The ALXC chassis kit ships with the chassis, the inside spring cage, a Rhodes rose, and a 47267101 ANSI strike. That is the core of the lock, not the whole lock. Because the ALX Series is modular and built on a single chassis, you still add the function kit and the lever kit to end up with a working lockset. If you would rather not assemble it, Schlage also sells ALX as a complete configured lock ready to install.
2) Can I change the function of an existing Schlage ALX lockset instead of replacing the whole lock?
That is the point of the modular ALX design. The chassis, function, and lever are separate packaged kits built on one common chassis, so an office lock can become a classroom or storeroom lock by swapping the function kit rather than pulling and rebuying the entire lockset. For a property manager running a building of ALX openings, that means stocking a few kits instead of a bin of complete locks.
3) Do I have to order a left hand or right hand version of the Schlage ALX chassis?
No handing to specify. The ALX chassis is reversible, so one part number covers left and right hand openings and you can handle it at the door. For a locksmith carrying stock on the truck, that is one SKU per finish instead of two.
4) Is the Schlage ALX Series strong enough for a commercial office or government building?
ALX is certified Grade 2 and passed more than 400,000 operating cycles without failure. Schlage lists it for government, office, retail, and similar commercial use. For a high-traffic main entrance or a 24-hour institutional opening, a Grade 1 cylindrical or mortise lock is the heavier specification; ALX suits offices, back-of-house, and tenant doors where Grade 2 is what the spec calls for.
5) What finishes does the Schlage ALX chassis kit with Rhodes rose come in?
Nine finishes, and they are the standard BHMA numbers so they match the rest of the hardware on the opening: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and 643E aged bronze. If you are matching existing Schlage trim in a building, 626 satin chrome and 613 oil rubbed bronze are the two that most commonly turn up on installed commercial openings.
6) Does the ALX chassis kit include a strike, or do I need to buy one separately?
A 47267101 ANSI strike is in the box. That is the full-lip ANSI strike that drops into a standard 4-7/8 inch ANSI prep frame, so on a commercial hollow metal frame already cut for ANSI you are not sourcing a strike separately. On a wood frame cut for a small T-strike, the frame prep will not match.
7) My Schlage ALX lever spins loose but the lock still keys fine. Do I need a whole new lockset?
Usually not. The chassis and inside spring cage are what carry the lever return and the mechanical action, and both are in this kit as replacement parts. Swapping the chassis kit restores the action and reuses the existing levers and cylinder, which keeps the keying in place across a building where every door is on the same system.
8) What is the Rhodes rose in the Schlage ALX kit made of?
