A durable and versatile latching solution. The traditional design has a short throw angle, allowing the door to be opened with an easy push or pull action, even when hands are not free.

This patented design is ideal for restrooms or patient bathrooms. The privacy function is actuated by a thumbturn and an opposite side release provides for access in case of emergency.

HL6 mortise lock option

Combines the features and convenience of the HL6 push/pull operation with the Schlage L Series heavy-duty mortise lock.

1) Will the Schlage HL6-9010 hospital latch work on a left-hand door and a right-hand door?
The HL6-9010 push/pull mortise latch is non-handed, so one part covers both swings. The paddle retracts the latchbolt from either side at all times, and the inside paddle is always free for immediate egress. For a property manager standardizing a corridor or a patient wing, that means a single item number for every opening regardless of hand.
2) What backset and strike prep does the Schlage HL6-9010 mortise latch need?
It's a 2-3/4 inch backset mortise latch and it uses a standard ASA strike per ANSI 115.1, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches. If the frame already carries an ASA strike from an existing mortise lock, the prep matches. Door thickness is 1-3/4 inches, the standard commercial leaf.
3) Will the HL6-9010 fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The HL6-9010 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors only, which rules out the thinner 1-3/8 inch leaf common on older interior openings. If the patient room or restroom door is 1-3/8, this mortise latch is the wrong part for it.
4) Does the Schlage HL6-9010 lock, or is it always free to open?
It doesn't lock. The 9010 is the passage function, ANSI/BHMA F01, non-keyed with no cylinder. Both paddles retract the latch at all times. Use it on patient rooms, exam rooms, corridors and closets where you want latching without security. For a restroom or patient bath that needs privacy, the PL7/PL8 thumbturn privacy latch is the function to order instead.
5) Is the Schlage HL6 push/pull latch approved for fire doors?
The HL Series quiet push/pull latches are UL listed for all single labeled metal or wood doors, so single fire-rated openings are covered. Pairs are a different situation and aren't part of that statement.
6) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage HL6-9010 hospital push/pull mortise latch?
The ABH 6600 Series is the nearest match. It is a mortise lock hospital push/pull latch with a 2-3/4 inch backset, the same backset the HL6-9010 uses. Both are push/pull paddle hardware driving a mortise case rather than a tubular latch, so they address the same opening: a healthcare or institutional door where the paddle has to retract the latch hands-free. The HL6-9010 is the passage function, non-handed, with the latchbolt retracted by the paddle from either side at all times.
7) If the door is prepped for a tubular latch instead of a mortise pocket, what should I use in place of the HL6-9010?
Use a tubular hospital push/pull latch instead. The Trimco 1562A Hospital Series is a tubular push/pull latch in passage function with levers down, and it is rated heavy duty. The HL6-9010 is a mortise lock type and expects an ASA strike to ANSI 115.1, 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch, so it will not drop into a bored tubular prep without reworking the door edge.
8) What finishes does the Schlage HL6-9010 come in, and can I match the rest of my building?
Eight finishes are orderable: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel and 630 satin stainless steel. Satin chrome (626) and satin stainless (630) also exist in antimicrobial versions, 626AM and 630AM, which is what most healthcare specs call for. Brass base material is the B option on the US26 and US260 finishes.
9) What options do I need to specify when ordering an HL6 hospital latch?
Six suffixes are available and they're decided at order time, not in the field: B for brass base material on US26 and US260 finishes, E for handles engraved PUSH and PULL, EN for entrance-only latch, EO for exit-only latch, L for lead lined (radiology and imaging rooms), and SOC for pin-in-socket security screws. Mounting position is also a choice, since the HL Series supports a range of vertical or horizontal paddle positions.
10) Should I use the HL6 mortise latch or the tubular hospital latch?
The HL6-9010 is a mortise latch, so the door needs a mortise pocket and an ASA frame prep. Choose it when you're replacing existing mortise hardware or specifying new heavy-duty openings. If the doors are bored for tubular hardware instead, a tubular hospital latch is the right body, and the Trimco 1562A is a heavy-duty tubular push/pull passage latch we carry. Cutting a mortise pocket into a door prepped for tubular is not a field job.
11) We need a low-profile paddle that does not project as far into the corridor - is there an alternative to the HL6-9010?
Yes. The ABH 6800 Series is a low profile hospital push/pull latch built for ADA compliance, and the ABH 6800Q is the quiet version of that low profile design with a round cover. Both trade the traditional projecting paddle for a shallower profile. The HL6-9010 uses the traditional HL6 design with a short throw angle so the door opens with an easy push or pull even when hands are not free, and its dampened paddle action is rated 50 percent quieter than the previous Schlage solution.
12) Is the Kaba Ilco 459 push/pull paddle a substitute for the Schlage HL6-9010?
No, they are not the same class of item. The Kaba Ilco 459 Series is a push/pull paddle - the operating trim - while the HL6-9010 is a complete mortise latch assembly in passage function with a 2-3/4 inch backset and an ASA strike to ANSI 115.1. If the mortise case and latch in the door are being replaced, the 459 paddle alone will not do it. If only the paddle trim is being swapped on existing hardware, that is where a paddle-only part applies.
13) Is the HL6-9010 durable enough for a high-traffic hospital corridor?
It's rated heavy duty for commercial use, with a zinc and steel body. The paddle action is dampened on depression and snap back, which is where the 50 percent noise reduction over the previous HL design comes from, and it's standard on every HL Series unit rather than an option you add. 14) Does the Schlage HL6-9010 need power or wiring?
No wiring. The 9010 is a purely mechanical passage latch with no electronic components. Electrified functions do exist within the HL6 mortise range, which covers 16 mortise functions including electrified, but they're separate models from this one.
