Schlage 30-021 S123 158 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage 30-021 mortise cylinder work in my Schlage L Series mortise lock?
Built for Schlage L mortise locks, and it ships with the Schlage L cam already on it, cam number L583-475. The one position it is not the cylinder for is the exterior side of an L9060. Everywhere else across the L range it is a straight cylinder swap into the existing pocket, and because the 30-021 is non-handed you order the same part whether the door swings left or right.
2) How do I get a Schlage 30-021 cylinder keyed to the Schlage keys my building already uses?
Keyway is the thing to get right on the order. The 30-021 is offered in the Classic keyways (C, CE, E, EF, FG and G) and in the Everest 29 restricted keyways, meaning the C and S number families such as C123, C135, C245, S145 and S345. Match the keyway your existing cylinders run on and the new cylinder sits on the same key system. Two cut keys come with each one.
3) A tenant lost the key to a Schlage mortise lock - do I need a whole new lock or just the cylinder?
Just the cylinder. The 30-021 is sold as a replacement part for Schlage L mortise locks, so the lock case, latch, trim and levers stay in the door and only the keyed cylinder comes out. It arrives with the Schlage L cam fitted and two cut keys, and you nominate the keyway so the replacement either runs on the same key system as the rest of your doors or deliberately does not. The one spot it will not cover is the exterior cylinder of an L9060.
4) Can a Schlage 30-021 be used as a rim cylinder or in a key-in-lever lock?
Not as delivered. It comes configured as a mortise cylinder with the Schlage L cam, L583-475, mounted. The modular platform behind it does let one cylinder body serve mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, and six rear housing lengths exist to suit thicker doors, so a locksmith carrying those parts can reconfigure it. If what you actually need is a rim cylinder for an exit device, order a rim cylinder rather than converting this one on the job.
5) What finishes does the Schlage 30-021 mortise cylinder come in, and will it match my existing lock trim?
Eleven finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. Only the front housing shows once the cylinder is in the lock, and Schlage builds that housing across the same finish range as the locks, so a 626 cylinder in a 626 mortise lock reads as one piece of hardware.
6) Is the Schlage 30-021 cylinder certified to a commercial standard?
BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, and it is a commercial cylinder rather than a residential one. Basic and enhanced security are both covered within the 30-021 range, and the cylinder supports interchangeability between the Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so a facility can hold one cylinder model while running different levels of key control on different openings.
7) Do you have an interchangeable core mortise cylinder for Schlage L9000 mortise locks?
The Corbin Russwin 1080 in the 1-1/2 inch length is the large format interchangeable core option: 6-pin, built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks, with the A01 Schlage L cam. Cores in that format come out with a control key instead of being repinned. The Schlage 30-021 is the conventional cylinder route into the same locks, carrying the Schlage L cam L583-475 and keyed on whichever Schlage keyway you specify. The choice comes down to whether your site rekeys by swapping cores or by pinning cylinders.
8) Can I put any brand of mortise cylinder into a Schlage L mortise lock?
The cam decides it, not the thread. The 30-021 carries the Schlage L cam, number L583-475, which is what the L series lock case is built around. A Corbin Russwin 1000 in the 1-1/2 inch length, by contrast, comes with an A02 straight cam, a different cam entirely. The Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial mortise cylinder cut for the Schlage C keyway, so it runs on Schlage C keys, but keyway and cam are two separate questions and both have to line up before a cylinder will operate your lock.
9) The door is an aluminum storefront with an Adams Rite deadlock. Is a Schlage mortise cylinder the right part for that opening?
That opening calls for a different cylinder. The Schlage 30-021 is built around the Schlage L cam for Schlage L mortise locks less the L9060 exterior, which is a hollow metal and wood door lock case. For a narrow stile aluminum door, the Adams Rite 4036 is a Grade 1 five-pin mortise cylinder with a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness. Where the leaf runs an MS1847 deadlock with no lever trim, the Adams Rite 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting for MS1847 deadlock systems and the 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws for the same deadlock. On a wood door version of that lock, the 4026 five pin tumbler cylinder pull is designed for the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock and deadlatch.
10) I need to replace the cylinder in a Schlage L9000 mortise lock, and I would like the option of an interchangeable core. What are my choices?
Two mortise cylinders in this class carry the Schlage L cam. The Schlage 30-021 uses the Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475, and is compatible with Schlage L mortise locks less the L9060 exterior; it is a conventional pinned mortise cylinder supplied with 2 keys. The Corbin Russwin 1080 is a 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, listed for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with the A01 Schlage L cam. The difference is the core format: the 30-021 is pinned as a cylinder, while the 1080 takes a large format interchangeable core, so a key change on that one is a core swap rather than a pinning operation.
