Schlage Electronics 623BLH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage 623BLH pushbutton fit a standard single gang electrical box?
Yes. The 623BLH is a single gang device, so it mounts to a standard single gang box or ring with a stainless steel faceplate. The actuator itself is a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button. If you are mounting on a narrow door stile or mullion instead of a wall box, order the narrow stile option, which swaps in a 1-3/4 x 4-1/2 inch stainless steel plate.
2) Does the Schlage 623 pushbutton come with a momentary switch or does it latch?
Standard, the 623 is momentary: it makes contact only while pressed, which is what you want for a door release tied to a mag lock or strike. Two factory options change that. Alternate action (AA) is maintained, so one press holds the contact and the next press releases it, good for holding a door unlocked during business hours. Delayed pneumatic action (DA) holds the contact for an adjustable 0 to 60 seconds after the press. Pick the action when you order; it is not field changeable.
3) What voltage and current can the Schlage 623 pushbutton switch?
Contacts are rated 3A at 30 VDC, in momentary, alternate action, and delayed pneumatic action versions. That covers typical 12 or 24 VDC door strike and mag lock control circuits directly, or a relay coil. The LED, where fitted, runs 12 to 24 VDC and draws .025A at 28 VDC. Do not run line voltage through it.
4) What is the difference between the Schlage 621, 623, 625 and 631 pushbuttons?
All four are heavy duty door control buttons in the same family, split by actuator size and construction. The 621 is a 1-1/4 inch button with a stainless steel faceplate and translucent cone. The 623 steps up to a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button, same stainless plate and translucent cone. The 625 is the large 2-3/4 inch mushroom, used where the button has to be hit from a distance or with a wheelchair. The 631 is a 1-1/4 inch metal button with an extreme duty zinc faceplate and metal cone, for abuse-prone or exterior-type locations where the plastic cone would not survive. Glow-in-the-dark and illuminated cones are offered on the 621 and 623 only.
5) For a high abuse opening like a parking garage or loading dock, what should I use instead of the Schlage 623BLH?
The 623BLH is a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button on a stainless steel faceplate with a translucent cone. Where the station takes physical abuse, the Schlage 631 in the same pushbutton family uses a 1-1/4 inch metal button, an extreme duty zinc faceplate and a metal cone rather than a translucent one. You trade the larger mushroom target and the illuminated or glow cone options, which are offered on the 621 and 623, for the metal button and heavier faceplate.
6) I need a pushbutton for a 1-3/4 inch wide aluminum stile - what do I order instead of the standard single gang 623?
The 623 is normally furnished for single gang mounting, which is wider than a narrow aluminum stile will take. The same 623 is offered with a narrow stile stainless steel plate measuring 1-3/4 inches by 4-1/2 inches, which keeps the 1-5/8 inch mushroom button and the blue handicapped symbol while fitting the narrow face. Order that option rather than a different model.
7) I need a pushbutton that switches two separate circuits at once. Can the 623 do that?
Yes, order the DPDT option, double pole double throw, which gives you two isolated sets of contacts off one press, typical when you need to release a lock and signal an alarm panel or shunt at the same time. One restriction: DPDT cannot be combined with the delayed pneumatic action option. If you need a timed hold plus two circuits, the DA version uses form Z contacts instead.
8) Is the blue handicap symbol button the right choice for an ADA door operator?
The 623BLH is the blue handicapped symbol version of the 623, the standard marking for an accessible entrance actuator. The 1-5/8 inch mushroom head is easy to strike with a closed fist, elbow, or forearm, which is why it is used at accessible openings rather than the flat 1-1/4 inch 621 button.
9) Can I get a lit pushbutton for a dark corridor or vestibule?
Yes. The 623 accepts illuminated and glow-in-the-dark cone options, and LEDs are offered in green, yellow, and red, so you can indicate locked versus unlocked state at the button. LED supply is 12 to 24 VDC at .025A at 28 VDC, wired separately from the switch contacts. Locknetics also builds an illuminated pushbutton, the IPB-100 / IPB-100-N, if you want an alternative brand.
10) Can I change a Schlage 623 pushbutton from momentary to maintained after it is installed?
No. Delayed action, alternate action, DPDT, and the narrow stile plate are all factory ordered options on the 620 series, not field kits. Decide the switch action and the plate before the order goes in, because swapping later means a new device.
11) The 623BLH momentary button does not hold the door open long enough - what is the alternative?
Two variations of the 623 change the switch behavior instead of the button. Delayed pneumatic action gives an adjustable 0 to 60 second delay and is rated 3A at 30 VDC with form Z contacts. Alternate action, also called maintained, latches the contact until the button is pressed again and is rated 3A at 30 VDC. Note that the DPDT double pole double throw configuration is not available together with the delayed action option.
12) What finishes are available on the Schlage 620 series pushbutton faceplate?
Standard is 630 satin stainless steel. Three heavy duty zinc plate finishes are also offered: SF-626 satin chrome, SF-625 bright chrome, and SF-613 oil rubbed bronze. If you are matching existing lever trim or push plates across a building, the 626 and 613 are the usual matches.
