Schlage 26-072 S123 134 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Schlage 26-072 cylinder on a standard mortise lock instead of an Adams Rite deadlatch?
Not as it ships. The cam on the 26-072 is the Adams Rite pattern, L583-447, cut for the 4500 and 4700 deadlatches, and a standard mortise lock takes a different cam. The upside is that it is a Schlage modular cylinder, so changing the cam, tailpiece or rear housing reconfigures it for mortise, rim or key-in-lever service. If you want a mortise cylinder already set up for a Schlage L9000 mortise lock, the Corbin Russwin 1080, 1-1/2 inch with the A01 cam, is listed for those locks.
2) I need a replacement key cylinder for the lock in an aluminum storefront door. Is this the right one?
If the latch in the door is an Adams Rite 4500 or 4700 deadlatch, the Schlage 26-072 is the cylinder for it. Those two deadlatch families are what sit in most aluminum storefront and glass entry doors, and the 26-072 carries the Adams Rite cam, L583-447, that drives them. If you are not sure what is in the door, back the existing cylinder out and look at the cam: the Adams Rite cam is the flat, offset blade rather than the cloverleaf or straight cam used on standard mortise locks.
3) Can a Schlage 26-072 be keyed into the master key system we already run in the building?
Keyway is a choice you make on the order, so it can be matched to an existing system. The 26-072 is offered in the Classic sections C, E, EF, FG and G, and in Everest 29 sections including C123, C234, S125 and S345. The modular platform supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so a building standardizing on Everest or moving up to Primus XP can keep one cylinder type across the openings. Specify the same section your existing cylinders use and hand it to your keying schedule.
4) I am swapping cylinders on several storefront doors. What comes with each Schlage 26-072 and what else do I need?
Each 26-072 arrives as a complete replacement cylinder with the Adams Rite cam, L583-447, already on it, plus two keys. For a straight swap into a 4500 or 4700 deadlatch there is nothing else to source, provided you order the same keyway section your other openings use and the finish you want. Cylinders are non-handed, so you do not need to split the order by door swing.
5) Does the Schlage 26-072 come in a finish that matches the rest of the hardware on our entry doors?
Twelve finishes cover it: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. On commercial aluminum entrances 626 and 630 are the two that usually line up with existing trim. The front housing is finished to match the locks, so the exposed face is the part you are matching.
6) Is the Schlage 26-072 cylinder certified to a commercial standard we can put on a spec?
It is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, the standard covering auxiliary locks and cylinders, and it is a commercial grade part rather than a residential one. That is the line to cite on a submittal for a facility standardizing its cylinders. Security level is also part of the order: the 26-072 is offered in basic security and enhanced security configurations, the latter being where a restricted, patented key section belongs.
7) What else can I put in an Adams Rite deadlatch besides the Schlage 26-072?
Adams Rite's own 4036 mortise cylinder is the obvious alternative, a Grade 1 cylinder with a stated 1/2 inch minimum door thickness. The deciding factor is usually the key system, not the latch: the 26-072 puts the opening on a Schlage section, Classic or Everest 29, with Primus XP available if you want a restricted key. If the building already keys everything to Schlage, the 26-072 keeps that going. If it does not, the 4036 is the straight Adams Rite route.
8) The narrow stile door has an Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock and nothing on the outside to grab. What goes there instead of a plain mortise cylinder?
That opening calls for a cylinder pull, which combines the key cylinder and an outside pull in one part. The Adams Rite 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting for MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch systems, and the 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws for the same MS1847 deadlock. For a wood door the 4026 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull designed for the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock and deadlatch. The Schlage 26-072 is the cylinder on its own, a commercial mortise cylinder with the Adams Rite cam L583-447 listed for Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches, so it suits an opening that already has its pull or lever hardware.
9) We key everything to Schlage C. Can a deadlatch cylinder and an exit device cylinder run on the same key?
Yes, if you order both in the C section. The 26-072 is available in C keyway for the Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches, and the Detex MC65, a 1-1/8 inch six pin mortise cylinder, is supplied in Schlage C keyway for Detex hardware. Same key section means your keying house can cut them to the same change or master. What does not carry over is the cam: the 26-072 has the Adams Rite cam L583-447 and is not a drop-in for the Detex, so order each opening by the hardware it goes into.
10) How does the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder differ from the Schlage 26-072 for an aluminum storefront deadlatch?
The Adams Rite 4036 is a mortise cylinder with five-pin security in the 4036 series, rated Grade 1, and it works on doors from 1/2 inch minimum thickness. The Schlage 26-072 is a mortise cylinder supplied with an Adams Rite cam, cam number L583-447, and is listed for Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches. It is non-handed, BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, and comes with two keys. For a locksmith the deciding difference is usually the key system rather than the body: the 26-072 is offered across Schlage keyways including C, E, C234 and the Everest S-prefix keyways such as S123 and S235, and supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so it can be brought onto an existing Schlage masterkey system.
