1) What does the RX module do in a Schlage L Series mortise lock?
RX stands for request-to-exit. It's a switch module that goes inside the L Series mortise lock case and signals the access control system when the inside lever is turned, so egress is recognized and the alarm or door position logic is not tripped. Schlage lists RX alongside DPS, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor as monitoring options on the L Series electrified locks.
2) Is this a complete mortise lock or just a replacement part?
It's a replacement part, not a lock. These are RX switch modules that install into a Schlage L Series mortise lock case, sold as a 10 pack. You still need the L Series mortise lock body, trim, and cylinder for a complete opening.
3) Does the RX module need to be ordered handed for a left or right hand door?
No handed version to pick. The L Series RX module is field reversible, so the same part works on left hand, left hand reverse, right hand and right hand reverse openings.
4) Will adding an RX module to my Schlage L Series lock affect its Grade 1 rating or fire label?
The RX module is a Schlage Grade 1 L Series component, and the L9000 mortise locks it goes into are tested under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 security and operational and UL listed for 3 hour fire doors (except L9076 and L9077). Using the manufacturer's own RX module keeps you inside that listing, which is exactly why a third party switch kit is the wrong move on a labeled door.
5) Why would I buy RX modules in a 10 pack?
Quantity of 10 suits standardizing a building or a school wing on request-to-exit monitoring, or stocking a service truck and MRO crib. Since the module is a field-installable part in the L Series lock case, a locksmith can add RX to existing L Series mortise locks opening by opening rather than swapping whole lock bodies.
6) Is RX the same thing as a door position switch?
Different signal. RX reports that the inside lever was operated, meaning someone is leaving. DPS reports whether the door leaf is open or closed. Schlage lists them as separate L Series options, and on monitored openings integrators often specify both plus latchbolt or deadbolt monitoring.
7) Which Schlage lock function do these RX modules go with?
They are supplied under the L283 module program, with the L283-452 option covering the RX switch for L Series mortise lock cases. Confirm the base lock is an L Series mortise body before installing.
8) Do I need to key or order a cylinder with the RX module?
No. The RX module is non-keyed, with no cylinder or keyway to specify. Keying decisions stay with the lock's cylinder, which is ordered separately.
9) Are these RX modules suitable for residential locks?
No. This is commercial door hardware for Schlage L Series mortise locks, the kind of opening found in schools, healthcare and multi-family corridors. Residential tubular and bored locks don't take a mortise case module.
