620/631 Series Heavy Duty Pushbuttons

Schlage 620/631 Series heavy-duty pushbuttons are commonly used to control ingress and/or egress of a door. 620 and 631 Series come standard with a momentary switch but feature many factory orderable options including delayed or maintained action and narrow stile faceplates. Glow-in-the-dark and illuminated cone options on 621 and 623 models.

1) What switch contact rating does the Schlage 631AL pushbutton have, and will it drive a mag lock relay?
The 631 Series button switches 3A @ 30 VDC in the standard momentary configuration. The delayed pneumatic action version is also 3A @ 30 VDC but with form Z contacts, and the alternate action (maintained) version is 3A @ 30 VDC as well. That rating is for low-voltage DC control circuits, which is how these are normally wired into a mag lock or strike control loop rather than switching line power directly.
2) Will the Schlage 631AL pushbutton fit a standard single gang electrical box?
Yes. The 631 is built for single gang mounting, so it drops onto a standard single gang box or mud ring behind the wall. If the button has to go on a narrow door stile or mullion instead of a wall box, order the narrow stile option, which supplies a 1-3/4 by 4-1/2 inch stainless steel plate.
3) What is the difference between the Schlage 631 pushbutton and the 621 and 623 models?
All three are 620/631 Series heavy duty pushbuttons used to control ingress or egress of a door. The 631 uses a 1-1/4 inch metal button with an extreme-duty zinc faceplate and a metal cone. The 621 uses a 1-1/4 inch button with a stainless steel faceplate and a translucent cone, and the 623 steps up to a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button, also with a stainless steel faceplate and translucent cone. Glow-in-the-dark and illuminated cone options are offered on the 621 and 623, not on the 631, so if you need a lit or luminous cone the 621 or 623 is the one to specify; if you want the most rugged faceplate and button, the 631 is the metal-cone version.
4) My application needs the contact to stay made after the button is pressed - is the standard 631 the right choice?
No. The standard 631 comes with a momentary switch rated 3A at 30 VDC, which makes contact only while the button is held. For a contact that stays made, order the alternate action/maintained option, also rated 3A at 30 VDC. If instead you need the contact to hold for a set interval and then drop out, the delayed pneumatic action option is adjustable from 0 to 60 seconds and uses form Z contacts at 3A, 30 VDC. Note that the double pole, double throw switch option cannot be combined with delayed action.
5) I need a larger button for gloved hands or accessibility - what should I use instead of the 631?
The 631 uses a 1-1/4 inch metal button. Within the same 620/631 Series, the 625 uses a 2-3/4 inch mushroom button with a stainless steel faceplate and translucent cone, and the 623 uses a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button with the same faceplate and cone construction. For an opening where the button has to be hit quickly, with a gloved hand, or with a closed fist, the mushroom-button 623 or 625 gives a much larger strike area than the 1-1/4 inch flat metal button on the 631.
6) Can I get the Schlage 631 with both a DPDT switch and the delayed action timer?
No. Double pole double throw and delayed pneumatic action cannot be combined on the same button, so you have to pick one. Choose DPDT when you need a second isolated set of contacts, for example to release the lock and signal an alarm panel or camera at the same time. Choose delayed action when you need the timed hold.
7) What voltage does the Schlage 631 pushbutton LED run on?
The LED option runs on 12 to 24 VDC, rated .025A at 28 VDC, and the button itself is a 12/24 VDC device. Three LED colors are offered, green, yellow and red, so you can indicate locked, unlocked or fault status at the button.
8) The 631 does not fit my narrow stile frame - what are my options?
You do not have to change models. The 631 is a single gang pushbutton, and a narrow stile option is factory orderable with a stainless steel plate measuring 1-3/4 inches by 4-1/2 inches, which is intended for narrow stile applications where the standard single gang plate will not land. Order the narrow stile option rather than substituting a different series.
9) What finishes do the Schlage 620/631 Series pushbuttons come in?
Standard is 630 satin stainless steel. Special finishes are SF-626 satin chrome, SF-613 oil rubbed bronze and SF-625 bright chrome, each on heavy-duty zinc. Pick the special finishes when the button has to match lever and closer hardware in a lobby or guest corridor rather than a back-of-house opening.
10) Can I get PUSH TO EXIT or other wording engraved on the Schlage 631 pushbutton?
Yes. The 620/631 Series is offered with 12 color and message combinations in multiple styles, ordered from the factory rather than field-applied. Specify the message at the time of order, since the faceplate is not something you change later.