11) A supplier offered me a Corbin Russwin 1000 mortise cylinder as a substitute. Will it drive my Schlage L mortise lock?
Check the cam first, because that is where these two part company. The Corbin Russwin 1000 is a Grade 1 series mortise cylinder supplied 1-1/2 inch with the A02 straight cam. The Schlage 30-021 carries the Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475, which is the cam a Schlage L mortise lock body is looking for. A straight cam and a Schlage L cam are shaped to engage different lock cases, so the 1000 is the right part where an A02 straight cam is specified. If you need the Schlage L cam from Corbin Russwin instead, the 1080 is listed with the A01 Schlage L cam for Schlage L9000 mortise locks.
12) The exit device on my stairwell door takes a cylinder with a long flat tailpiece rather than a threaded body. Is a Schlage 30-021 the part for that?
No. The Schlage 30-021 is a mortise cylinder with the Schlage L cam, intended for a mortise lock case. A device that wants a tailpiece takes a rim cylinder: the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece. Also worth ruling out if it turns up in a search, the BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder has a 1-5/32 inch diameter and is a dummy, so it does not operate a device at all.
13) Half my openings are mortise locks and half are lever locks. Can one cylinder cover both, and can they still be on one key?
They take different cylinder formats, but they can share a keyway. The Schlage 30-021 is a mortise cylinder with the Schlage L cam for Schlage L mortise locks less the L9060 exterior, and it is offered in G keyway among others. A lever lock takes a key-in-lever cylinder instead: the Falcon A23161-05 G is a 6-pin G keyway key-in-lever cylinder for the RU/T series, keyed different and supplied with 2 cut keys, and the Kaba Ilco 1539 is a universal key-in-knob and lever cylinder. Matching the keyway across the two formats is what puts the mortise doors and the lever doors on one system.
14) We turn tenants over constantly and want to change keys without pinning cylinders every time. What should I be looking at instead of a conventional mortise cylinder?
That is the case for an interchangeable core. The Schlage 30-021 is a conventional cylinder supplied with 2 keys, and its modular construction supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems by changing housings and cam. If you want the core itself to come out with a control key, the BEST Peaks 1CB is a 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, the BEST 1CDF is a drill resistant patented interchangeable core 7-pin brass 150 series, and the BEST 1C series standard 5-pin core is the core that drops into that family. For a Schlage L9000 mortise lock specifically, the Corbin Russwin 1080 is a 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder with the A01 Schlage L cam, which keeps the mortise format while adding a removable core.
15) Our whole building is keyed on the Schlage C keyway. Which mortise cylinders can stay on that keyway?
The Schlage 30-021 is offered in C keyway, and it carries the Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475, for Schlage L mortise locks less the L9060 exterior. If some of your openings run Detex hardware, the Detex MC65 is a mortise cylinder with the Schlage C keyway, 1-1/8 inch, 6-pin, commercial grade, so those doors stay on the same keyway family while using the cylinder length and body that device expects.
16) Our spec sheet calls for certified commercial cylinders. Which of these carry a certification or grade I can put on a submittal?
The Schlage 30-021 is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, is a commercial cylinder, and is non-handed, so one part number covers both leaves of a pair. Among the other mortise cylinders, the Corbin Russwin 1000 and the Corbin Russwin 1080 are Grade 1 series mortise cylinders, and the Adams Rite 4036 is Grade 1 with a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness. Which one belongs on the submittal follows from the lock case: the 30-021 and the 1080 are the two carrying the Schlage L cam.
17) Can I put one of the Medeco retrofit cylinders into a Schlage mortise lock instead?
Those are cut for other lock formats. The Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts, the 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, and the 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder. A Schlage L mortise lock case needs a mortise cylinder turning the Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475, which is what the 30-021 supplies along with 2 keys.
18) What is the practical difference between ordering a mortise cylinder and ordering a mortise cylinder housing?
A housing is the shell without the keyed plug assembled to it. The Corbin Russwin 1070 is a Grade 1 series 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with the A01 cloverleaf cam, so it is the piece you order when the core or plug is already accounted for. The Schlage 30-021 arrives as a keyed mortise cylinder with the Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475, and 2 keys. It is also modular, so the front and rear housing can be changed to convert between mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications, and six rear housing lengths cover thicker doors - that is the part a locksmith stocks when they want one cylinder to cover several housings rather than several finished cylinders.
