1) Will the Schlage 80-101 SFIC mortise housing fit my Schlage L series mortise lock?
It's built for Schlage L mortise locks, with one exception: the exterior side of the L9060. Every other L series case in the building takes it. The housing is non-handed, so the same part goes into a left hand or right hand lock and there is nothing to specify on the order form for door swing. Handing is set by the lock case, not by the cylinder.
2) I need a cylinder for the outside of a Schlage L9060. Is the 80-101 the right part?
No. The 80-101 mortise housing is specified for Schlage L mortise locks less the L9060 exterior, so the outside of an L9060 needs a different cylinder. It still covers the rest of your L series openings, so it is fine to standardize on the 80-101 everywhere else and handle that one leaf separately.
3) Does the Schlage 80-101 come with a core, or do I buy the interchangeable core separately?
What ships is the housing itself, the shell with its compression ring, spring and a 1/4 inch blocking ring. Small format interchangeable core housings are supplied without a core, so add an SFIC core in your keyway to finish the cylinder. If the building is already keyed on small format cores, pull one off the shelf and drop it in; if you are starting fresh, we stock cores such as the BEST 1C Series 5-pin.
4) Do I need spacer rings to set a Schlage mortise cylinder flush with the trim, or do they come with the 80-101?
They come with it. A 1/4 inch blocking ring ships with the 80-101 along with the compression ring and spring. The blocking ring takes up depth behind the cylinder so the face sits correctly through the escutcheon or armor front instead of standing proud or sitting below the surface, and the compression ring and spring hold it tight against the trim once it is threaded in. Nothing extra to source for the depth adjustment.
5) Does the Schlage 80-101 housing lock me into a particular keyway or key system?
Keying lives in the core, not the housing. The 80-101 is the shell with its cam, compression ring, spring and blocking ring; whatever keyway your small format cores are cut to is what the opening is keyed to. Rekeying a unit later is a core swap with a control key, not pulling the cylinder out of the door, which is the reason facilities put SFIC on their mortise locks in the first place.
6) I need the mortise cylinder to match the Schlage lever trim already on our doors. What finishes is the 80-101 available in?
Eleven: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. Match the BHMA number stamped on your existing trim rather than the finish name. Satin chrome and satin nickel look close on a door but they are 626 and 619, and a mismatch shows up on a cylinder face sitting in the middle of the escutcheon.
7) Is there an antimicrobial finish option for a healthcare facility standardizing its mortise cylinders?
626AM, satin chrome antimicrobial, is one of the finish choices on the 80-101, and plain 626 satin chrome is offered alongside it. Both read as satin chrome on the door, so patient contact openings can take the AM housings while the rest of the facility stays on standard 626 with no visual break in the hardware. The housing substrate is stainless steel and the part is specified as commercial hardware.
8) What separates the Schlage 80-101 from the Corbin Russwin 1070 and 1080 when I am writing the order?
Three fields do the work: length, cam callout and core format. Model 80-101 is the Schlage SFIC mortise housing and shell, non-handed, supplied with compression ring, spring and 1/4 inch blocking ring. The Corbin Russwin 1070-114-A01 is a Grade 1 series 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam. The Corbin Russwin 1080-112-A01 is a Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, with the A01 cam called out for Schlage L9000 mortise locks. Two of the three carry an A01 cam and still are not the same part, so read the core format and the length before you commit the line.
9) We don't run interchangeable cores. Is there a conventional keyed mortise cylinder to use instead of the 80-101?
The 80-101 only pays off if you keep SFIC cores on hand, since the housing arrives without one. For a fixed-core cylinder, the Detex MC65 is a six-pin commercial mortise cylinder in the Schlage C keyway at 1-1/8 inches. Corbin Russwin's 1000 Series 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder is another, though it carries an A02 straight cam, and the cam has to match what your lock case is expecting before length or keyway matters.
10) Will the Schlage 80-101 work in an aluminum storefront door deadlock?
