Schlage 30-022 S123 112 626 RH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Schlage 30-022 the complete lock or just the key cylinder?
Just the keyed cylinder. It is the threaded barrel that carries the keyway and drives the cam on a mortise lock, sold as a replacement part, so no lock case, latch, lever or rose comes with it. Two keys are included. If the lock body itself is worn or the door prep is damaged, a new cylinder will not fix that.
2) Can I use a Schlage 30-022 mortise cylinder in a rim exit device?
Not as it ships. The 30-022 is built as a mortise cylinder with a Schlage L cam, which is what threads into a mortise lock case. A rim device wants a rim cylinder driving a tailpiece, not a cam. The Schlage modular design does convert between mortise, rim and key-in-lever by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, so a locksmith stocking the components can reconfigure one on the bench. If you want a part that arrives ready for the exit device, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece.
3) Is a 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder long enough for my door, or do I need a longer one?
For a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door with a standard mortise lock, 1-1/2 inches is the normal cylinder length. Thicker doors are where it changes, and the Schlage modular cylinder handles those with six available rear housing lengths, so going longer is a housing change rather than a different cylinder line. Going the other direction, if a 1-1/2 inch cylinder stands proud of the trim, the Corbin Russwin 1070 housing is 1-1/4 inches and the Detex MC65 is 1-1/8 inches.
4) Can a Schlage 30-022 cylinder be keyed onto the master key system already running in my building?
Keyway decides it, and keyway is an order option on the 30-022. It is offered in the Classic C keyway, in multi-section C keyways from C123 through C345, in S keyways from S124 through S345, and in E, EF and CE. The Schlage modular cylinder supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so pick the keyway the building is already on and the cylinder can be brought onto that system.
5) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Schlage 30-022 mortise cylinder?
Three things get specified on the 30-022: finish, keyway, and hand, right or left. Have all three settled before the order goes in, the hand of the door, the keyway the building is on, and the finish of the surrounding trim.
6) I am replacing cylinders across a building with oil rubbed bronze trim, will these match?
Finish is an order option on the 30-022 and the front housing is available in all finishes to match the locks. Oil rubbed bronze 613 is among them, along with 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. On a building with mixed trim, order per opening rather than one finish for the whole run, since the cylinder face sits in plain view next to the lever.
7) Will this Schlage mortise cylinder work on an aluminum storefront door with an Adams Rite deadlatch?
Wrong family for that opening. The 30-022 is cammed and sized for a Schlage mortise lock case, not for the narrow stile hardware in an aluminum storefront door. Adams Rite's own 4036 mortise cylinder is the part built for those doors, Grade 1, with a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is the thin section a storefront stile gives you. If the door takes a cylinder pull rather than a mortise cylinder, the Adams Rite 4025 is made for the MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch.
8) Our facility is standardized on interchangeable core, is there an IC version of this mortise cylinder?
The 30-022 is a conventional cylinder, meaning the whole cylinder comes out of the lock to be rekeyed. Where a facility runs interchangeable core, the Corbin Russwin 1080 Series is the closer match: a 1-1/2 inch large format IC mortise cylinder, six-pin, with the A01 Schlage L cam for Schlage L9000 mortise locks, so it takes the same lock prep and the same cam while letting a core be pulled with a control key. For small format core programs, BEST 1C Series standard cores and the 1CB Peaks core are the other route.
9) Is the Schlage 30-022 cylinder certified to an ANSI standard I can put on a submittal?
BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, which is the ANSI/BHMA standard covering cylinders and input devices for locks, and it is a commercial product rather than a residential one. That certification is the cylinder's own, so on a fire door or a rated opening the lock case and exit device carry their own listings separately.
10) How does the Schlage 30-022 mortise cylinder differ from the Corbin Russwin 1000 series 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder?
Both are mortise cylinders that thread into a mortise lock case, and the difference that decides the order is the cam. The Corbin Russwin 1000 in 1-1/2 inch length carries an A02 straight cam. The Schlage 30-022 carries the Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475, which is the cam Schlage mortise lock bodies are built to receive. The cam is what actually retracts the lock, so pull the existing cylinder and match the cam profile before you match anything else. The 30-022 is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001.
