1) Can I add a mag stripe card reader to an existing Schlage AD or CO Series lock?
Yes. The Schlage Electronics mag stripe (swipe) reader module is built for AD and CO Series electronic locks, and it is used either to replace a reader module that has failed or to convert a lock to a different credential type. So an AD or CO lock running another reader style can be moved over to swipe cards by changing the module rather than replacing the whole lock.
2) Will this mag stripe module read our existing employee ID cards?
It is configurable to read the complete Track 1, 2, or 3 of a magnetic stripe card, so as long as your badge data sits on one of those three standard tracks, the module can be set to read it. Worth pulling one of your current cards and confirming which track your data is encoded on before you configure it.
3) Is this a swipe reader or a tap/proximity reader?
Swipe. This is a magnetic stripe reader module, so the card is drawn through the slot rather than held near the face. If your credentials are proximity or smart cards, this is the wrong module and you'd want the AD/CO reader module built for that credential type instead.
4) Do I have to replace the whole electronic lock if the card reader stops working?
No. The reader is a serviceable module on AD and CO Series locks, sold as a replacement part, so a failed swipe reader is a module swap rather than a full lockset replacement. That is the main reason facilities standardize on the AD/CO platform, the credential side is field-changeable.
5) What finishes does the Schlage AD/CO mag stripe reader module come in?
Six finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and 643E aged bronze. Match the module to the finish already on the lock body so the opening doesn't end up two-toned, and if you are standardizing a building, 626 satin chrome is the usual commercial default.
6) We want to switch a building from mag stripe back to another credential later. Is that possible?
Yes, in both directions. These modules exist specifically so an AD or CO Series lock can be converted from one reader type to another, so a site can start on swipe cards and move to a different credential later by ordering the matching reader module for those locks. The lock body, chassis and trim stay in place.
7) Will this mag stripe module work on a Schlage lock that isn't AD or CO Series?
No. The module is specific to the AD and CO Series electronic lock platforms. Older or other Schlage electronic locks use their own reader hardware and this will not drop into them.