Not on a storefront leaf. The 80-101 is a mortise housing specified for Schlage L series mortise locks, the cases used in hollow metal and wood commercial doors. Narrow stile aluminum hardware takes its own cylinder: the Adams Rite 4036 is the Grade 1 mortise cylinder for that work, with a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness. If the opening is glass front aluminum, order the Adams Rite and save yourself the return.
11) We're moving 40 doors onto interchangeable cores. Can we do that on our existing Schlage mortise locks with the 80-101?
That's the job it does. One 80-101 housing goes into each Schlage L series mortise lock, then the building gets keyed with small format cores. After that, turning over a unit or a tenant space is pulling one core with a control key instead of taking the cylinder out of the door, and a maintenance tech can do it in seconds without a locksmith call. The housings are stainless steel and specified as commercial, and they are non-handed, so you order by finish and quantity, not by door swing.
12) We do not run interchangeable core in this building. What mortise cylinder options are there besides the Schlage 80-101 SFIC housing?
The 80-101 is the SFIC housing and shell route, and the Schlage modular cylinder family it belongs to supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems. Where the building is keyed conventionally instead, the Detex MC65 is a 6-pin commercial grade mortise cylinder, 1-1/8 inch, in the Schlage C keyway. The Corbin Russwin 1000-112 is a Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder with an A02 straight cam. Match the cam callout to the lock body you are servicing first, then match the keyway to the system the building is already keyed on.
13) Can a rim cylinder housing be used where a Schlage 80-101 mortise housing goes?
No, and the difference is what the cylinder drives. The 80-101 is a mortise lock part, fitted to Schlage L mortise locks other than the L9060 exterior. The Corbin Russwin 3070-178 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing built around a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, which is what a rim device expects rather than a mortise lock body. The BEST 12E series unit, 1-5/32 inch diameter, is further away again: it is a dummy rim cylinder, so there is no keyed function behind it. Confirm the lock on the door is mortise before any of these reaches the order.
14) Is a BEST interchangeable core the same thing as a Schlage 80-101, or are they two different parts?
Two different parts that meet in the same opening. The 80-101 is the SFIC housing and shell, supplied with the compression ring, spring and 1/4 inch blocking ring, and it is the side fitted to Schlage L mortise locks other than the L9060 exterior. The BEST 1C is a standard 5-pin cylinder core, the BEST 1CB Peaks is a 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, and the BEST 1CDF is a drill resistant patented 7-pin brass interchangeable core in the 150 series. Those carry the keying. Ordering a core when the housing is what you are replacing, or the reverse, leaves the opening unfinished either way.
15) Our aluminum storefront doors run Adams Rite deadlocks. Is the Schlage 80-101 the cylinder for those openings?
It is not the match there. The 80-101 is fitted to Schlage L mortise locks other than the L9060 exterior. On Adams Rite hardware, the 4036 is a Grade 1 mortise cylinder in the 4036 series with a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is what makes it workable in a narrow aluminum stile. For cylinder pulls, the 4024 mounts with a trim plate and the 4025 uses through-screws, both designed for the Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch, while the 4026 five pin cylinder pull is designed for the 5017 wood door deadlock. Identify the deadlock model on the door and the cylinder or pull follows from it.
16) Half our doors are knob and lever locks rather than mortise. Does the 80-101 cover those as well?
It does not reach them. The 80-101 is a mortise lock part fitted to Schlage L mortise locks other than the L9060 exterior, so a knob or lever opening takes a different cylinder entirely. The Kaba Ilco 1539 is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, the 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder, and the 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent. The Falcon A23161-05 G is a key in lever cylinder, RU/T series with a 6-pin G keyway, keyed different and supplied with two cut keys. Deadbolts are separate again, served by the Kaba Ilco 1549 key-in-deadbolt cylinder. Count the doors by lock type before a mixed building goes on one order.
17) Someone offered a Medeco rim cylinder as a swap for the 80-101. Is that a like for like part?
It is not the same application. The 80-101 is a commercial SFIC mortise housing for Schlage L mortise locks other than the L9060 exterior. The Medeco 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts, the 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, and the 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder. Those are tailpiece driven cylinders sized to handleset and deadbolt hardware, which is a different opening from a Schlage L mortise lock.
