Used when installing electric exit devices or electrified locks, armored door cords provide a simple and economical solution for transferring power from frame to door. Schlage flexible door cords are offered in two lengths each with options for less wires or including four, 20 gauge conductor wires (red, green, white and black).

1) How do I get power from the frame to the door for an electrified exit device or electric lock?
An armored door cord like the Schlage Electronics 798 is the simple way to do it. It's a flexible armored loop that carries wiring across the gap from frame to door so an electric exit device or electrified lock stays energized as the door swings. It comes in 12 inch and 18 inch lengths. The alternative is an electric power transfer hinge or a concealed EPT mortised into the door edge and frame, which hides the wiring but takes routing and prep. The cord takes no mortising.
2) Should I order the 12 inch or the 18 inch armored door cord?
The swing decides it. On the Schlage flexible armored cord, the 12 inch is the inswinging application and the 18 inch is the outswinging one, because an outswing door pulls the loop further from the frame and needs the extra slack. Both are 1/2 inch outside diameter.
3) How many wires can I run through a Schlage armored door cord?
The 3/8 inch inside diameter sets the limit. Acceptable combinations are five 18 gauge, or two 18 gauge plus four 20 gauge, or two 18 gauge plus seven 22 gauge, or seven 20 gauge, or twelve 22 gauge. If you're running a latch retraction motor plus a monitoring circuit, count your conductors against that list before you pull.
4) Does the armored door cord come with wire already in it, or do I pull my own?
Both ways exist. The 798-12 and 788-18 ship less wires, so you pull your own conductors. The 788C-12 comes with four 20 gauge conductors 20 inches long, and the 788C-18 with four 20 gauge conductors 26 inches long, in red, green, white and black. If you already know your circuit is four conductors of 20 gauge, the prewired version saves the pull.
5) Can I use an armored door cord on a fire rated opening?
The Schlage flexible armored door cord is listed to ANSI/UL 10C and CAN/ULC-S104-15, the fire door test standards, so it is a listed component for fire door assemblies in the US and Canada. That's the line item an institutional or MRO reviewer looks for when the power transfer sits on a rated opening.
6) What size hole do I need to drill for a 1/2 inch armored door cord?
The armor loop is 1/2 inch outside diameter with a 3/8 inch inside diameter clear for wire. Your through-holes in the door edge and frame have to pass the 1/2 inch armor, not just the wire, so size the prep to the outside diameter and keep the loop's natural bend radius clear of the hinge side.
