Schlage 48-056 ICC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can one Schlage 48-056 control key pull every construction core in my building?
Only if the cores share a control code and a core family. Order keyed alike if you want a single control key across multiple locks; keyed different is the standard and gives separate codes. And the key has to match the core type, an ICA control key won't service ICB, ICC or ICX cores, so a building mixing families needs a control key per family.
2) Does the Schlage 48-056 come cut, or do I have to have it cut locally?
It ships cut. The 48-056 is a cut control key, embossed on both sides, so it arrives ready to pull cores. You do need to give the key code at order time and choose keyed different or keyed alike so it matches the construction cores going into your building.
3) Do I have to specify a key code when ordering a Schlage construction control key?
Yes, and it's the detail that decides whether the key works. Ordering asks for keying, keyed different (the standard), keyed alike where several locks share one key, or none, plus a key code field. A control key cut to a different code than the cores on your job will not turn them, so pull the code off the core or the existing keying schedule before ordering.
4) Is the Schlage 48-056 control key a key that opens the lock, or something else?
It isn't an operating key. The 48-056 pulls the core; a change key or master key throws the bolt. On a construction keying program you want both, the operating keys the trades carry during the build and this control key held by whoever does the core swap at handover.
5) I manage a building and lost the control key for my Schlage construction cores. Is this a replacement?
That's exactly what it is. The 48-056 is sold as a replacement part for commercial Schlage interchangeable construction core keying, so a lost or worn control key can be reordered against the same core family and key code you already have on the property.
6) Why is the Schlage 48-056 control key embossed on both sides?
The stamping on both faces is so a control key can be told apart from the operating keys floating around a jobsite. Grab the wrong key at turnover and you're trying to pull a core with a change key. Embossing on both faces means it reads the same whichever way it comes out of a pocket or off a ring.
