Schlage 26-072 S123 158 609 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use any Schlage mortise cylinder in an Adams Rite deadlatch, or does the cam matter?
The cam decides it. A mortise cylinder body threads into almost any mortise lock, but the cam is what engages the lock case, and an Adams Rite deadlatch needs the Adams Rite cam. The 26-072 comes with it, cam L583-447, for 4500 and 4700 deadlatches. Cylinders supplied with other cams, for instance the Corbin Russwin 1000 Series with an A02 straight cam or the 1070 mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam, are built to drive different lock cases. If there is already a Schlage mortise cylinder in the van, read the cam before assuming it will retract the latch.
2) Does the Schlage 26-072 cylinder have to be ordered by hand for a left hand or right hand door?
There is no handing to specify. The 26-072 is non-handed, so the same cylinder goes into a left hand or a right hand opening and one part number covers both across a run of entrances. Each cylinder comes with two keys.
3) Which keyway do I order on a Schlage 26-072 cylinder to key it into the system I already have?
Order the keyway section that matches the keys already in the building, not a default. The 26-072 is offered in Classic sections including C, C123, C134, C235, E, EF, F and FG, and in Everest 29 S sections such as S123, S134, S234 and S345. Schlage's modular cylinder supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so an existing masterkey system can be carried onto the storefront doors rather than leaving them on a separate key. Pull a key off the door you are keying to and read the section stamp before you order.
4) Can I get the Schlage 26-072 cylinder in a finish that matches the door hardware already on my buildings?
Twelve finishes are available: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. On a storefront the cylinder face sits right beside the pull and is one of the few visible pieces, so match on the BHMA finish number stamped on the existing hardware rather than on the finish name. Satin chrome 626 and satin stainless 630 are what most aluminum entrances are already running.
5) Our facility is standardized on interchangeable core. Will a Schlage 26-072 take a removable core?
No. The 26-072 is a pinned modular mortise cylinder built around Schlage Classic, Everest 29 and Primus XP key systems, so it is keyed by pinning the plug rather than by dropping a core into a housing. For a facility running small format interchangeable core, look instead at BEST 1C Series standard 5-pin cores, the 1CB 150 Series interchangeable core, or the 1CDF drill resistant 7-pin core, and keep the entrances on the same core system as the rest of the building rather than maintaining two key systems.
6) Can a Schlage 26-072 be converted to a rim or key-in-lever cylinder later?
Yes, and that is the whole idea behind the modular design. One cylinder converts to three cylinder types, mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob, by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, and rear housings come in six lengths to handle thicker doors. For a locksmith carrying stock that means one cylinder plus a few components instead of a separate part number for every application. As ordered, the 26-072 is set up as a mortise cylinder with the Adams Rite cam.
7) Is the Schlage 26-072 cylinder certified for a commercial hardware spec?
BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, and it is a commercial product rather than a residential one, which is what a hardware schedule on an office, school or healthcare entrance normally calls for. The certification sits on the cylinder itself, so it can be cited against the cylinder line item on a submittal.
8) Will an Adams Rite 4025 cylinder pull do the same job as the Schlage 26-072 on a 4500 deadlatch?
No, they solve different problems. The Adams Rite 4025 is a five-pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws and the 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting; both are designed for use with the Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock/deadlatch, and a cylinder pull combines the key cylinder with a door pull on a narrow stile. The 4026 is the wood door counterpart, designed for the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock/deadlatch. The Schlage 26-072 is the cylinder alone, supplied with the Adams Rite cam, number L583-447, and listed for Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches. If the stile already has a cylinder in a 4500 or 4700 deadlatch, the 26-072 is the part that replaces it.
9) Adams Rite makes a mortise cylinder of its own for these doors. How does the Schlage 26-072 differ from the Adams Rite 4036?
