Schlage 620/631 Series heavy-duty pushbuttons are commonly used to control ingress and/or egress of a door. 620 and 631 Series come standard with a momentary switch but feature many factory orderable options including delayed or maintained action and narrow stile faceplates. Schlage Electronics 621GID – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the contact rating on the Schlage 621 pushbutton, and will it switch my maglock circuit?
Contacts are rated 3A at 30 VDC on the standard momentary button, and the same 3A at 30 VDC on the alternate action (maintained) and delayed pneumatic action versions, with form Z contacts on the DA. The glow-in-the-dark 621GID runs on 12/24 VDC. That covers a typical low-voltage maglock or electric strike release circuit within those limits; it is not a line-voltage switch.
2) Do I want momentary, delayed action, or maintained on a request-to-exit pushbutton?
Momentary is the standard build and is what most egress and door release applications use: press it, the contact transfers, release it and it drops out. Delayed pneumatic action holds the release for an adjustable 0 to 60 seconds, which is what you want when someone needs time to get through the opening after pressing. Alternate action is maintained, so it latches on until pressed again, used for unlock-hold or arming functions rather than momentary egress.
3) Can I get the Schlage 621 with a DPDT switch and delayed action together?
No. The double pole double throw switch and the delayed pneumatic action option are mutually exclusive, so you pick one. If you need two isolated circuits switched (say a mag release plus a signal to the panel) order DPDT with the standard momentary action. If you need the timed hold, order DA and work off its form Z contacts.

6) Is a 1-1/4 inch button big enough, or should I use a mushroom button for high traffic exits?

Yes. The 621GID is ordered with a narrow stile stainless steel plate measuring 1-3/4 inches by 4-1/2 inches in place of the standard single gang faceplate, which is what lets it land on a narrow aluminum stile or mullion. The standard configuration is single gang, so specify the narrow stile option at the time of order rather than expecting to swap plates later.
8) Is there a tougher alternative to the Schlage 621GID for a high-abuse door?
The 631 model in the same heavy duty pushbutton family uses a 1-1/4 inch metal button with an extreme-duty zinc faceplate and a metal cone, versus the 621's stainless steel faceplate and translucent cone. Both share the 1-1/4 inch button size. The trade-off is the cone: because the 631 cone is metal rather than translucent, the glow-in-the-dark treatment offered on the 621 is not part of that model, so pick the 631 when impact resistance drives the decision and the 621GID when night visibility does.
9) Will the Schlage 621GID hold a door release open the way a maintained switch does?
Only in the right configuration. The standard 621GID is a momentary switch, so the contact changes state only while the button is pressed. If you need the contact to stay changed after one press, order the alternate action/maintained version rated 3A at 30 VDC. If you need a timed hold instead, the delayed pneumatic action version gives 0 to 60 seconds with form Z contacts. Note that the DPDT double pole double throw configuration is not available together with the delayed action option.
