Schlage L464J 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage L464J mortise deadbolt come with a cylinder core, or do I have to order one separately?
The L464J is furnished less core. It's a 6-pin full size interchangeable core prep, so you supply and install the SFIC/FSIC core keyed to your system. Schlage's standard cylinder reference for the L Series is a conventional 6-pin in the S123 keyway, so if you are not running an interchangeable core system, that is the alternative to specify. Budget the core into the order or the deadbolt arrives unusable.
2) Will the Schlage L464 mortise deadbolt fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
That's exactly the opening it is built for. The L464 is a 2-3/4 inch backset mortise deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and it is non-handed, so the same body works on a left or right hand door without reversing anything. Thinner doors (1-3/8 inch, common on older interior openings) are outside what this one is set up for.
3) What size mortise pocket do I need to rout for the Schlage L464 deadbolt case?
The small lock case measures 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches, with a 5-9/16 x 1-1/4 inch face. That is a much smaller pocket than a full L9000 mortise lock body, which is why it drops into narrow utility doors and restroom doors where a full mortise case will not go. The strike side takes a 10-079 strike, 1-1/8 x 3-1/2 inches, square corner, with box, cut to ANSI 115.5 prep.
4) Will the Schlage L464 deadbolt land in my existing ANSI strike prep?
If the frame is cut to ANSI 115.5, yes. The L464 ships with the 10-079 square corner strike and box, 1-1/8 x 3-1/2 inches, which is the ANSI 115.5 prep. A frame already prepped for a standard ANSI mortise strike takes it without new frame work. Round corner or non-ANSI frame preps will need filling or a strike change.
5) Can I use a mortise deadbolt as the only lock on a restroom or utility door, or do I need a latch too?
The L400 Series is meant to be the primary lock where no latching is required, which is exactly restrooms and small utility doors. There is no latchbolt, so the door will not stay closed on its own, you get security only when the bolt is thrown. On a door that has to stay shut when unlocked, pair it with a passage latch or step up to a mortise lock with a latchbolt.
6) Is the Schlage L400 mortise deadbolt Grade 1, and what standard is it tested to?
Grade 1, and the L400 is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.36. One caveat that matters if you are writing a spec: with interchangeable core cylinders the L Series is rated Grade 2 security, and Grade 1 operational and security comes with a concealed shell cylinder. Since the L464J is a full size interchangeable core prep, spec writers standardizing on Grade 1 security should note which cylinder they are putting in it. It also meets the Buy American Act, which matters on government and institutional work.
7) What is the difference between a keyed indicator deadbolt like the Schlage L464 and a thumbturn indicator deadbolt?
Keying is the whole difference in who controls the door. The L464 is a keyed single cylinder deadbolt, so it locks with a key, which is what you want on a storeroom or utility space staff need to secure. A thumbturn indicator bolt locks from the inside by hand with no key, which is what a restroom occupant needs. If the occupant is the one locking the door, look at a thumbturn by indicator unit like the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 or the Arrow E50 exit deadlock, which shows vacant/occupied outside and is non-keyed.
8) What is a Grade 1 alternative to the Schlage L464J if the door is a cylindrical prep instead of a mortise pocket?
The Schlage L464 is a mortise deadbolt, so it needs a mortise pocket in the door edge. On a bored cylindrical door, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 visual status lock with a privacy/bed/bath function, and the Accentra AUYPL02 in the YPL Series is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with a visual status indicator. Both hold Grade 1 like the L464 but are indicating privacy locks rather than a keyed deadbolt, so they suit a restroom or similar occupancy door rather than a keyed storeroom application.
9) Which indicator deadbolt uses a thumbturn instead of a key like the Schlage L464J?
The L464 is keyed, single cylinder, so it operates by key from the outside. If the opening should throw the bolt by hand from the inside, the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw, the Accentra D292 is a Grade 2 cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator, and the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is a Grade 1 indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn. The Arrow E50 covers the same thumbturn by indicator function at Grade 2 and is non-keyed, showing Vacant/Occupied on the outside.
10) Is a Falcon D271 or Falcon H2171 a substitute for a Schlage L464J on a restroom door?
