1) What is the difference between a Schlage B762 and a B760 deadbolt?
Function. The B762 is cylinder by cylinder, ANSI function E0141, meaning you need a key on both the inside and the outside to throw or retract the bolt. The B760 is E0151, a key outside with a thumbturn inside. Double cylinder is what people specify for doors with glass beside or in them, since breaking the glass does not get you to a turn piece. Be aware that many jurisdictions restrict double cylinder deadbolts on required egress doors, so confirm your local code before you spec it.
2) Is the Schlage B762 a Grade 1 deadbolt, and does the cylinder type change that?
Grade rides on the cylinder you order. With a conventional cylinder the B700 Series deadbolt is ANSI/BHMA A156.5 Grade 1 certified. Order it with an FSIC cylinder and it certifies Grade 2; with SFIC it is Grade 3. If a spec on your drawing calls for Grade 1 deadbolts, you have to keep it conventional. The catalogued configuration is the 6-pin conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, which is the Grade 1 build.
3) Can a Schlage B762 be used on a fire rated door?
Yes, as an auxiliary lock. The B Series deadbolt is UL 10C listed and 3-hour fire rated as an auxiliary lock on A label single doors up to 4 feet by 8 feet, and UL 10B listed for neutral pressure doors. Auxiliary means it is in addition to the latching hardware on the opening, not the primary latch. Note the egress issue separately: a double cylinder function needs a key to get out, which is usually not permitted on a required exit door.
4) Will the Schlage B762 drop into the strike prep already in my frame?
The deadbolt ships with a 10-094 strike, square corner with no box, measuring 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inches, and a faceplate of 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches with square corners. If your frame is cut for that standard square corner tubular deadbolt prep, it goes straight in. 5) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage B762 deadbolt?
Three things beyond the finish. Cylinder type: 6-pin conventional in the Schlage C keyway is the default, or 5-pin conventional in the same C keyway. Keying: keyed different is standard, keyed alike if you want a group of locks on one key, or no cylinder at all if you are supplying your own cores. Swap the function, not the series. The B700 Series carries five other functions on the same body: B760 is key outside with thumbturn inside, B761 is key outside with a blank rose inside, B763 is a classroom deadbolt where the inside thumbturn only retracts the bolt, B764 is key outside with no inside trim, and the B680 door bolt is thumbturn only with no exterior trim. For an egress door people usually land on the B760, since the inside turn lets anyone out without a key. Same finishes, same 2-3/4 inch backset, same prep.
8) What is the closest Grade 1 double cylinder deadbolt to a Schlage B762 from another manufacturer?
The Design Hardware D1 Series double cylinder deadbolt is the nearest straight equivalent. Both are Grade 1 double cylinder deadbolts, keyed on both faces with no thumbturn. The D1 Series is listed for 1-3/4 inch doors and rated extra heavy duty, while the B762 is a heavy duty Grade 1 unit in the B700 Series with a 6-pin conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. 9) Is the Falcon D111 a substitute for the Schlage B762?
