Single gang. The 709 Series 2 inch square illuminated button is a single gang installation, and the faceplate cover is available in single gang or narrow style. The button face itself is 2 inches square, so plan the wall or mullion opening around a standard single gang box.

No. The 709 Series pushbutton is an indoor device only. On an exterior opening, mount it on the inside face of the wall for egress and use a weather rated device for anything on the outside. It is built for commercial indoor swinging or sliding doors that are electrically or electronically locked.

Momentary is the standard switch, so the circuit is made only while the button is held and the door relocks on release. A maintained (alternate action) switch, which stays in position until pressed again, is a factory order option, so it has to be specified when the order is placed rather than changed in the field.

The Locknetics IPB-100 / IPB-100-N Illuminated Pushbutton from the IPB Series is the closest peer for the same job: an illuminated pushbutton used to control the egress of a door on indoor swinging or sliding doors that are electrically or electronically locked. The Schlage 709 differs in the specifics an integrator sizes the opening around - a 2 inch square button, single gang installation, 12/24 VDC operation offered as a 12 VDC or a 24 VDC build, and 20 gauge wire. Match those four against the opening before treating the IPB-100 as a drop-in for an existing 709 backbox.

20 gauge. Pull 20 gauge conductors from the button back to the access control panel or power supply. Count your conductors before rough-in: the switch itself needs its pair, and the two LED status indicators need their own supply and returns.

The 2 inch square is the large button in the 709 Series; the family also offers 5/8 inch and 7/8 inch round buttons. Go square where the button has to be found fast or hit with a full hand, an elbow, or a cart, which is the usual case in corridors, healthcare, and public egress. The small rounds suit tight faceplates and back of house spots where a discreet button is better. A handicapped symbol option is available if the station has to read as an accessible actuator.

Treat it as a functional peer, not a faceplate-for-faceplate swap. Both are illuminated pushbuttons for door egress control, but the Schlage 709 covered here is specifically a 2 inch square button on a single gang installation, and the Locknetics IPB-100 / IPB-100-N is a separate IPB Series design. On a retrofit the two things that decide it are the cutout the existing plate leaves behind and the supply the reader or maglock power supply is already running - the 709 side of that is 12/24 VDC with 20 gauge wire. Confirm both against the Locknetics part before ordering it for an opening that currently has a 709.

This version carries two LED status indicators, red and green, on an illuminated green button. They are wired as door status or lock status feedback at the button, so someone standing at the opening can see the state without going to a panel. The dual LED indicators are an option on the 709 Series, not standard on every configuration.

Satin stainless steel. It reads close to the 630 satin stainless used on most commercial door hardware, so it blends with existing plates and pulls across a building without a special order.