They solve the restroom differently. The Falcon D271 is a Grade 2, medium duty one-sided deadbolt with an occupancy indicator and a thumbturn inside. The Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with an occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt, so it combines latching and deadbolt in one device. The Schlage L464 is Grade 1, heavy duty, and a mortise deadbolt with no latch, single cylinder keyed. Choose the H2171 where the door needs a latch as well as the bolt, and the L464 where a Grade 1 mortise deadbolt with no latching is what the opening calls for.
11) Which indicator deadbolt carries a fire rating for a labeled opening instead of the Schlage L464J?
Among the indicating deadbolts, the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw, fire rated, and specified for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a fire rated Grade 1 visual status lever lock for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. The Schlage L400 series is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 1, and the L Series is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, with the letter F and UL symbol on the latch front indicating the listing.
12) Is the Schlage L464 keyed on both sides or just one?
Single cylinder. The L464 is keyed from one side only, in a storeroom deadbolt configuration, so there is no key required on the opposite face. That makes it suited to storage and utility openings where staff key in and the inside face stays simple.
13) Can the deadbolt be sawed through or picked by pulling the lever off?
The deadbolt carries an anti-saw pin inside the bolt to stop cut-through attacks, and the L Series uses a security blocking hub so removing the levers does not open the lock. The bolt case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. This is heavy duty, commercial grade hardware, not a residential bolt.
14) What finishes does the Schlage L464 mortise deadbolt come in, and which one matches my existing satin chrome hardware?
Nine finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze clear coated, 613 dark oxidized satin bronze oil rubbed, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless and 630 satin stainless. For a building already standardized on satin chrome, order 626. If your other openings are stainless trim, 630 is the common commercial match rather than 626.
15) Will the Schlage L464 deadbolt trim match the levers on my other Schlage L Series doors?
It does, and the suiting runs wider than the L Series alone. Schlage L levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so a building standardized on L Series trim keeps a consistent look across the deadbolt openings, the lever openings and the exit device doors. Order the deadbolt in the same finish code you are already using.
16) Can I get a high security key system on the Schlage L400 deadbolt?
You can. Specifying a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder gives you a UL437 listed locking cylinder in place of the standard one. Since the L464J comes less core, that decision gets made when you order the cores, not the lock body.
17) Is the Schlage L464 an electrified lock or can it be wired to an access control system?
This one is mechanical, not electronic. The L Series does offer electrified locks that auto detect 12V/24V DC with selectable EL/EU and options like RX, DPS, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor, but those are the electrified L9000 lock bodies, not the L400 deadbolt. If the opening needs to be released or monitored from an access control head end, spec an electrified L9000 rather than this deadbolt.
18) I need a Grade 1 indicator lock for a behavioral health or high traffic restroom. What are my options besides a mortise deadbolt?
For a lever-operated privacy function rather than a deadbolt, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty visual status lever lock for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors and it is fire rated. The Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series is another Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with a visual status indicator. For behavioral health specifically, Schlage's Gold Standard ligature resistant trim is offered on the L Series, which is a route the cylindrical options do not give you.
19) Is the Schlage L400 deadbolt case the same as an L9000 mortise lock body?
No, and they are not interchangeable in the door. The L400 uses a small case, 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches, where the L9000 is the full size universal mortise case that produces the lever and latch functions. Pulling an L9000 out and dropping an L464 into the same pocket leaves an oversized mortise. Going the other direction, an L400 pocket is too small for an L9000 body.
20) What Grade 1 indicator lock can I standardize on across a facility alongside a Schlage L464J?
The L464 is Grade 1 and heavy duty for commercial use. Two other Grade 1 indicating options are the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL, an extra heavy duty privacy/bed/bath visual status lever lock that carries a fire rating and fits doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn. The L464 is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors, so on thicker doors the CLX3320 covers the range the L464 does not.
21) Are the Emtek indicator privacy bolts an alternative to a Schlage L464J?
They are a different device. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire, 8483 Watford, 8583 Square and 8683 Disk are thumbturn privacy bolts with double rosettes and an indicator, and they are used with a brass passage set, meaning the passage latch handles the door and the bolt provides the privacy. The Schlage L464 is a keyed single cylinder mortise deadbolt in Grade 1 for commercial openings. Specify the Emtek bolts where a decorative thumbturn privacy bolt paired with a passage set is wanted, and the L464 where a keyed commercial mortise deadbolt is required.
