Schlage 30-021 S123 118 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Schlage 30-021 the complete mortise lock or just the key cylinder?
Just the key cylinder, sold as a replacement part with two cut keys. The lock case, trim and latch stay on the door. So when a cylinder is worn, compromised or being rekeyed out of a lost-key situation and the rest of the mortise lock is sound, this is the only piece you buy. It suits Schlage L Series mortise locks, the L9060 exterior excepted.
2) Can a Schlage 30-021 mortise cylinder be keyed into the Schlage system already running in my building?
Order it in the keyway your system already uses. The 30-021 is offered in the Classic keyways (C, CE, E, EF, G, FG) and in Everest 29 restricted sections including C123, C125, C134, S123 and S345, and the modular platform supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems. Two keys ship with it.
3) What finishes does the Schlage 30-021 mortise cylinder come in, and will it match the lock trim already on my doors?
The front housing is built in all the finishes Schlage puts on its locks, so a cylinder-only swap does not leave one door looking different. Offered finishes are 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze.
4) Can a Schlage modular cylinder be converted from mortise to a rim or key-in-lever cylinder?
That is the whole idea behind the modular design. The 30-021 arrives configured as a mortise cylinder with the Schlage L cam, and the same cylinder body converts to rim or key-in-lever/key-in-knob by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing. For a service van it means one cylinder body plus a few housings and cams instead of three separate cylinders on the shelf.
5) My doors are thicker than standard. Does the Schlage 30-021 cylinder handle that?
Door thickness is handled by the rear housing on the Schlage modular cylinder, and six rear housing lengths are available. A thick door means fitting the longer rear housing to the same cylinder body rather than hunting for a completely different cylinder. The 30-021 is the mortise setup, cammed with the Schlage L cam L583-475.
6) Does the Schlage 30-021 mortise cylinder meet ANSI/BHMA requirements for a commercial hardware spec?
BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, and it is a commercial-duty cylinder rather than a residential one. It is offered in Basic Security and Enhanced Security configurations, so a facility standardizing on one cylinder can step the security level up on exterior and sensitive openings while keeping the same part family everywhere else.
7) I need a cylinder for a rim exit device, not a mortise lock. Will the Schlage 30-021 work?
Not as it comes. The 30-021 is set up as a mortise cylinder with the Schlage L cam, which threads into a mortise lock case. The modular body can be converted to rim by changing the tailpiece, cam and rear housing. If you would rather buy the rim part outright, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece.
8) Aluminum storefront door with an Adams Rite deadlock - is this the right mortise cylinder for it?
For an Adams Rite MS deadlock in a narrow aluminum stile, the matched part is the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder: five-pin, Grade 1, with a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is what lets it work in a thin stile. The Schlage 30-021 is built around Schlage L mortise locks less the L9060 exterior, which are hollow metal and wood door lock cases, and it carries the Schlage L cam. If the storefront needs a keyed pull rather than a cylinder alone, the Adams Rite 4024 cylinder pull mounts with a trim plate for the MS1847 deadlock/deadlatch and the 4025 is a five-pin cylinder pull with through-screws for the same MS1847; the 4026 five-pin cylinder pull is the wood door version for the Adams Rite 5017 deadlock/deadlatch.
9) What other commercial mortise cylinders take a Schlage C keyway?
Detex builds the MC65, a commercial grade 1-1/8 inch 6-pin mortise cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. The thing to check before substituting is the cam: the Schlage 30-021 carries the Schlage L cam, part L583-475, which is what an L Series mortise lock body expects, and the 30-021 is itself available in the C keyway alongside the Everest 29 sections.
10) What other 1-1/8 inch six-pin mortise cylinder is there for a commercial opening?
The Detex MC65 is the closest peer in raw dimensions: a 1-1/8 inch, 6-pin mortise cylinder in Schlage C keyway, commercial grade. The difference that decides the job is the cam. The Schlage 30-021 is supplied with the Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475, which is what a Schlage L mortise lock case expects, and it is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001 with two keys in the box. Match the cam to the lock case first and the 1-1/8 inch length second.
11) The mortise lock case on this door takes a straight cam, not a Schlage L cam. What do I order?