11) We run interchangeable core across the property. Is there a Schlage L cam mortise cylinder that takes a large format core instead of a conventional keyed cylinder?
Yes. The Corbin Russwin 1080 in 1-1/2 inch length is a 6-pin LFIC mortise cylinder built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam, so the core can be pulled and swapped with a control key. The Schlage 30-022 is a conventional keyed mortise cylinder with the Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475, and it ships with 2 keys. Choose the 1080 route if the site is standardized on removable cores; choose the 30-022 if the openings are keyed conventionally and you are matching an existing Schlage key system.
12) The opening is a narrow stile aluminum storefront door with a deadlock. Is a Schlage L cam mortise cylinder the right part for that?
Not usually. A narrow stile aluminum deadlock takes a cylinder sized for the stile, and the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder is the one built for that job: five-pin security, Grade 1, with a door thickness range starting at a 1/2 inch minimum. The Schlage 30-022 is a mortise cylinder with the Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475, which is the cam a Schlage mortise lock body expects, not what an Adams Rite deadlock is prepped for. Confirm the lock case brand and the cam it drives before ordering either one.
13) Can a rim cylinder be used in place of a mortise cylinder on the same door?
No, they are different parts even though both are keyed cylinders. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing that drives a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece through the door into a rim device. The Schlage 30-022 is a mortise cylinder that threads into the lock case and turns the Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475, with no tailpiece involved. Worth knowing on the Schlage side: one modular cylinder converts to three different cylinder types by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, covering mortise, rim and key-in-lever applications, so the change from mortise to rim is a parts change rather than a whole different cylinder.
14) The lock on the door is a lever set, not a mortise lock. Which cylinder replaces that one?
A key-in-lever or key-in-knob cylinder, not a mortise cylinder. The Kaba Ilco 1539 is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, and the Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder in the RU/T series with a 6-pin G keyway, keyed different, supplied with 2 cut keys. The Schlage 30-022 is a mortise cylinder with the Schlage L cam and belongs in a mortise lock case. Look at the back of the removed lock: a mortise cylinder unscrews from the lock case face, while a key-in-lever cylinder comes out with the lever or knob.
15) We want one key system across the whole facility and the ability to rekey openings in house. What are the options next to a conventional Schlage mortise cylinder?
There are two approaches. Interchangeable core keeps the housings in the doors and moves the keying into a removable core: the BEST 1C is a standard 5-pin cylinder core, the BEST Peaks 1CB is a 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, and the BEST 1CDF is a drill resistant preferred patented interchangeable core in 7-pin brass. The conventional approach keys at the cylinder itself, which is where the Schlage 30-022 sits: it supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, and ships with 2 keys. If the facility already has a Schlage key system on file, staying inside the Schlage keyways keeps one key hierarchy across the site.
16) I need a mortise cylinder in the Schlage C keyway for an exit device. What is the difference between the Detex MC65 and the Schlage 30-022?
The Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial grade mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway, so it drops into Detex hardware while still keying to a Schlage C system. The Schlage 30-022 is also offered in the C keyway and carries the Schlage L cam, cam number L583-475. Length and cam are what separate them: match the cylinder length to the door and trim thickness, and match the cam to the lock or device the cylinder has to operate.
17) The unit entry has a deadbolt and a handleset, not a mortise lock. Is this the cylinder for that, or is there a better match?
A deadbolt or handleset takes a rim type cylinder rather than a mortise cylinder. The Medeco 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts, the Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, and the Medeco 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder. The Schlage 30-022 is a commercial mortise cylinder with the Schlage L cam, which belongs in a mortise lock case. Identify the lock the cylinder came out of first, then order to that family.
18) One leaf of the pair does not need to lock but has to look identical to the keyed side. Is a keyed cylinder still the part to buy?
No, that opening calls for a dummy cylinder. The BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder has a 1-5/32 inch diameter and fills the prep with no key function behind it. The Schlage 30-022 is a keyed mortise cylinder with the Schlage L cam that ships with 2 keys, so it is the wrong part for a leaf that only needs to match visually. Where both leaves are keyed and the appearance has to match across the pair, ordering the same finish on both is what keeps them looking alike.
