Schlage 35056CE – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage 35-056 control key actually do, and do I still need an operating key?
The 35-056 is a control key blank for Schlage full size interchangeable cores. A cut control key rotates the core's control lug so you can pull the core out of the housing and drop a new one in. It does not throw the latch or bolt, so it is not a substitute for the operating key that runs the lock day to day. Keep both: the control key for core swaps, the change key for entry.
2) Will a Schlage 35-056 control key work on my Everest or Primus cores?
No. The 35-056 works with Schlage Classic family standard interchangeable cores only, and it will not operate Schlage Everest or Primus cores. Everest keyways carry an undercut side milling that a Classic blank will not pass, so if the cores in your building are Everest or Primus you need the control key blank made for that family instead.
3) Which Schlage keyway do I order for a control key blank?
Nine Classic keyways are offered on the 35-056: C, CE, E, EF, F, FG, G, H and S. The blank has to match the keyway stamped on the cores you are pulling, not the keyway of your entry keys if those differ. Check the face of an existing core or your keying schedule before you pick, since a C blank will not enter an F keyway.
4) I have the key code for our control key. Can I order the Schlage blank cut to it?
Yes, there is a key code field on the order so you can supply your existing control code and have the blank cut to it rather than receiving it uncut. Give the code exactly as it appears on your keying schedule, along with the matching keyway. Without a code, the blank arrives 1-bitted for your locksmith to cut.
5) I manage a building with a lot of FSIC cores. Should I order these keyed alike or keyed different?
Keyed alike is the usual call for a facility. One control bitting across your Schlage Classic cores means one key pulls any core in the building, which is the whole point of running interchangeable cores in the first place. Keyed different makes sense when you are deliberately splitting control between buildings, tenants, or departments so a site manager cannot pull cores outside their area. Both options are on the order form, and keyed different is the standard setting.
6) Can I use a Schlage control key to rekey a door instead of pinning the cylinder?
That is exactly the workflow it enables. With a full size interchangeable core, you pull the core with the control key and install a fresh one instead of taking the lock apart and repinning a cylinder. Turnover on an apartment or a lost master key becomes a thirty second swap at the door, done by maintenance rather than a locksmith call. You do need spare cores on hand, plus the operating keys for them.
7) Is this Schlage control key blank for commercial locks or will it fit residential Schlage locks?
It is a commercial part. Full size interchangeable core is a commercial keying platform, and the 35-056 only has a job where FSIC cores are installed in the lock or housing. Residential Schlage knobs and deadbolts use conventional fixed cylinders, so there is no core to pull and no control keyway for this blank to enter.
8) Does the 35-056 control key have a handing, or does it work on left and right hand doors?
Non-handed. A control key operates the core, not the door, so the same key works regardless of which way the door swings or which side the hinges are on. Order by keyway, not by hand.
