Schlage 30-016 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage 30-016 accept Everest 29 or Primus XP cores, or only Classic?
All three. The Schlage modular cylinder line supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, and the 30-016 housing is prepped for a full size interchangeable core in any Schlage keyway. So a building already keyed on Everest 29 can use the same housing as one still on Classic.
2) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage 30-016 1-1/2 in. mortise housing with Schlage L cam?
The nearest peer is the Corbin Russwin 1080, a 1-1/2 in. interchangeable-core mortise cylinder, 6-pin, built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam. Both land on the same opening: a 1-1/2 in. mortise cylinder driving a Schlage L cam in an L-series mortise lock. The difference is the core system - the Schlage 30-016 is FSIC prep less core, so it takes a Schlage full-size interchangeable core, while the Corbin Russwin 1080 is an LFIC cylinder taking a large-format Corbin Russwin core. Pick by which core family your keying is already built on.
3) Which core goes with a housing ordered less core, and are BEST cores an option?
The Schlage 30-016 ships FSIC prep less core, so the core is a separate line. BEST offers the 1C 5-pin standard cylinder core, the Peaks 1CB 150 series interchangeable core, and the 1CDF drill-resistant patented interchangeable core in 7-pin brass. Those are BEST-format cores on BEST keying; the Schlage housing is prepped for the Schlage full-size interchangeable core and supports Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems. Order the core in the format your master key system is built on.
4) What looks like a substitute for the Schlage 30-016 but will not work?
A rim cylinder housing will not. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 in. tailpiece - it mounts through the door and drives a rim device by tailpiece, where the Schlage 30-016 threads into a mortise lock case and drives it with a Schlage L cam. The two are not swappable in either direction regardless of keyway. Confirm you are ordering for a mortise lock body, not a rim exit device.
5) What mortise cylinder should I use on an aluminum storefront deadlock instead of the Schlage 30-016?
For a narrow-stile aluminum door, the Adams Rite 4036 is the mortise cylinder built for that application - a Grade 1 five-pin mortise cylinder rated down to a 1/2 in. minimum door thickness. The Schlage 30-016 is cammed for Schlage L mortise locks, which is a hollow metal or wood door lock case rather than a storefront deadlock. If the door is glass front aluminum, the 4036 is the family to look at.
6) Do I need to order a left hand and right hand version of the Schlage 30-016 housing?
No, one part covers both. The 30-016 mortise housing is non-handed, so the same housing goes on a left hand or right hand mortise lock. For a property manager standardizing across a building, that means one line item rather than two.
7) What finishes does the Schlage 30-016 mortise housing come in to match my existing lock trim?
Eleven finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. Front housing parts are finish specific on the Schlage modular system, so match the BHMA number on the lock you are servicing rather than eyeballing it. The 626AM antimicrobial option is the one healthcare facilities usually spec.
8) I just need a complete keyed mortise cylinder, not a housing. What else do you carry?
Several conventional mortise cylinders that arrive as one piece. The Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 Series comes in 1-1/2 inch with an A02 straight cam, the 1070 Grade 1 Series in 1-1/4 inch 6-pin with an A01 cloverleaf cam, and the Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway. Cam style has to match the lock, so pick on cam and length. The Schlage 30-016 is the option when you are building on interchangeable cores instead.
9) I need a rim cylinder for an exit device, not a mortise one. Is the 30-016 the wrong part?
Wrong part for a rim application. The 30-016 carries a mortise cam and threads into a mortise lock body. For a rim device you need a rim housing with a tailpiece: the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, and the BEST 12E Series is a 1-5/32 inch diameter dummy rim cylinder where no keyed function is required.
10) Can I swap just the housing to change the finish on an existing Schlage mortise cylinder?
Yes, and it is the usual reason to buy the 30-016 on its own. The front housing is offered in all the lock finishes, so a damaged or mismatched mortise housing comes off and the same core goes into a new one, in the finish that matches the rest of the trim. No rekeying, no new key, and the L cam is already fitted for L Series mortise locks other than the L9060 exterior.
11) If the opening does not need an interchangeable core, what mortise cylinder can go in instead of the Schlage 30-016?
The Corbin Russwin 1000 is a Grade 1 mortise cylinder in the same 1-1/2 in. length, supplied with an A02 straight cam rather than a Schlage L cam. It is a fixed-core cylinder, so the plug is keyed in the cylinder instead of dropping in a core the way the Schlage 30-016 does with its FSIC prep less core. Confirm the lock takes a straight cam before substituting, since the 30-016 is cammed for Schlage L mortise locks.
12) Does the Schlage 30-016 work in a key-in-lever or key-in-knob lock?
Not as ordered. The 30-016 is the mortise housing with the Schlage L cam, and the modular cylinder converts between mortise, rim and key-in-lever types by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing - so a key-in-lever job needs the key-in-lever front and rear components, not the mortise housing. For a purpose-built key-in-lever cylinder, the Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder with a 6-pin G keyway, keyed different with two cut keys, and the Kaba Ilco 1539 is a universal key-in-knob and lever cylinder.
13) Is the Schlage 30-016 housing durable enough for a high traffic commercial door?
It is a commercial part, built in stainless steel and cut to the industry standard 1/2 inch plug diameter. That plug standard is why the housing takes standard Schlage cores and why replacement parts stay available years into a building's life, which matters more than the metal on a fleet of doors you have to keep serviceable.
14) Is there a non-keyed option for an opening that only needs the look of a cylinder?
The BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder, 1-5/32 in. diameter, fills a rim prep without any keying function. It is a rim-format dummy, so it is not a stand-in for the Schlage 30-016, which is a working mortise housing prepped for a full-size interchangeable core in a Schlage L mortise lock. Use the dummy only where the opening is inactive.
