It pulls cores, it does not run locks. The 48-269 is the control key for Schlage full size interchangeable cores: turned in the core, it retracts the control lug so the core lifts straight out of the housing without taking the lever, knob or mortise body apart. It will not retract a latch or throw a bolt, so it is no substitute for an operating or master key. Keep it off the general maintenance ring; the DO NOT DUPLICATE embossing on the bow is there so nobody confuses it with a change key.

No, and this is the most common mix-up on control keys. The 48-269 is cut for full size (large format) Schlage interchangeable cores. Small format cores, the small figure-eight shaped ones, are a separate system with their own control key and their own control lug geometry. If the cores coming out of your doors are the little figure-eight type, this key will do nothing for you. Match the key to the core format first, then the keyway.

Only if those cores are Everest cores in the S123 section. The key is cut on the S123 Everest keyway, and an Everest blade carries the undercut that lifts the check pin inside an Everest core, which is why a Classic key will not operate an Everest core and why an Everest key from a different section will not enter yours. On top of the keyway, the cut has to match the control combination your system was set up on. Everest but a different section, or Everest S123 from another building, and it will not turn.

That is the whole point of a control key. With the 48-269 a tech pulls the full size interchangeable core out of the lock in seconds and drops in a pre-combinated replacement, so a move-out or a lost key gets handled at the door, no lockset disassembly and nothing sent out. What it does not do is cut keys or repin cores, so you still need a stock of spare cores combinated to your Everest S123 system. The key is non-handed, so door swing and lock type make no difference to it.

Both, and it is the same motion. The control lug has to be held retracted to seat a full size interchangeable core as well as to withdraw one, so the 48-269 goes into the new core, the core slides into the housing, and rotating the key back drops the lug into its retaining groove. If a core sits loose in a housing and will not stay put, that is almost always a lug that never rotated home rather than a faulty core.

The embossing is a deterrent, not a barrier. The real key control here comes from the keyway: Everest is a restricted, factory-controlled section, so the blanks are not sitting in a corner-store duplicator the way a Classic blank is. Read the embossed bow as the reminder for staff and the Everest section as the actual protection. Worth saying plainly, a control key is the highest-value key in a facility because whoever holds it can walk cores out of doors, so it belongs signed out and logged, not on the shop ring.

It ships cut, not as a blank, on the S123 Everest section. Two things still have to line up before it works on your openings: the cores have to be Everest S123, and the cut has to match the control combination the system was keyed to. Every standard bow looks identical on a ring, so a control key from another site or another section reads as the same key and will not turn a single core. Tag it the day it arrives.