11) Is the Detex MC65 the same as the Schlage 26-072 if I need a mortise cylinder on a Schlage C system?
They are two different cylinders that can both land on a Schlage C key system. The Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch six-pin commercial grade mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway, in the MC65 series. The Schlage 26-072 is also offered with the C keyway, along with C123, C234 and the Everest S-prefix keyways, and it ships with the Adams Rite cam, cam number L583-447, listed for Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches. Length is the practical check before ordering either one: the MC65 is a fixed 1-1/8 inch cylinder, while the 26-072 is a modular cylinder whose length is set by the rear housing, with six rear housing lengths available to suit thicker doors.
12) Will a Corbin Russwin 3070 rim cylinder work in place of a Schlage 26-072?
No, those are two different mounting families. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a six-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, in the 3000 series, and a rim cylinder drives the lock through that flat tailpiece from the back face of the door. The Medeco 1012040 is the same idea, a six-pin lazy motion rim cylinder built for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts. The Schlage 26-072 is a mortise cylinder, threaded into the lock body and turning an Adams Rite cam, cam number L583-447, to operate Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches. If the existing part unscrews out of the lock case and has a cam on the back, a rim cylinder is not the replacement.
13) A vendor quoted a Corbin Russwin 1080 with a Schlage cam. Does that drop into the same opening as the 26-072?
The Schlage reference on the 1080 points at a different lock. The Corbin Russwin 1080 is a 1-1/2 inch six-pin large format interchangeable core mortise cylinder in the Grade 1 1080 series, built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks and supplied with the A01 Schlage L cam, a cloverleaf cam. The Schlage 26-072 is supplied with an Adams Rite cam, number L583-447, and is listed for Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches. The cam is the part that engages the lock, so a cloverleaf cam sized for an L9000 mortise lock body and an Adams Rite cam for a narrow stile deadlatch are not interchangeable even though both cylinders thread into a mortise pocket.
14) We rekey constantly across a portfolio. What is the alternative to a conventional mortise cylinder like the 26-072?
Interchangeable core is the other route. The BEST 1CB Peaks is a 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, the BEST 1C is a standard five-pin cylinder core, and the BEST 1CDF is a drill resistant patented interchangeable core in seven-pin brass, also 150 series. Corbin Russwin offers the same idea in mortise form with the 1080, a 1-1/2 inch six-pin large format interchangeable core mortise cylinder. Those let the core itself be exchanged as a unit. The Schlage 26-072 is a conventional commercial mortise cylinder, BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, supplied with two keys, and it takes a different approach to inventory: one modular cylinder converts to three cylinder types by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, covering mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications from one stocked body.
15) Our facility spec calls for certified commercial cylinders. How do the common mortise cylinders line up on grade and certification?
The Schlage 26-072 is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001 and is a commercial cylinder. The Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder is Grade 1 and covers doors from 1/2 inch minimum thickness. Corbin Russwin lists its mortise cylinders in Grade 1 series as well: the 1000 series 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder with the A02 straight cam, and the 1070 series 1-1/4 inch six-pin mortise housing with the A01 cloverleaf cam. The Detex MC65 is described as a commercial grade six-pin mortise cylinder with the Schlage C keyway. For a facility standardizing across many openings, the cam and the keyway usually decide the order once the certification requirement is satisfied, since each of these is built around a different cam.
16) I have a deadbolt on a wood entry and a storefront deadlatch. Does one cylinder cover both, and what are the deadbolt-side options?
They are separate parts on the shelf. For deadbolt and handleset work the Kaba Ilco 1549 is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder, the Medeco 1075127 is a five-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts, and the Medeco 1065140 is a five-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and for Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder use. The Schlage 26-072 sits on the storefront side, a mortise cylinder with the Adams Rite cam L583-447 for Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches. Where the two sides can be pulled together is keying: the 26-072 is offered across Schlage keyways including C, E, G and the Everest S-prefix keyways, and supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems.
17) I need something to fill a cylinder hole where no key operation is wanted. Is a BEST 12E an option next to a working cylinder like the 26-072?
The BEST 12E is a dummy rim cylinder with a 1-5/32 inch diameter, so it presents a cylinder face without key operation and mounts as a rim cylinder does. The Schlage 26-072 is the opposite case, a keyed commercial mortise cylinder with an Adams Rite cam, cam number L583-447, listed for Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches, supplied with two keys and offered in finishes from 605 bright brass and 626 satin chrome through 630 satin stainless steel and 613 oil rubbed bronze to match surrounding hardware. Choose by whether the opening needs to be operated by key or only needs a matching face.
