Schlage B250 Single Cylinder Deadbolt, Grade 2 Deadlatch

The Schlage B250 is an ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 2 single-cylinder deadlatch for commercial and institutional applications where self-locking re-engagement is required. Unlike a standard deadbolt, the B250's spring-loaded latchbolt automatically deadlocks on door closure, eliminating the need to manually throw the bolt. The inside thumbturn includes a holdback feature that keeps the latch retracted for nightlatch use. Available in two cylinder formats (conventional 6-pin C keyway and Full-Size Interchangeable Core) and seven finishes, the B250 suits apartment entry doors, pool gates, and perimeter openings.

Strength and Security

  • 5/8" throw deadlatch resists prying attacks and shimming of the latch
  • Concealed frame reinforcer protects wood jamb against kick-in attacks
  • Free-spinning, tapered cylinder collar with security insert resists wrenching and prying
  • Thumbturn holdback feature retains the deadlatch in a retracted position when desired
  • UL 437 listed option available - resists drilling and physical attack on the cylinder

Key System Security

  • Open and restricted keyway options
  • Primus XP program geographic exclusivity available
  • Factory master keying available
  • Two cylinder formats: Conventional 6-pin C keyway (P6/PD suffix) and Full-Size Interchangeable Core less core (J suffix) - FSIC format is ideal for institutions managing large key systems where cores are swapped rather than rekeyed

Functional and Aesthetic Options

  • Single cylinder (B250) and double cylinder (B252) functions available
  • 7 finish options spanning brass, bronze, chrome, and matte black
  • Designed to suite with Schlage, Von Duprin, and LCN devices for a cohesive building-wide look

Certifications

  • ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 2 certified (E0122)
  • ADA compliant thumbturn design
  • BAA (Buy American Act) compliant

