Schlage Electronics 623GR EX NS – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage 623GR EX push to exit button fit a standard single gang electrical box?
Yes. The 623GR EX mounts to a single gang box, with the 1-5/8 inch green mushroom button and its stainless steel faceplate on the room side. If the button is going on a narrow aluminum stile rather than a wall box, order the narrow stile option, which swaps in a 1-3/4 by 4-1/2 inch stainless steel plate.
2) What switching options can I order on the Schlage 623 pushbutton, and which one do I need for a maglock?
Five build choices: standard (momentary), alternate action/maintained, delayed pneumatic action, DPDT double pole double throw, and narrow stile plate. For a maglock request-to-exit you normally want the momentary standard button, which breaks power while pressed. If the door needs to stay released for a set period after one press, use the delayed action version, adjustable 0 to 60 seconds. Alternate action latches on and stays on until pressed again, which is a hold-open, not a normal egress button. Note DPDT is not available with the delayed action option.
3) What is the difference between the Schlage 623 mushroom button and the 625?
Both are mushroom-style heavy duty pushbuttons with a stainless steel faceplate and translucent cone. The 623 uses a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button, while the 625 steps up to a 2-3/4 inch mushroom button. Choose by how large a strike target the egress point needs, such as a gloved hand or a cart-heavy corridor.
4) For an abuse-prone opening, is there a tougher option than the 623 mushroom button?
Yes. The 631 is the extreme-duty model in the same family, built with a 1-1/4 inch metal button, an extreme-duty zinc faceplate and a metal cone, where the 623 uses a stainless steel faceplate with a translucent cone. The trade-off is that the glow-in-the-dark and illuminated cone options are offered on the 621 and 623 models, not the 631.
5) Is a Locknetics IPB-100 a substitute for the Schlage 623GR EX push to exit button?
They serve the same request-to-exit role but are different devices. The Locknetics IPB-100 and IPB-100-N are illuminated pushbuttons from the IPB Series. The Schlage 623GR EX is a 1-5/8 inch green mushroom button on a single gang faceplate marked PUSH TO EXIT, rated 12/24 VDC. If the specification calls for a mushroom head and the PUSH TO EXIT legend, the 623GR EX is the direct match; verify faceplate cutout and switch action before crossing to the IPB.
6) My opening is a narrow stile aluminum door - can I still use the 623?
Yes. Rather than moving to a different device, the 623 is offered with a narrow stile stainless steel plate measuring 1-3/4 inches by 4-1/2 inches in place of the standard single gang plate. Order that option when the stile will not accept a single gang faceplate.
7) What are the contact ratings on the Schlage 620 series exit pushbutton?
All three switch builds are rated 3A at 30 VDC. The delayed pneumatic action version uses form Z contacts at that same 3A/30 VDC rating. Button voltage is 12/24 VDC, and the LED option is rated 12-24 VDC, .025A at 28 VDC. That is a low voltage DC device, so do not wire it to line voltage.
8) Should I use the 623 mushroom button or the smaller 621, or the 631 metal button?
Pick by traffic and abuse level. The 623 gives a 1-5/8 inch mushroom head, easy to hit with a hand, elbow or cart, on a stainless faceplate with translucent cone. The 621 is a smaller 1-1/4 inch button on the same stainless plate. The 625 steps up to a 2-3/4 inch mushroom for high traffic or gloved hands. For back of house, garages or anywhere vandalism is a concern, the 631 uses a metal button and metal cone in an extreme duty zinc faceplate.
9) Does the Schlage 623GR come marked PUSH TO EXIT, and can I get other colors or wording?
The 623GR EX is the green button engraved PUSH TO EXIT, which is what most inspectors and facility standards expect on an egress button. The 620/631 family is offered in 12 color and message combinations across multiple styles, so a red button or different wording is available if you are labelling a different function, such as door release or an emergency stop.
10) Can one Schlage 623 button switch two things at once, like a maglock and an alarm shunt?
Yes, order the DPDT version. Double pole double throw gives you two independent sets of contacts off one press, so one button can drop the lock and shunt an alarm or trigger an operator at the same time. The one restriction is that DPDT cannot be combined with the delayed pneumatic action option.
11) If I do not need a mushroom head, what smaller Schlage pushbutton covers the same job?
The 621 is the small-button member of the same heavy duty family, using a 1-1/4 inch button with a stainless steel faceplate and translucent cone instead of the 623's 1-5/8 inch mushroom head. Both are used to control ingress or egress of a door and both come standard with a momentary switch.
12) I need the button to hold the circuit rather than pulse - what do I order instead of the standard 623?
Two alternatives to the standard momentary 623 cover that. The alternate action / maintained option latches the contact until pressed again, rated 3A at 30 VDC. The delayed pneumatic action option holds for an adjustable 0 to 60 seconds and uses form Z contacts, also rated 3A at 30 VDC. Note that the double pole double throw option cannot be combined with the delayed action option.
13) Can I get an illuminated or glow in the dark exit button from Schlage?
Yes. Glow-in-the-dark and illuminated cone options are offered on the 621 and 623 models, so the 1-5/8 inch mushroom button can be specified lit. Three LED colors are available, green, yellow and red, rated 12-24 VDC at .025A. If you want a lit button from a different manufacturer, the Locknetics IPB-100 illuminated pushbutton is the comparable option.
14) What finishes does the Schlage 620 series pushbutton come in for matching other hardware in the building?
Standard is 630 satin stainless steel. For matching lever and closer finishes elsewhere on the opening, it is also offered as SF-626 satin chrome, SF-625 bright chrome and SF-613 oil rubbed bronze, all on a heavy duty zinc faceplate.
