1) What does ANSI F75 passage function actually do on a door?
F75 means latching only, no locking. Turn either knob and the springlatch retracts. There is no cylinder, no button, no thumbturn, so the door can never be secured with it. That makes it right for corridor doors, closets, storage rooms and stairwell pass-throughs where you want a latched door that anybody can open from either side. If you need the room to lock, this is the wrong function.
2) What is a comparable Grade 1 passage knob if I need a different brand?
The Corbin Russwin CK4310 is the closest cross-brand equivalent, a Grade 1 non-keyed passage/closet cylindrical lock with a Global knob and a 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch door thickness range. Falcon's X101 is another Grade 1 heavy duty passage knobset, listed with a 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch range and an interchangeable core prep, which matters if your facility is standardized on IC cores.
3) I need a knob for a bedroom or bathroom door - is the Schlage D10S the right one?
No. The D10S is a passage function knob with both knobs always unlocked, so it has no privacy button. For a bed or bath door use a privacy function knob such as the Dexter C2000 Series Grade 2 privacy ball knob, the Cal-Royal BER20 Grade 3 privacy knob, or the Pamex FTF Grade 3 Baron privacy knobset. The Dexter, Cal-Royal and Pamex privacy units are all listed for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors.
4) Does a passage knob need to be handed, or is it reversible?
No handing decision to make. The D10S is field reversible, and since a passage function has no keyway or locking at all (both knobs stay unlocked at all times), it works on a left or right hand door without any parts change.
5) Is the Schlage D10S built well enough for high-traffic commercial corridors?
It is a Grade 1, heavy duty commercial cylindrical lock. The chassis is steel with zinc dichromate plating for corrosion resistance, the latch bolt is brass, and exposed trim is wrought brass, bronze or stainless steel. That is the specification property managers and MRO buyers standardize on for school corridors, apartment common areas and hospital back-of-house, rather than a residential Grade 3 knob.
6) I need the same Plymouth knob but with a lock on it. What do I order?
The D10S is passage only and takes no cylinder, so it cannot be converted. Within Schlage's own commercial D Series the function changes with the model number rather than the knob style, so the Plymouth design carries across to keyed and privacy functions. For a Grade 1 knob that locks, the BEST 8K Series entrance function single cylinder heavy duty knob lock and the Sargent 8XG04 Grade 1 storeroom knob with a 2-3/4 inch backset are both cross-brand options at the same grade.
7) Can I get this passage knob with a request-to-exit switch for an access control system?
The D10 passage function is also offered with a Request to Exit (RX) option, which signals the access control panel when the inside knob is turned. The knob itself is a mechanical, non-electronic lock, so the RX is a monitoring switch in the chassis rather than an electrified lock function. It has to be specified when ordering.
