Schlage Electronics 623GR – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage 623GR mushroom button fit a standard single gang electrical box?
Yes. The 623GR is a single gang device, so it mounts to a standard single gang box or ring with the stainless steel faceplate covering the opening. The button itself is a 1-5/8 inch mushroom head, which stands proud of the plate for palm or elbow operation.
2) Can the Schlage 623 pushbutton be mounted on a narrow aluminum door stile instead of a wall?
There is a narrow stile version. Ordered with the narrow stile option, the 623 comes with a 1-3/4 by 4-1/2 inch stainless steel plate instead of the standard single gang plate, which is what you need on a glass front or aluminum storefront stile. The standard plate is single gang and is meant for a wall box.
3) What voltage and contact rating does the Schlage 623GR green mushroom button switch?
The switch is rated 3A at 30 VDC, and the device is a 12/24 VDC product. If you order it with the delayed pneumatic action option it is still 3A at 30 VDC but with form Z contacts; alternate action is also 3A at 30 VDC. The LED itself runs 12-24 VDC at .025A at 28 VDC. That covers typical 12 or 24 VDC mag lock and strike circuits, but it is a low voltage DC switch, not a line voltage one.
4) Do I need momentary, delayed action, or maintained action on a door release button?
Momentary is the default on the 623 and is what most egress and release applications use: the circuit breaks the moment you let go. Delayed pneumatic action holds the circuit for an adjustable 0 to 60 seconds, which is what you want when someone needs time to get through the opening after pressing. Alternate action (maintained) latches on with one press and off with the next, so it is used where a door needs to stay unlocked until someone deliberately relocks it. Note the delayed action option cannot be combined with the DPDT switch.
5) What is the difference between the Schlage 623GR mushroom button and the Locknetics IPB-100 illuminated pushbutton?
The Schlage 623 is a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button with a stainless steel faceplate and translucent cone, mounted in a single gang box and rated 12/24 VDC, with a momentary switch standard and factory options for alternate action, delayed pneumatic action, DPDT, and a narrow stile plate. The Locknetics IPB-100 and IPB-100-N belong to the IPB illuminated pushbutton series, so if the requirement on the drawing is specifically an illuminated pushbutton assembly rather than a heavy-duty mushroom actuator, the IPB series is the part written for that role.
6) Can I get a Schlage 623 pushbutton that switches two separate circuits?
Order the DPDT option. That gives a double pole, double throw switch so one press can drive two independent circuits, for example dropping a mag lock while signalling an alarm shunt or a door position input. DPDT cannot be combined with the delayed pneumatic action option, so if you need timing and two circuits, pick one.
7) What is the difference between the Schlage 621, 623, 625, and 631 pushbuttons?
They differ mainly in button size and duty. The 621 uses a 1-1/4 inch button with a stainless faceplate and translucent cone. The 623 steps up to a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button, same stainless plate and translucent cone. The 625 is the largest at a 2-3/4 inch mushroom, which is the one to use where users are wearing gloves or need a palm strike. The 631 is the extreme-duty choice: 1-1/4 inch metal button, zinc faceplate, metal cone, for abuse-prone openings. Glow-in-the-dark and illuminated cone options are offered on the 621 and 623 only.
8) Is the green mushroom button the right one for a push to exit station?
Yes, green is the conventional color for a release or egress station, and the 623GR is the green cone version of the 1-5/8 inch mushroom button. Schlage offers 12 color and message combinations across this series in multiple styles, plus three LED colors (green, yellow, red), so a red version is the one to use where the button is an emergency or alarm function rather than a normal release.
9) What other illuminated pushbutton could I use instead of the Schlage 623GR?
The Locknetics IPB-100 / IPB-100-N illuminated pushbutton is the other illuminated release station we carry. The IPB-100-N is the narrow variant of that series, so it is the cross-brand counterpart when you are working a narrow stile rather than a wall box. The Schlage 623 differs in that it uses a 1-5/8 inch mushroom head, which is easier to hit with a palm or elbow than a flush round button.
10) Are the action and plate options on the Schlage 623 field-installable or do I have to order them up front?
They are factory orderable. Delayed action, alternate action/maintained, DPDT switching, and the narrow stile plate are all specified when the button is ordered, not added later, so decide the action and the plate before you place the order. Standard build ships as a momentary switch on the single gang stainless plate.
11) I need an illuminated pushbutton for a dark vestibule - is the 623 the right choice or should I look at another part?
The Schlage 623 uses a stainless steel faceplate with a translucent cone and can be ordered with LEDs in green, yellow, or red at a 12-24 VDC .025A@28VDC rating, so it can be specified with indication built in. If you want a pushbutton whose whole identity is illumination, the Locknetics IPB-100 and IPB-100-N are cataloged as illuminated pushbuttons in the IPB Series, which is the straightforward pick when the spec simply calls for an illuminated button.
12) For a high-traffic ADA push-to-open at a hospital corridor, should I use the 623 or a larger button?
The 623 gives you a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button on a single gang stainless steel faceplate. If the opening needs a larger target for gloved hands or wheelchair users, the 625 in the same Schlage family uses a 2-3/4 inch mushroom button with a stainless steel faceplate and translucent cone, while the 631 with its extreme-duty zinc faceplate and metal cone is the one built for abuse-prone locations rather than for a larger actuator.
13) Can a Locknetics IPB pushbutton be swapped in where a Schlage 623 is installed?
They are different assemblies rather than drop-in equivalents. The Schlage 623 is a single gang 1-5/8 inch mushroom button rated 12/24 VDC, with momentary contacts standard at 3A @ 30 VDC and factory options for delayed pneumatic action using form Z contacts or alternate action. The Locknetics IPB-100 and IPB-100-N come from the separate IPB illuminated pushbutton series, so confirm the box preparation, plate size, and switch contact arrangement the existing wiring expects before treating one as a replacement for the other.
14) Can I match the Schlage 623 pushbutton to the other hardware finishes in my building?
Four finishes are offered. 630 satin stainless steel is standard. Beyond that you can get SF-626 satin chrome, SF-625 bright chrome, or SF-613 oil rubbed bronze, all on heavy-duty zinc rather than stainless. For a lobby where trim is dark, the 613 oil rubbed bronze is the match; for openings already running satin stainless plates, stay with 630.