Go to the cylinder that ships with the cam the case wants. The Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 series mortise cylinder is 1-1/2 inch with an A02 straight cam. If the case wants a cloverleaf, the Corbin Russwin 1070 Grade 1 series is a 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with the A01 cloverleaf cam. The Schlage 30-021 is furnished with the Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475, which is the cam geometry the Schlage L mortise lock case is cut for. Cam shape is not a finish detail on a mortise cylinder - the wrong cam either will not retract the lock or will not seat at all.
12) Can I use a Corbin Russwin 3070 rim cylinder housing in place of a mortise cylinder?
No - those are two different mounting systems that happen to take the same key. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece: it mounts through the door face and drives a flat tailpiece into the back of a rim device. The Schlage 30-021 is a mortise cylinder that threads into the lock case and turns a Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475. The 30-021 is a modular cylinder, so the same core can be built into mortise, rim, or key-in-lever configurations by changing the tailpiece, cam, or rear housing - but as a mortise cylinder it is set up for the threaded mortise application, not a rim device.
13) The lock is a key-in-lever, not a mortise lock. What cylinder should I be looking at?
A key-in-lever lock takes a cylinder built for that chassis, not a threaded mortise cylinder. The Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder, RU/T series, 6-pin G keyway, keyed different, supplied with two cut keys. The Kaba Ilco 1539 series is a key-in-knob / lever universal cylinder. If the opening is a deadbolt instead, the Kaba Ilco 1549 series is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder, the 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent, and the 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder. The Schlage 30-021 is the mortise version, keyed to Schlage keyways and cammed for Schlage L mortise locks; the underlying modular cylinder is adaptable to mortise, rim, and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications by changing the housing and tailpiece.
14) Our campus standardizes on BEST interchangeable cores. How does that compare to ordering conventional Schlage cylinders?
Those are two different keying architectures, and the choice is a facility-wide one. On the BEST side, the 1C series standard 5-pin cylinder core and the 1CB Peaks 150 series interchangeable core cylinder are figure-eight cores pulled and replaced with a control key; the 1CDF is a drill resistant preferred patented interchangeable core, 7-pin, brass, in the 150 series, for openings that need a patented key. The Schlage 30-021 is a conventional 6-pin mortise cylinder that is pinned rather than swapped, BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, and it supports interchangeability between the Everest 29, Primus XP, and Classic key systems, so a Schlage-keyed facility can move an opening up to a patented Primus XP key without changing cylinder platforms.
15) The door is thicker than standard and the cylinder sits short of the face. Do I need a different cylinder or a different brand?
Length is the variable to change, not the brand. Within the Schlage modular cylinder platform, six rear housing lengths are available to accommodate thicker doors, so the 30-021 core and its Schlage L cam stay the same and the rear housing grows to suit the door. If the job is already on a Corbin Russwin lock, the 1070 Grade 1 series mortise housing is 1-1/4 inch with the A01 cloverleaf cam and the 1000 Grade 1 series mortise cylinder is 1-1/2 inch with the A02 straight cam. Measure from the face of the lock case, not the face of the door, before picking a length.
16) Half of our units have Kwikset deadbolts and Emtek handlesets. Will the same mortise cylinder cover those too?
No - those take retrofit cylinders built for the residential lock body. The Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts; the 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder; the 1065244 is a 5-pin lazy motion rim type cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece; and the 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. The Emtek CY4 is a plain replacement cylinder in the Emtek parts range. The Schlage 30-021 is the commercial mortise cylinder for the Schlage L mortise locks less L9060 exterior - use it on the corridor and common-area mortise locks, and the retrofit cylinders above on the residential-style hardware.
17) The opening only needs to look keyed - it is pull-side trim with no locking function. Is a dummy cylinder the same part?
It is not, and the two are easy to confuse on a purchase order. The BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder, 1-5/32 inch diameter, fills the hole and gives the trim its keyed appearance without operating anything. The Schlage 30-021 is a working 6-pin mortise cylinder: it is keyed, ships with two keys, and turns the Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475, to operate a Schlage L mortise lock. Order the dummy only where nothing behind the door face has to move.
