Schlage 30-021 S123 114 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage 30-021 mortise cylinder work in my L9000 mortise lock?
The 30-021 is built for Schlage L Series mortise locks, with the one exception of the L9060 exterior cylinder position. It ships with the Schlage L cam (cam number L583-475), which is the cam those locks expect. If the opening you are working on is an L9060 exterior, this is not the cylinder for it.
2) Does this Schlage mortise cylinder meet a commercial spec for an institutional job?
It is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, the auxiliary lock and cylinder standard, and it is a commercial product rather than a residential one. That is the certification line to put on a submittal for a school, hospital, or government facility.
3) Will the Schlage 30-021 fit an exit device or a rim lock?
Not as it ships. A rim device needs a rim cylinder with a tailpiece, and the 30-021 is set up as a mortise cylinder with a Schlage L cam, which threads into a mortise lock case. For a rim application, look at the Corbin Russwin 3070 6-pin rim cylinder housing with the 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, or the BEST 12E Series rim cylinder. The Schlage cylinder body itself can be reconfigured to rim by changing the rear housing and tailpiece, but the mortise parts on the 30-021 are not what a rim device uses.
4) I need a mortise cylinder for an aluminum storefront door, not a Schlage mortise lock. Is this the right one?
Probably not. The 30-021 carries the Schlage L cam, which is cut for Schlage L Series mortise lock cases. Aluminum storefront deadlocks take a different cam and a much shorter housing. The Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder is the storefront answer here: it is a Grade 1 five-pin cylinder rated down to a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is the range narrow stile aluminum lives in. For an Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock specifically, the 4024 and 4025 cylinder pulls are the matched parts.
5) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage 30-021 mortise cylinder if I need a 1-1/4 inch 6-pin housing from a different manufacturer?
The Corbin Russwin 1070 Grade 1 series 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing is the nearest match on dimension and pin count. The version stocked with an A01 cloverleaf cam is CR1070-114-A01. The Schlage 30-021 carries a Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475, so the cam is the point of difference: confirm your lock body takes a cloverleaf cam before swapping in the Corbin Russwin. Both are 6-pin mortise cylinders at the same 1-1/4 inch length.
6) My opening is an Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock on an aluminum storefront. Does a Schlage 30-021 work there?
That opening takes an Adams Rite cylinder pull rather than a Schlage L cam mortise cylinder. The Adams Rite 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting for MS1847 deadlock systems, and the 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws for the same MS1847 deadlock. For a wood door deadlock, the Adams Rite 4026 five pin tumbler cylinder pull is built for the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock/deadlatch. The Schlage 30-021 is compatible with Schlage L mortise locks, less the L9060 exterior, so it belongs on that lock family instead.
7) We are standardizing a building on interchangeable cores. Can I keep the Schlage 30-021 or do I need a different cylinder family?
An interchangeable core program runs on a core-and-housing product rather than the fixed 6-pin 30-021 mortise cylinder. BEST offers the 1C series standard 5-pin cylinder core, the Peaks 1CB 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, and the 1CDF drill resistant preferred patented interchangeable core 7-pin brass 150 series. Those let a facility rekey by pulling the core with a control key. The 30-021 rekeys by pinning and is the choice where the openings stay on a conventional Schlage keyway program across the C, E, F, G and S keyway families.
8) Do I have to worry about handing when ordering a Schlage 30-021 mortise cylinder?
No. The 30-021 is non-handed, so the same part covers left and right hand openings. Handing lives in the mortise lock case, not the cylinder. What you do have to specify is finish, keyway, and whether you want it keyed alike or keyed different.
9) Can one Schlage modular cylinder be converted to a rim or key-in-lever cylinder later?
That is the point of the modular design. By changing the tailpiece, cam, or rear housing, the same cylinder body becomes a mortise, rim, or key-in-lever/key-in-knob cylinder. For a locksmith carrying stock in a van, that means one cylinder covers three applications instead of three separate part numbers. As delivered, the 30-021 is configured as a mortise cylinder with the L cam.
