Schlage 620/631 Series heavy-duty pushbuttons are commonly used to control ingress and/or egress of a door. 620 and 631 Series come standard with a momentary switch but feature many factory orderable options including delayed or maintained action and narrow stile faceplates. 1) Will the Schlage 623RD EX push to exit button fit a single gang electrical box?
Yes. The 623RD EX mounts to a standard single gang box, which is the prep most request-to-exit buttons already sit in on a commercial opening. The button itself is a 1-5/8 inch mushroom head, so the head stands proud of the plate and can be hit with a forearm, an elbow or a gloved hand. If the door has a narrow stile and there is no room for a single gang plate, order the narrow stile option instead, which comes on a 1-3/4 x 4-1/2 inch stainless steel plate.
2) What voltage does the Schlage 623RD exit pushbutton run on and will it switch my maglock?
The 623 pushbutton is rated 12/24 VDC and the switch contacts carry 3A at 30 VDC, which covers the interrupt duty for typical low voltage electric locking, maglocks and strikes on a 12 or 24 volt supply. The illuminated LED draws .025A at 28 VDC over a 12-24 VDC range. The button is a dry switch, not a power supply, so the lock power still comes from your access control panel or power supply.
3) Should I order momentary, delayed action or maintained on a Schlage 623 push to exit button?
Momentary is the standard build and is what you want for ordinary egress: press it, the lock releases, it re-secures as soon as you let go. Delayed pneumatic action holds the release for an adjustable 0 to 60 seconds, which is the one to pick when someone has to push the button and then walk to the door, or wheel a cart through. Alternate action is maintained, so one press latches the state and the next press restores it, used for holding a door unsecured through a delivery window or an event. 5) Is the red PUSH TO EXIT mushroom button big enough to be an ADA-friendly egress button?
The 623 uses a 1-5/8 inch mushroom head, a middle size in the family. If you need a larger target for a gloved hand, a wheelchair user or a low mounted button in a healthcare or multi-family corridor, the 625 steps up to a 2-3/4 inch mushroom button. The 621 goes the other way at 1-1/4 inches for a tidier plate. All three share the same stainless steel faceplate format.
6) What is the difference between the Schlage 623 and the 631 extreme duty pushbutton for a high abuse opening?
The 623 has a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button with a stainless steel faceplate and a translucent cone, so it can take the illuminated and glow-in-the-dark cone options. The 631 is the extreme duty answer: a 1-1/4 inch metal button on a zinc faceplate with a metal cone, no translucent element. For a school corridor, a loading dock or a detention-adjacent opening where the button gets abused, the metal 631 is the one to spec. Where you want the button findable in a dark stairwell, the 623 with an illuminated or glow cone is the better pick.
7) What is an alternative to the Schlage 623 illuminated exit pushbutton?

Wiring is a low voltage switch leg: a momentary unit gives you a dry contact rated 3A at 30 VDC, which is how nearly every request-to-exit button on a 12 or 24 volt system is wired. Check what you are pulling out first, though. If the old button was a maintained or timed unit, a standard momentary 623 will not reproduce that behavior and you need the alternate action or delayed pneumatic action version to match it.