    Schlage B250P 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

    1) Will the Schlage B250 deadbolt fit a 1-3/4 inch commercial door?
Yes. With the conventional 6-pin cylinder the B250 covers 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the FSIC version stretches to 1-1/2 to 2-1/8 inches. So on a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door either cylinder format works; on a thicker door (a heavy wood entry or a door with added cladding up to 2-1/8 inches), you need the FSIC less-core version.
    2) Is the Schlage B250 a regular deadbolt or a deadlatch?
It is a deadlatch, and that difference decides whether it suits the opening. The bolt is spring loaded and deadlocks itself when the door closes, so nobody has to remember to throw it. Key from outside or the inside turn unit retracts it. That makes it right for apartment entries, pool gates and perimeter doors where self-locking matters. If you want a bolt that stays where you put it until someone throws it, a conventional deadbolt like the Arrow DBX61 single cylinder is the Grade 2 alternative.
    3) Should I order the B250 with a conventional cylinder or the FSIC less core version?
Depends on how you manage keys. The conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder (P6/PD) is the straightforward choice if you rekey locks or run a modest key system, and it ships keyed different with two nickel silver keys. The FSIC less-core version (J suffix) arrives without a core so you drop in your own full-size interchangeable core, which is how schools, hospitals and large campuses handle turnover: pull the core, swap it, no rekeying and no locksmith at the door. FSIC also buys you the wider 1-1/2 to 2-1/8 inch door thickness range.
    4) Will the Schlage B250 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The standard strike is a 10-001 square corner T strike with box, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch. If your existing prep is square corner at that size, the latch drops in. ANSI and round corner strike options are available if the frame is prepped differently. The latch housing is 1 inch in diameter, which is the usual cross bore, and the bolt has a 5/8 inch throw, so the strike pocket has to be deep enough to take it.
    5) I need a key on both sides of the door. Does the B250 do that?
No. The B250 is cylinder x thumbturn, single cylinder only. For key on both sides the matching function is the B252, ANSI E0112, cylinder x cylinder in the same series. Outside the Schlage line, the Dexter DB2000 Series Grade 2 double cylinder covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors and the Design Hardware D1 Series is a Grade 1 double cylinder for 1-3/4 inch. Be aware that double cylinder locks are restricted on egress doors in many jurisdictions.
    6) What is the closest Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt equivalent to the Schlage B250 that uses a Schlage C keyway?
The Hager 3115 is a Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt built around the Schlage C keyway, which is the same keyway family the B250 uses in its conventional 6-pin cylinder format. The 3115 covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, while the B250 covers 1-1/2 inch to 1-3/4 inch with a conventional cylinder and 1-1/2 inch to 2-1/8 inch with FSIC. The functional difference to weigh is the bolt itself: the B250 is a deadlatch that re-engages automatically on door closure, where the 3115 is a conventional deadbolt thrown by key or turn.
    7) I need an interchangeable core deadbolt but the door is 1-3/4 inch and I do not need a deadlatch - what else works?
The Arrow E61 in 26D is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadlock prepped for SFIC and shipped less core, covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Deltana CL200LAIC is another Grade 2 interchangeable core single cylinder deadbolt supplied without a cylinder, on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Both give a core-swap key system like the B250 FSIC option, but the B250 is the one with a deadlocking latchbolt that re-engages on closure and a thumbturn hold-back.
    8) The spec calls for a Grade 1 deadbolt instead of Grade 2 - what steps up from the Schlage B250?
For a Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolt on a cylinder x thumbturn function, the Accentra D111 is Grade 1 on a 2-3/8 inch backset, matching the B250 standard backset, and covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom deadbolt with an adjustable backset. The Dexter DB1000 single cylinder is Grade 1 across 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors. The Delaney LM Series is Grade 1 and ships less core for institutions running their own key system.
    9) The door is thicker than 1-3/4 inch - what deadbolt covers it?
The Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock rated for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch. The Deltana 7312KA2 double cylinder covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. On the Schlage side, the B250 in the FSIC less core format covers 1-1/2 inch to 2-1/8 inch, where the conventional cylinder format stops at 1-3/4 inch - so specifying the FSIC cylinder is often the answer on a thicker door before you change brands.
    10) Egress code says no key on the inside - what deadbolt replaces a keyed thumbturn unit?
The Arrow E60 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock, non-keyed, on a blank plate x thumbturn function for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch - there is no outside cylinder at all. The Corbin Russwin DL3211 and DL2211 are Grade 1 cylindrical deadlocks on a cylinder x blank arrangement for 1-3/4 inch doors, where the inside face carries no operating trim. The B250 is cylinder x thumbturn, keyed outside and free-turning inside.
    11) I need a key required from both sides instead of a thumbturn - what is the double cylinder option?
The Schlage B252 is the double cylinder function in the same B Series family, ANSI E0112, cylinder x cylinder, where the B250 is ANSI E0122 single cylinder. Outside that family, the Hager 3214 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt on the Schlage C keyway for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Dexter DB2000 double cylinder is Grade 2 over the same range, and the Design Hardware D1 Series is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty double cylinder for 1-3/4 inch doors. Confirm the local egress code permits a keyed inside cylinder before specifying any of them.
    12) Does the opening need a fire rated deadbolt, and which ones carry that rating?
The Hager 3115, 3118, 3214 and 3215 all carry a fire rating and are built on the Schlage C keyway. The Cal-Royal CRB800 is a heavy duty single cylinder deadbolt with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch. The Schlage B250 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 2 under function code E0122 and offers a UL 437 listed cylinder option, which is an attack resistance listing on the cylinder rather than a fire rating on the opening - if the door schedule calls for a fire rated deadbolt, specify from the rated peers.
    13) What looks like a substitute for the Schlage B250 but will not drop into the same door prep?