10) Is a 6-pin Schlage mortise cylinder more secure than a 5-pin one?
Six pins give more possible key combinations than five, which matters when you are building a master key system with real depth across a building. The 30-021 is 6-pin and is offered in both basic and enhanced security configurations, and it works within the Everest 29 and Primus XP key systems as well as Classic. Several of the 5-pin cylinders in the same category, such as the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder, are aimed at simpler standalone openings rather than a keyed system.
11) Is the Schlage 30-021 a whole new lock or just the replacement cylinder?
Just the cylinder. It is a replacement part that threads into a mortise lock case you already have in the door, supplied with two keys. If the lock body itself is worn out or you are changing the lock function, the cylinder alone will not fix that.
12) Can I standardize a whole building on one Schlage cylinder to cut down on parts I stock?
That is what the modular platform is for. One cylinder body covers mortise, rim, and key-in-lever or key-in-knob openings by swapping the front and back housings, and front housings come in every finish so the cylinder still matches the lock trim on each door. Six rear housing lengths cover the thicker doors in the mix. For a property manager or MRO buyer, that means stocking cylinder bodies and a handful of housings instead of a separate SKU per lock type.
13) What is the difference between the Schlage 30-021 and a rim cylinder like the Corbin Russwin 3070?
They mount to different lock types. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece in the 3000 series, driving an exit device or rim lock through a tailpiece. The Schlage 30-021 is a mortise cylinder that threads into a mortise lock case and turns the lock through a Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475. Order the 3070 for a rim device and the 30-021 for a Schlage L mortise lock; the two are not interchangeable even though both are 6-pin.
14) Can I use a Falcon A23161-05 G in place of a Schlage 30-021?
No. The Falcon A23161-05 G is a key in lever cylinder for the RU/T series, 6-pin G keyway, keyed different, supplied with 2 cut keys. It fits a lever lock chassis, not a mortise lock case. The Schlage 30-021 is a mortise cylinder for Schlage L mortise locks less the L9060 exterior and also ships with 2 keys. The G keyway appears on both, so a facility keyed on G can carry the Falcon on its leversets and the 30-021 on its mortise openings under the same key system.
15) I am replacing cylinders on knob and deadbolt locks in an apartment building, not mortise locks. What do I order instead of the Schlage 30-021?
Kaba Ilco makes universal replacement cylinders for those chassis: the 1539 series key-in-knob / lever universal cylinder, the 1549 series key-in-deadbolt cylinder, the 1599 key-in-knob replacement cylinder, and the 1579 knob and lever cylinder for Sargent. Each is listed for a deadbolt function. The Schlage 30-021 is a mortise cylinder and belongs on Schlage L mortise locks, so on a fleet with mixed hardware the mortise openings take the 30-021 and the knob and deadbolt openings take the matching Ilco cylinder.
16) What should I use instead of a Schlage 30-021 on a residential handleset or deadbolt retrofit?
Medeco builds retrofit cylinders aimed at those openings: the 1065140 5-pin retrofit cylinder for Arrow JL interconnected locks and Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinders, the 1065244 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, the 1075127 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts, and the 1012040 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts. Emtek also lists the CY4 cylinder. The Schlage 30-021 is a commercial mortise cylinder for Schlage L mortise locks, which is a different opening entirely.
17) What finishes does the Schlage 30-021 come in to match my existing lock trim?
Twelve finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, and 643E aged bronze. Match the number on your existing lock trim rather than the name, since the BHMA number is the thing that is consistent between manufacturers.
18) Is the BEST 12E dummy rim cylinder an option where I would otherwise use a Schlage 30-021?
Only where no key function is wanted. The BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder has a 1-5/32 inch diameter and is a dummy, so it fills a rim prep for appearance without operating anything. The Schlage 30-021 is a keyed 6-pin mortise cylinder supplied with 2 keys and BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001. Use the 12E to close out an unused rim prep and the 30-021 where the opening has to lock and unlock by key.
