Schlage 48-003-C123 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does the Schlage 48-003 control key do, and will it open a door?
It is a control key, not an operating key. A control key turns the control lug in a full size interchangeable core so the core can be pulled out of the housing and a replacement dropped in. It does not retract a latch or throw a deadbolt, so it will not open anything on its own. The 48-003 is supplied cut for the Everest system, in keyway S123 or S145.
2) Do I order the S123 or the S145 Everest control key for my Schlage cores?
Match it to the keyway your cores are already on. The 48-003 control key is offered in Everest S123 and Everest S145, and a control key only enters and turns the control lug of a core cut to its own keyway. The wrong one will not go into the plug at all. Check the keyway your existing Schlage system was keyed to before ordering, and order the same one for every building on that system so one control key covers the whole site.
3) With a Schlage Everest control key, can my maintenance staff rekey units themselves?
Core swaps, yes. Turn the control key in the cylinder, the core comes out in your hand, a new core goes in the same way, and the lockset never leaves the door. That is the whole point of a full size interchangeable core system and why a turnover in one unit does not become a locksmith call. What the 48-003 does not do is cut keys or change the pinning inside a core, so you need replacement cores keyed to your system on hand before anyone starts pulling them.
4) Will a Schlage 48-003 control key work on the Schlage locks in a house or apartment?
No, and it is worth being clear about why. The 48-003 is commercial hardware built for full size interchangeable core cylinders. Standard residential Schlage knobs, levers and deadbolts use fixed cylinders with no control lug, so there is nothing in them for a control key to turn. If the cores in your doors do not lift out as a unit, this is not the key you need.
5) Does the DO NOT DUPLICATE marking on the Schlage 48-003 stop someone copying the key?
The wording is embossed into the key itself, so it travels with the key rather than sitting on a tag that falls off. Treat it as an instruction to whoever is standing at the duplicating machine, not as a mechanical block. On a control key the real control is custody: whoever holds it can pull every core on the system, so it belongs in a locked cabinet or a signed-out kit, not on a maintenance ring with the unit keys.
