Schlage 26-072 S123 112 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage 26-072 cylinder come with keys, or do I need to order them separately?
Two keys come with each 26-072 cylinder. For a property manager replacing cylinders across a run of storefront doors, that is two keys per opening out of the box; anything beyond that, order additional cut keys in the matching keyway section.
2) Do I need to specify left hand or right hand for a Schlage 26-072 mortise cylinder?
No handing to specify. The 26-072 is non-handed, so the same cylinder goes into a left or right hand door. The cam orientation is set by how far you thread the cylinder into the lock case, not by the hand of the opening. What you do have to specify is finish and keyway.
3) Is the Schlage 26-072 cylinder certified to any ANSI standard for commercial use?
BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, the auxiliary cylinder standard, and it is a commercial-rated part rather than a residential one. That is the certification an institutional or MRO buyer needs on the submittal for a spec that calls out A156.5 cylinders.
4) What finishes does the Schlage 26-072 mortise cylinder come in, and can I match the trim already on my doors?
Fourteen finishes are available on the 26-072, so the exposed cylinder ring can be matched to existing hardware: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. On aluminum storefront, 626 and 630 are the usual matches; 613 and 622 suit darker anodized or painted entrances.
5) Can I use a Schlage 26-072 mortise cylinder on a rim exit device or a key-in-lever lock?
Not as it ships. The 26-072 is configured as a mortise cylinder with the Adams Rite cam. It is built on the Schlage modular platform, so the same core converts to mortise, rim or key-in-lever by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, but that means ordering the correct rear housing and cam for the application, not installing this one as-is on a rim device. For a rim application from another brand ZenSupply stocks, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece.
6) We run interchangeable core across our facility. Is the Schlage 26-072 an IC cylinder?
No. The 26-072 is a conventional pinned 6-pin mortise cylinder, keyed to Schlage Classic or Everest 29 sections, not a small or large format interchangeable core. If you are standardizing a facility on interchangeable core so maintenance can rekey without pulling hardware, look at the BEST 1CB 150 Series interchangeable core cylinder or the BEST 1CDF drill-resistant 7-pin patented core, and for a large format IC mortise housing the Corbin Russwin 1080 is a 1-1/2 inch LFIC 6-pin mortise cylinder.
7) My storefront door has a cylinder pull rather than a lever. Is the Schlage 26-072 the right part?
Depends on what the pull is. The 26-072 is a replacement mortise cylinder that threads into a lock case, listed for Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches. If your door instead has an Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock behind a cylinder pull, the pull assembly itself is the part to replace: the Adams Rite 4024 uses a trim plate mounting and the 4025 uses through-screws, both for MS1847 systems, and the 4026 is the version for wood door deadlocks. A mortise cylinder alone will not give you the pull.
8) Can I get the Schlage 26-072 in a high security or patented keyway?
Yes. The 26-072 is offered in both basic security and enhanced security configurations, and the modular platform supports Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems. Primus XP gives you patented key control and geographic exclusivity for a property where unauthorized key duplication is the concern; Classic and Everest 29 sections cover standard commercial keying. Specify the keyway section when you order, since it has to match whatever system the rest of the building runs.
9) We are standardizing a campus on interchangeable core so maintenance can rekey without pulling cylinders. What replaces a conventional mortise cylinder like the 26-072?
Two routes cover that. The Corbin Russwin 1080 is a 1-1/2 inch six-pin large format interchangeable core mortise cylinder built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam, so it holds the same 1-1/2 inch length as the Schlage 26-072 while accepting a removable core. On the small format side, the BEST 1CB Peaks 150 series and the BEST 1CDF drill resistant patented seven-pin brass 150 series are interchangeable core cylinders, and the BEST 1C standard five-pin core covers the core itself. The 26-072 is a conventional cylinder, keyed with two keys supplied, and rekeying it means repinning the plug rather than turning a control key.
10) Same hardware but the door is wood instead of aluminum. Does the Adams Rite cylinder still apply?
The lock changes, and so does the part. The Adams Rite 4026 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull designed for use with the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock and deadlatch, which is the wood door version of that lock family. The Schlage 26-072 mortise cylinder is supplied with the Adams Rite cam and lists compatibility with the Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches, which are the aluminum stile locks. Identify the lock case in the door first, because the cam and the mounting follow the lock, not the door material by itself.
11) The lock on my door is a lever, not a deadlatch. Do I still order a mortise cylinder?
Not usually. Levers and knobs take a key-in-lever or key-in-knob cylinder, which is a different body and a different retainer. The Falcon A23161-05 G is a key in lever cylinder in the RU/T series, six-pin G keyway, keyed different and supplied with two cut keys. The Kaba Ilco 1539 is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, the Kaba Ilco 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent, and the Kaba Ilco 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder. The Schlage 26-072 is a mortise cylinder with an Adams Rite cam, which threads into a mortise lock body. Confirm which of the three the door actually has before ordering, since the modular Schlage cylinder is adaptable to mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing.
12) I am replacing the outside cylinder on a residential deadbolt. Is a commercial mortise cylinder the right part?
Different application. Residential deadbolts and handlesets take a rim type or retrofit cylinder sized to that lock. The Medeco 1012040 is a six-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the Medeco 1075127 is a five-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts, the Medeco 1065140 is a five-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder, and the Medeco 1065244 is a five-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece. The Schlage 26-072 is a commercial mortise cylinder, threaded into a mortise lock body and turned by a cam rather than a tailpiece.
13) I only need to fill the hole on a door that is no longer keyed. Is there a simpler part than a keyed cylinder?
For a hole that no longer needs to operate, the BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder with a 1-5/32 inch diameter is a blank cylinder body with no working plug behind it, so it dresses the opening without a key. The Schlage 26-072 is a functioning six-pin mortise cylinder supplied with two keys and an Adams Rite cam, number L583-447, and is the part when the door still has to lock and unlock. Note the 12E is a rim body, so it suits a rim prep rather than a threaded mortise pocket.
14) Our spec calls for cylinders certified to ANSI A156.5. Which of these meet that?
The Schlage 26-072 is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001 and is a commercial cylinder, offered with both basic security and enhanced security features. Among the mortise cylinders alongside it, the Adams Rite 4036 is a Grade 1 cylinder and the Corbin Russwin 1000 and 1080 are Grade 1 series mortise cylinders, with the 1080 in a 1-1/2 inch large format interchangeable core configuration for Schlage L9000 mortise locks. For a facility standardizing on one keyway across many openings, the Schlage modular cylinder supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, which lets a single cylinder platform carry different security levels within the same specification.
