ALX chassis accepts all Schlage cylinder formats plus five competitive cylinder formats, so a facility standardized on another manufacturer's keyway can usually keep its key system and still put ALX locks on the doors. If you want high security, the chassis takes Primus XP cylinders, which are UL 437 listed.
8) What other Grade 2 storeroom lever locks could I use instead of the Schlage ALX80?
Two direct Grade 2 storeroom alternatives worth knowing: the Hager 2580 with Withnell lever, rated for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AG05 with a deadlocking latchbolt, rated for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Hager takes the thicker door if you are working on 2 inch leaves, which the ALX80 does not cover. Where the ALX80 pulls ahead is the key system: it accepts Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats and suites with ND Series Grade 1 locks.
9) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage ALX80 Broadway storeroom lever from another manufacturer?
The Schlage ALX80 is a Grade 2 cylindrical storeroom lever. Two close peers carry the same grade and storeroom function: the Cal-Royal AG05, a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt, and the Hager 2580 Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever. Both hold the storeroom function, so the outside lever stays locked and the key retracts the latch. The Cal-Royal AG05 and the Hager 2580 both list a 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch door thickness range; the ALX80 accommodates 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. Lever appearance differs: Broadway on the Schlage, Withnell on the Hager.
10) Is a passage lever an acceptable substitute for a storeroom lever?
No. A passage lever has no cylinder and no locking at all - both levers always retract the latch. The Schlage ALX80 is a keyed single-cylinder storeroom lock supplied with 2 keys, with the outside lever fixed and openable only by key. Passage products in the same Grade 2 cylindrical class - the Falcon B101 Grade 2 passage lever, the Hager 2510 Grade 2 passage lever with the Withnell design, and the Accentra 5301LN Augusta Grade 2 passage/closet lever - look similar on the door and mount in the same style of bored prep, but none of them secures the opening. Use those on closets and corridor doors that never lock.
11) Which lever locks work with an existing Schlage C keyway master key system?
The Schlage ALX80 is available with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, as well as small format and full size interchangeable core versions supplied less core, and accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats. Two Cal-Royal levers are also built around the Schlage C keyway: the AG00 entrance lever, Grade 2, 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, 2-3/8 inch backset, and the AG03 classroom lever, Grade 2, 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, 2-3/4 inch backset. The Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock is a Grade 2 knob with a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. All can key into a C keyway system, so the choice comes down to function and trim.
12) What is needed for a storeroom door that must release on a fire alarm or from a central control?
The Schlage ALX80 is a mechanical lock with no electronic option - the outside lever is released only by key. For an opening that must unlock on signal, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever operating on 12VAC/DC, listing 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch door thickness, and is also configured with the NZ lever and D rose. Fail safe means the outside lever unlocks when power drops, which is the opposite behavior to the always-locked outside lever of the ALX80.
13) What is Vandlgard on the Schlage ALX Series and can I turn it off?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely when locked instead of staying rigid, so someone hanging on the lever or forcing it down does not transfer the load into the chassis. It is field selectable and field reversible between Vandlgard and non-Vandlgard locked lever engagement, so you decide at install rather than at order. Worth having in dorms, schools, and public corridors where lever abuse is what kills locks.
14) Does the Schlage ALX80 meet Florida Building Code and Miami-Dade hurricane requirements?
The ALX Series is listed as compliant with Florida Building Code and Miami-Dade hurricane requirements. It also meets the California Referenced Standards Code for all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less. That matters for coastal institutional and multi-family work where the hardware schedule has to clear the local approval before anything gets installed.
15) I need a passage or privacy lever that matches these storeroom locks. What else is in the ALX line?
The ALX Series runs ALX10 passage (ANSI F75), ALX40 privacy (F76), ALX44 hospital privacy, ALX170 single dummy and ALX172 double dummy on the non-keyed side. Keyed functions are ALX50 entrance/office (F82), ALX53 entrance (F109), ALX70 classroom (F84), and the ALX80 storeroom (F86). Same chassis, same lever designs, so a whole corridor can be specified out of one family in one finish.
16) Can I change an ALX80 storeroom lock to a different function later without buying a new lock?
Yes, that is the point of the ALX modular design. One chassis fits all functions and all cores, and the chassis allows quick in-field function setup, so a room being repurposed can have its lock function changed rather than replaced. You can buy factory configured, less levers, or as component kits of chassis, function, and lever for on-site assembly. For a facility with a storage room that becomes an office, this is the difference between a parts change and a hardware order.
17) What finishes does the Schlage ALX80 Broadway lever come in, and is there an antimicrobial option?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. The 626AM antimicrobial finish is the one healthcare and food service facilities usually specify for high-touch levers, and it is offered across every cylinder option.
18) Is a Grade 2 lock enough for a storeroom, or should I be buying Grade 1?
Grade 2 is where the ALX80 is certified, tested under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, and it is rated heavy duty with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs in the chassis. For storerooms, closets, and back-of-house doors that see moderate traffic, that is the normal spec. Where a door takes constant public cycling, Grade 1 cylindrical options exist such as the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series vandal resistant chassis or the Falcon T Series, though those are different families and will not key or trim-match an ALX installation.