Both are mortise cylinders that thread into the lock case. The Schlage 26-072 is supplied with the Adams Rite cam, cam number L583-447, and is listed compatible with Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches; it is non-handed, BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, and comes with two keys. The Adams Rite 4036 is a five-pin mortise cylinder in the 4036 series, rated Grade 1, and calls for a minimum door thickness of 1/2 inch. The deciding factor for most buyers is the key system: the 26-072 is cut in Schlage keyways such as C, C123 and S123, so it folds into a Schlage masterkey system already running on the rest of the property.
10) We key the whole building to Schlage C. Other than the Schlage 26-072, what mortise cylinder comes in that keyway?
The Detex MC65 is a mortise cylinder built around the Schlage C keyway, 1-1/8 inch, 6-pin, commercial grade. The Schlage 26-072 is also offered in C keyway along with C123, C134 and S123, so either can be cut to an existing Schlage C system. The difference is what each is set up to drive. The 26-072 carries the Adams Rite cam, number L583-447, and is listed for Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches, and the modular design lets you change the cam, tailpiece or rear housing to convert it among mortise, rim and key-in-lever, with six rear housing lengths to accommodate thicker doors.
11) A Corbin Russwin 3070 turned up on the job instead of the Schlage 26-072. Can it go into a 4500 deadlatch?
No, those are two different cylinder formats. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing in the 3000 series with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, and a rim cylinder mounts through the door face to drive that tailpiece into a rim device. The Schlage 26-072 is a mortise cylinder that threads into the lock and turns the Adams Rite cam, number L583-447, which is what an Adams Rite 4500 or 4700 deadlatch is expecting. One more part worth ruling out while you are at it: the BEST 12E series is a dummy rim cylinder at 1-5/32 inch diameter, which is a dummy rather than a keyed working cylinder.
12) Our facility standard is interchangeable core so maintenance can rekey without pulling hardware. How does that approach compare with the Schlage 26-072?
They are two different rekeying models. BEST interchangeable cores come out of the housing with a control key: the 1CB is a Peaks 1CB 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, the 1CDF is a drill resistant patented interchangeable core, 7-pin, brass, in the 150 series, and the 1C5 is a standard 5-pin cylinder core. Corbin Russwin's 1080 is a 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam. The Schlage 26-072 takes the modular route instead: one cylinder converts among mortise, rim and key-in-lever by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, and it supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems.
13) The opening is a standard mortise lock case rather than an Adams Rite deadlatch. Is the Schlage 26-072 still the cylinder to order?
Check the cam before you commit. The 26-072 is supplied with the Adams Rite cam, number L583-447, and is listed for Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches, and that cam profile is specific to that hardware. A conventional mortise lock case generally calls for a different cam: the Corbin Russwin 1000 series Grade 1 mortise cylinder at 1-1/2 inch length uses an A02 straight cam, and the Corbin Russwin 1070 series 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing uses an A01 cloverleaf cam. The Schlage modular cylinder is designed to be reconfigured for exactly this situation, since changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing converts it between cylinder types.
14) Half the doors on the property have lever locks rather than deadlatches. What cylinder replaces the key in those?
Those openings take a key-in-lever or key-in-knob cylinder rather than a mortise cylinder. The Kaba Ilco 1539 is a key-in-knob/lever universal cylinder, the 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent, and the 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder. The Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder, RU/T series, 6-pin G keyway, keyed different, supplied with two cut keys. Emtek's CY4 cylinder covers Emtek trim. As supplied, the Schlage 26-072 is a mortise cylinder with the Adams Rite cam for 4500 and 4700 deadlatches, though the modular platform underneath it is adaptable to mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications by changing the front and back housing.
15) For apartment entry deadbolts and handlesets on wood doors, is the Schlage 26-072 the right cylinder?
Those doors usually want a rim or deadbolt cylinder instead. Medeco's 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts, and the 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and for Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinders; the 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece. Kaba Ilco's 1549 is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder. The Schlage 26-072 is a commercial mortise cylinder supplied with the Adams Rite cam, number L583-447, for Adams Rite 4500 and 4700 deadlatches.
