Schlage 48-056-C – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does a Schlage 48-056 control key actually do, and will it unlock the door?
It will not operate the lock. The 48-056 is a control key, and its only job is to retract the retaining lug on a full size interchangeable core so the core pulls out of the housing and a new one drops in. Turn it in an installed core and the door stays locked. Day to day access still runs off the operating or master key. Core swaps are the whole point of an interchangeable core system: a tenant turnover or a lost key becomes a thirty second job at the door instead of pulling the cylinder and repinning it on a bench.
2) Which keyway do I order a Schlage 48-056 control key in?
Match it to the cores you are servicing. The 48-056 is offered in C, CE, E, EF, F, FG and G, plus a 1-bitted C. A control key only enters a core cut to its own keyway section, so a C control key does nothing on an E keyed core no matter how the bitting is cut. The keyway letter is stamped on the bow of the operating key you already carry for those doors. Read it off that before you order.
3) Will the Schlage 48-056 control key pull a small format interchangeable core (Best style SFIC)?
No. Full size core only. The 48-056 is made for Schlage full size interchangeable cores, and small format cores, the Best pattern SFIC that a lot of institutional hardware is prepped for, take their own control key. This one will not enter or turn one. Pull a core and look at it before ordering: if what comes out is small format, this is the wrong part and you need an SFIC control key instead.
4) Will a Classic cut Schlage control key work on Everest cores?
No, Classic and Everest are separate systems. The 48-056 is a Classic cut key. Everest cylinders carry a check pin that only an Everest key with the undercut side bitting will lift, so a Classic key will not turn one. Everest cores need an Everest control key. If a building has been re-cored at some point, it is common to find both families on the same property, which is why it is worth confirming what is in the door rather than what was originally specified.
5) Is the Schlage 48-056 control key for commercial locks, or does it work on residential Schlage knobs and deadbolts?
Commercial hardware. The 48-056 serves Schlage commercial locks fitted with full size interchangeable cores, which is the setup that lets maintenance swap a core in seconds instead of pulling and repinning a cylinder. Residential Schlage knobs and deadbolts off a retail shelf do not use interchangeable cores at all, so a control key has nothing to act on there. If your doors are standard residential cylinders, rekeying is the route, not a control key.
6) What is the 1-bitted version of the Schlage 48-056 control key for?
The 1-bitted C is cut to a single depth across every position rather than to a keying system. It goes with 1-bitted cores, the ones supplied unkeyed for a locksmith or an in-house shop to pin to the building's own system. Order it if you are keying your own cores. If the cores you are servicing are already keyed into an established system, the 1-bitted key is not the one you want, and the standard C applies.
7) How do I keep a Schlage control key from getting mixed in with the operating keys on a maintenance ring?
The bow is the tell. The 48-056 has a standard bow that is embossed, which is what separates it by feel and sight from the plain operating keys sitting beside it in a shop. Worth being deliberate about: whoever holds a control key can remove cores from your doors, which is a wider exposure than a misplaced operating key. Most facilities keep it in the shop or a keyed cabinet rather than on a route ring that goes out with a tech every day.