Several deadbolts sit in the same category without being bored-lockset substitutes. The Emtek 2050 and 2051 are European mortise deadbolts with an integrated roller latch, requiring a mortise pocket rather than a bored hole. The Dormakaba D900 is a small case mortise deadbolt. The Codelocks CL200 is a surface mounted deadbolt with key override, and the Detex DX Series mounts on the hinge side with multi-point security. The B250 is a bored deadlatch on a 2-3/8 inch backset with a 1 inch housing diameter latch and a 1-1/8 inch by 2-1/4 inch faceplate.
    14) The existing prep is a 2-3/4 inch backset - what deadbolt suits that opening?
The Deltana CL200LA is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the CL200LAIC is the same on a 2-3/4 inch backset in interchangeable core less cylinder form. The Brinks Raleigh and Mendocino series single cylinder deadbolts use a four way adjustable backset that covers either dimension. The Schlage B250 also handles a 2-3/4 inch prep by ordering the 12-103 deadlatch instead of the standard 12-100.
    15) Will a Schlage B250 match the other Schlage hardware in my building?
It is built to suite with Schlage, Von Duprin and LCN devices, so the trim reads the same as the levers and exit hardware on adjacent openings. Seven finishes are offered across both cylinder formats: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. 626 satin chrome is the common commercial match.
    16) I need a deadbolt keyed to an existing Schlage C key system but not from Schlage. What else works?
Hager builds Grade 2 deadbolts cut for the Schlage C keyway, so they fold into an existing C system. The Hager 3115 is cylinder x thumbturn for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, the 3215 is a single cylinder with a 1 inch throw, and the 3214 is the double cylinder version, all in the same thickness range. Note these are conventional deadbolts, not self-locking deadlatches like the B250, so the bolt has to be thrown by hand.
    17) Is the Schlage B250 strong enough against a kick-in on a wood frame?
There is a concealed frame reinforcer that anchors into the jamb stud to resist kick-in on wood frames, which is where these doors actually fail. On the door side, the 5/8 inch throw deadlatch resists prying and shimming, and the cylinder sits behind a free-spinning tapered collar with a security insert so it cannot be wrenched off. A UL 437 listed cylinder option is available if drill and physical attack resistance is a requirement.
    18) Is the Schlage B250 deadbolt Buy American Act compliant for a government job?
Yes, the B250 is BAA compliant, which is what a public agency or federally funded project needs on the submittal. The thumbturn design is also ADA compliant, so it satisfies the operable-parts requirement on accessible openings without a pinch or twist grip.
    19) Which deadbolts are the direct Grade 2 alternates to the Schlage B250 for an apartment entry door?
On a like-for-like Grade 2 single cylinder basis, the Arrow DBX61, the Dexter DB2000 single cylinder, the Falcon D211, and the Cal-Royal CB160 are all Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolts. The Dexter DB2000 covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch and the Falcon D211 is a medium duty Grade 2, the same duty level carried on the B250. The Cal-Royal CB160 adds a tamper-resistant cylinder guard, comparable in intent to the B250 free-spinning tapered collar with security insert.
    20) What is a lighter-duty deadbolt to use where a commercial Grade 2 deadlatch is more than the opening needs?
The Cal-Royal ED500 is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with an adjustable backset covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Cal-Royal LSD is Grade 3 with an ADA ergonomic thumbturn over the same thickness range. The Callan Model 200S is a Grade 3 single cylinder with square trim. All three are cylinder x thumbturn like the B250, but none is a deadlatch - the B250 latchbolt deadlocks automatically when the door closes, which is what makes it suit self-locking perimeter and apartment entry openings.
    21) Can I use a keypad or credential deadbolt on the same door instead of a keyed one?
The electronic route changes how the door is managed rather than how it locks. The Delaney KP400 is a Grade 2 electronic deadbolt with a programmable remote. The Codelocks CL2200 is a medium duty electronic surface deadbolt and the CL2210 is an electronic mortise deadbolt. The Dormakaba Saffire LX-D is an RFID electronic deadbolt with BLE and electronic lock override, and the Nova-D is an RFID multihousing smart deadbolt. The B250 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock, so it carries no batteries and no credential programming.
    22) For a classroom opening, which deadbolt is specified instead of a standard commercial one?
The Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom function deadbolt with an adjustable backset, and the Falcon D211 is the Grade 2 medium duty classroom function on single cylinder operation. The Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway and 6-pin cylinder for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage B250 is a keyed single cylinder deadlatch on function E0122, retracted by key outside or turn inside.
    23) What deadbolt matches a decorative or residential-style opening rather than a commercial one?
The Emtek #11 Tuscany is a lost wax cast bronze cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt, and the Emtek 8323 Modern Disc is a brass double cylinder. Baldwin covers the same territory with the Estates 8011 contemporary 1-5/8 inch double cylinder and the Reserve contemporary round and square double cylinder deadbolts. Bravura offers Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolts in traditional round (310B Elite), contemporary round (310RC Elite), contemporary square (310SC Elite) and rectangle trim. The Schlage B250 is a commercial unit offered in seven finishes spanning brass, bronze, chrome and matte black.
    24) Is there a deadbolt that only needs one side of the door prepped?
The Callan Model 205S is a Grade 3 one-sided half-bore deadbolt, prepped on a single face rather than through-bored. That suits storage rooms and openings with no exterior operation. The Schlage B250 is a through-bored single cylinder unit with an outside cylinder and an inside thumbturn carrying a hold-back feature, so it needs the full bore and covers both faces.

Just got the Schlage B250 Single Cylinder Deadlatch, and it's pretty impressive. The Grade 2 rating gives me peace of mind about security. The installation was a breeze, even for a non-pro like me. The only downside is that the latch could be a bit smoother in operation. Overall, a solid deadlatch for my doors!

      ZenSupply - Great customer support

Posted by Gary Videlock on Aug 15th 2022

This is more a review of ZenSupply than the Schlage product. I ordered new B250 deadbolts for a recently purchased condo and unattached garage. ZenSupply customer service reached out to me to assure me that my locks will be keyed alike (as requested) instead of zero-bitted. They did the keying and shipped the product quickly and the installation went perfectly. Many thanks to the team at ZenSupply for being responsive and having a broad supply of products that they can ship quickly.
