1) How does the Schlage L9457 classroom security function actually work on a classroom door?
The L9457 is a classroom security mortise lock with a deadbolt. The latchbolt retracts from either side. The deadbolt is thrown by key from either side, and throwing the deadbolt locks the outside lever. Turning the inside lever retracts both the deadbolt and the latchbolt and unlocks the outside, so the inside is always free for egress. That is what lets a teacher lock the door from inside the classroom without stepping into the corridor.
2) Does the Schlage L9457 take a large format interchangeable core?
Yes. The L9457J is built for a large format interchangeable core, so it drops into an existing LFIC keying system and cores can be swapped without pulling the lock. One trade-off to know: Schlage rates the L9000 lock at ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 security and operational, but with interchangeable core cylinders the security rating is Grade 2. A concealed shell cylinder keeps A156.13 Grade 1 operational and security.
3) Can a Schlage L9457 mortise lock be used on a fire rated classroom door?
Yes. The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft and pairs up to 8 ft x 10 ft. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you confirm a given lock is the listed version. The L9076 and L9077 functions are the exceptions to the 3-hour listing.
4) What lever and rose options do I have to specify when ordering the Schlage L9457J?
Three things get specified: lever design, rose, and finish. The lever designs offered are 02, 06 and 17. The rose choices are A wrought rose and B wrought rose. Finish is 626 satin chrome. Any of the three levers can be had with either rose in 626, so match the design to whatever is already hanging on the rest of the building's doors.
5) Is the Schlage L9457 a mortise lock or a cylindrical lock, and what door prep does it need?
It is a mortise lock. The lock body mortises into a pocket cut inside the edge of the door, not into a round bore through the face like a cylindrical lockset. If your doors are prepped for a cylindrical lock you'll need a mortise pocket cut or a new door. The upside is the heavier body and the separate deadbolt, which a cylindrical classroom lock does not give you.
6) Does this Schlage mortise lock meet ADA and school accessibility requirements?
The L Series meets ADA requirements, and all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. The lever trim on the L9457 satisfies the no-tight-grasping requirement for classroom and public corridor openings.
7) Will a Schlage L9457 work on a government or public school job with Buy American requirements?
Yes. The Schlage L Series mortise locks meet the Buy American Act (BAA), which is what most federal, state and public school specs call for. The line also carries Miami-Dade NOA's and Florida Building Commission listings if the opening is in a Florida wind-borne debris zone.
8) Can I get a high security cylinder in the Schlage L9457?
Yes. A UL437 listed locking cylinder is available as an option on the L Series, specified as a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder. That is the route to take if the classroom or lab opening needs key control and drill and pick resistance beyond a standard core.
9) Is the Schlage L9457 strong enough for a high traffic school corridor?
The L9000 mortise locks are tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 as Grade 1 for both security and operational, which is the top commercial grade and the usual spec for school and institutional corridors. They also carry ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 and are UL listed. Note the Grade 1 security rating applies with a concealed shell cylinder; with an interchangeable core the security rating drops to Grade 2.
