Schlage 620/631 Series heavy-duty pushbuttons are commonly used to control ingress and/or egress of a door. 620 and 631 Series come standard with a momentary switch but feature many factory orderable options including delayed or maintained action and narrow stile faceplates. 1) Will the Schlage 621RD duress button fit a standard single gang box?
The 621RD mounts to a single gang opening, so it drops into a standard single gang box or ring with the stainless steel faceplate covering the prep. The button itself is 1-1/4 inches. If the door frame or mullion is too narrow for a standard plate, the button can be ordered on a narrow stile stainless steel plate measuring 1-3/4 by 4-1/2 inches instead.
2) What voltage does the Schlage 621 pushbutton run on and what can it switch?
Wiring is 12/24 VDC. The switch contacts are rated 3A at 30 VDC on the standard momentary version, on the alternate action (maintained) version, and on the delayed pneumatic action version, which uses form Z contacts. The LED option runs 12-24 VDC, drawing .025A at 28 VDC. That contact rating is enough for a typical relay or access control input, not for switching a mag lock's full load directly on a large device.
3) Should I order the momentary, alternate action, or delayed action version of the Schlage 621 button?
Momentary is the standard build and is what you want for a normal release: the contact makes only while the button is pressed. Alternate action (maintained) latches, so one press holds the state and the next press releases it, which suits an unlock-and-leave-unlocked condition. Delayed pneumatic action holds the contact for an adjustable 0 to 60 seconds after the press, so the door stays released long enough to get a cart or a gurney through. Pick one at order time, they are factory-built options.
4) Can I get a Schlage 621 duress button with a double pole double throw switch?
DPDT is an orderable option on the 621, which gives you a second isolated set of contacts, useful when one press has to both release the door and signal a panel or annunciator. It cannot be combined with the delayed pneumatic action option, so if you need a timed hold you give up the second pole. Order the DPDT and the DA builds as separate parts if a project needs both behaviours at different doors.
5) What is the difference between the Schlage 621, 623, 625 and 631 pushbuttons?
They differ by button size, shape and faceplate toughness. The 621 is a 1-1/4 inch duress button with a stainless steel faceplate and a translucent cone. The 623 steps up to a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button and the 625 to a 2-3/4 inch mushroom, both stainless faceplate with translucent cone, and the larger mushroom heads are easier to hit with an elbow, a hip or a gloved hand. The 631 is a 1-1/4 inch metal button on an extreme-duty zinc faceplate with a metal cone, which is the one to spec for abuse-prone openings such as corrections, loading docks or exterior public entries.
6) Can I get a lighted or glow in the dark pushbutton for an egress door?
Glow-in-the-dark and illuminated cone options are offered on the 621 and 623 models, and three LED colors are available, green, yellow and red, running 12-24 VDC at .025A@28VDC. The 621 is the 1-1/4 inch button version. If you want an illuminated button already built that way, the Locknetics IPB-100 and IPB-100-N from the IPB Series is the other illuminated pushbutton to look at.
7) Is a Schlage 621 button a request-to-exit device or a door release?
It is a heavy-duty pushbutton used to control ingress, egress, or both at an opening. It is a dry-contact switch, not a controller: it signals whatever is downstream, an access control panel, a relay, or a mag lock power supply, and the behaviour of the door is set by that device plus the option you order on the button. On a 12/24 VDC circuit the contacts carry 3A at 30 VDC.
8) What finishes does the Schlage 620 Series pushbutton come in?
Standard is 630 satin stainless steel. Beyond that the plate can be had as SF-626 satin chrome, SF-625 bright chrome, or SF-613 oil rubbed bronze, each on heavy-duty zinc. For a property manager matching a run of openings, 630 is the one that lines up with most commercial lever and exit device trim already in the building; the 613 is the option if the existing hardware is dark bronze.
9) Is the red Schlage 621RD button labelled, or do I have to add my own legend?