19) I want a keypad or electronic lock on my storeroom instead of a key. Does the ALX80 do that?
No. The ALX80 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock, keyed only, single cylinder. If you want code entry on a storeroom door, the Lockey 1150 is a mechanical keypad lever set covering 1-1/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock. Neither will key into a Schlage master system the way the ALX80 will.
20) What comes in the box with a Schlage ALX80, and what do I have to order separately?
A configured ALX80 comes with the lock, the deadlatch, the strike, and two keys if you take the conventional P cylinder. Latch and strike are both required selections on the order, so you are choosing backset and face style rather than getting whatever ships. If you order the B, J, or L cylinder options you are getting the lock less core or less cylinder and you supply the core yourself. Captured screws in the latch, strike, and inside spring cage mean no loose small parts on the install.
21) If a storeroom lock is more than the door needs, what keyed lever should be used instead?
The Schlage ALX80 keeps the outside lever locked at all times and opens only by key, which suits a door that must never be left unsecured. Where occupants should be able to unlock the door and leave it unlocked, an entrance/office function is the better fit: the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever with entrance/office function, and the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is Grade 2 with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and 2-3/8 inch backset. For a classroom door where the key locks and unlocks the outside lever from the corridor, the Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and 2-3/4 inch backset.
22) What is the Grade 1 alternative if a spec calls for heavy duty on a keyed lever?
The Schlage ALX80 is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000, Grade 2. Where the drawing calls out Grade 1 on a keyed cylindrical lever, the Dexter C1000 Series covers several functions at Grade 1: the C1000 entry/office and the C1000 classroom are both Grade 1 clutching keyed levers listing 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness, and the C1000 asylum (F87) is Grade 1 with a 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch range. Note that none of those three is the storeroom function the ALX80 performs, so match the function to the opening before substituting on grade alone.
23) What goes on the inactive leaf or a pull-only door next to a storeroom lock?
A dummy trim has no latch and no chassis - it is a lever fixed to the door face as a pull, used on inactive leaves and closet doors that are held shut another way. Matched in grade to a Grade 2 opening, the BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim cylindrical lever is Grade 2 medium duty and the Callan Bentley is a Grade 2 dummy lever; at Grade 1 there is the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim, heavy duty, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta Grade 1 single dummy. None of these secures anything - the Schlage ALX80 remains the keyed storeroom lock for the active leaf.
24) What should be used instead of a keyed storeroom lever when nobody wants to carry a key?
The Schlage ALX80 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock opened by key from the outside. Where credentials replace keys, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination listing a 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch door thickness range, and the Emtek Classic keypad leverset is a further keypad option. The Lockey 1150 is passage function, so it does not hold an opening secure the way a storeroom lock does.
25) What keyed lever suits a door that takes abuse from being forced or hung on?
The Schlage ALX80 has a field selectable Vandlgard feature - the outside lever rotates freely when locked instead of transmitting force into the chassis - and it is field reversible between Vandlgard and non-Vandlgard locked lever engagement. On the non-keyed side, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 passage/closet is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever, fire rated, listing 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch door thickness, and the Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever using pressure release technology. Both of those are passage function, so they abuse-proof an opening that does not need to lock; for a locked door the ALX80 with Vandlgard set is the keyed answer.
26) Is a residential grade lever an acceptable swap for a commercial storeroom lock?
The Schlage ALX80 is a commercial, heavy duty Grade 2 storeroom lock. Grade 3 levers sit at a lighter cycle and strength rating: the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body, the Callan Artino and Callan Bennett are Grade 3 entrance leversets, and the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 passage lever listing 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness. Those are built for residential and light traffic openings, and none of them carries the storeroom function.
27) Which storeroom lever is non-handed for stock that has to fit any door on a property?
The Schlage ALX80 is non-handed, so one lock covers left and right hand openings and the truck or storeroom carries a single part. Among the Grade 2 peers, the Falcon B101 passage lever and the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage lock are both described as non-handed cylindrical designs. For keyed storeroom stock the ALX80 also uses one chassis across all functions, and a further advantage for fleet standardization is that its lever designs suit the Schlage ND Series Grade 1 locks, so heavier openings on the same property can carry matching trim.
28) What is the Schlage ALX80 lever and chassis actually made of?
Zinc and steel construction, with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs in the chassis. The spindle is deep-drawn with five points of lever engagement, which is what stops the Broadway lever drooping or wobbling after it has been hung on for a few thousand cycles. Lever droop is the usual reason a Grade 2 lever lock gets replaced early.
29) Is the Accentra 107S a way to put a Schlage key into Yale hardware on the same master key system?
The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware - it adapts a Yale lock to take a Schlage cylinder, and it is not a lock itself. The Schlage ALX80 already accepts Schlage cylinders directly, in conventional 6-pin C keyway, small format interchangeable core and full size interchangeable core versions, so no adapter is involved. The 107S is only relevant where Yale bodies are already hung and have to join a Schlage key system.
