The Schlage ND Series covers a full range of commercial lock options across mechanical and electrified configurations. The information below covers the mechanical lock characteristics applicable to the ND40S.

The ND Series is tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque, more than 2-1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. provides resistance against pry bar attacks. The ND Series shows near zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, making them interchangeable and suitable for new construction and retrofit applications.

    Schlage ND40S RHO 626 RH OS-OCC – Frequently Asked Questions

    1) Will a Schlage ND40S drop into the cylindrical lock prep already bored in my door?
    If the door is bored for the standard ANSI 161 cylindrical prep, yes. Every ND Series lock, mechanical, electrified or electronic, uses that same 161 prep, which is what makes them interchangeable across new construction and retrofit. The 161 prep is the common 2-1/8 inch cross bore with a 1 inch edge bore on a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the ND40S ships with a 2-3/4 inch backset latch, the 13-248 spring latch with a square corner 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inch face. Changing function later, say from this privacy lock to a keyed storeroom, is a lock swap and not a door change.
    2) Will the Schlage ND40S latch into the ANSI strike already cut into my frame?
    The ND40S comes with the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the standard ANSI strike cutout in a hollow metal frame, so if your frame carries that prep the supplied strike drops straight into the existing cutout and the latch lines up. Latch is the 13-248 spring latch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a square corner 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inch face. A frame prepped for a small square-corner or T-strike does not match a 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 opening, so that frame needs a different strike or filling and re-prepping.
    3) If someone locks themselves in the bathroom, how do you get a Schlage ND40S open from the hallway?
    Emergency access is built in. The ND40S locks with a push button on the inside and opens from the outside with a small screwdriver, so maintenance can get in without a key and without pulling the lever apart. The button also releases the moment the inside lever is turned or the door is closed, and the inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room walks out immediately without unlocking anything first. There is no cylinder and no key on this function, so nothing has to be keyed on the order.
    4) What else is out there if I need a Grade 1 privacy lever lock with an occupancy indicator?
    Two other Grade 1 indicator lever locks worth putting side by side with the Schlage ND40S. The Accentra AUYPL02 in the YPL Series is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with a visual status indicator. The Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL, from the CLX3300 Series, is an extra heavy duty Grade 1 privacy visual status lever lock, fire rated, and listed for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, which is the one to look at if the door is thicker than standard. All three are the same privacy, bed and bath function. Where the Schlage separates itself is the ordering menu around it: nine lever designs, ten finishes, and it suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage trim if you are matching a whole building.
    5) Which Schlage ND40S lever designs comply with the California fire code lever return requirement?
    Six of the nine. Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk all return to the door 1/2 inch or less and comply. Athens, Broadway and Latitude are not on that list. On a California job, order the lever as RHO, SPA, TLR, OME, LON or BRK.
    6) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage ND40S indicator privacy lock?
    Three choices on every order. Lever design, one of nine: ATH Athens, BRK Boardwalk, BRW Broadway, LAT Latitude, LON Longitude, OME Omega, RHO Rhodes, SPA Sparta, TLR Tubular. Finish, one of ten: 605, 606, 612, 613, 619, 622, 625, 626, 626AM or 643E. And hand, left or right. Nothing about keying, since this function is non-keyed. One extra call-out worth knowing: on a pair of fire doors the 3/4 inch latch option is what the 8 by 8 three hour and 8 by 10 ninety minute UL listings are based on.
    7) Do I need to know the handing before I order a Schlage ND40S?
    Yes, the order takes a hand, left or right. Work it out from the outside of the room, the corridor side: if the hinges are on your left as you face the door, it is left hand, hinges on your right is right hand. Get that wrong and the indicator rose ends up on the wrong side of the opening, so confirm it door by door before releasing a multi-door order.
    8) Does the Schlage ND40S meet ADA requirements for a restroom in a public building?
    It meets ADA and ICC A117.1 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities. It is a lever rather than a knob, so it operates without grasping, pinching or twisting the wrist, and locking is a push button on the inside that releases just by turning the inside lever or pulling the door closed. Nobody has to work a separate turn piece to get out.
    9) I just want vacant/occupied indication on a restroom door without replacing the whole lockset. What are my options?
    An indicator deadbolt mounts above the existing latch and leaves the lever alone. The Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Accentra D292 is a Grade 2 cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Arrow E50 is a non-keyed Grade 2 exit deadlock with a vacant/occupied indicator outside, also 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch. Cal-Royal's IND84 is the Grade 3 take on the same idea. Go to the Schlage ND40S instead when the existing lever is worn out anyway, because it puts the latch, the privacy function and the indicator in one chassis on one bore.
    10) Are the Emtek thumbturn privacy bolts an equivalent to a Schlage ND40S?
    Not a like for like swap. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire, 8483 Watford, 8583 Square and 8683 Disk are thumbturn privacy bolts with double rosettes and an indicator, and each one is sold to be used with a separate brass passage set. The bolt does the locking, the passage set does the latching, and the door carries both. The ND40S is a single Grade 1 cylindrical lockset that latches, locks and indicates from one chassis on the standard 161 bore. For a commercial restroom on a fire rated opening, the ND40S is the one-part answer. The Emtek bolts are the decorative route on a door that already has a passage lever you want to keep.
    11) Is the Schlage ND40S durable enough for a high traffic public restroom or locker room?
    That is the traffic it is built for. Grade 1, heavy duty, certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000, with a zinc and steel chassis. Cycle life is a minimum 16 million cycles with no visible lever sag and no set screws, spacers or O-rings propping the lever up, which is where cheaper levers usually fail first. The locked lever holds against 3,100 inch-pounds of abusive torque and 1,600 pounds of offset pull without giving access, and 100 vertical lever impacts. On a door the public swings on all day, that is a different service life than a Grade 2 privacy set.
    12) Can I match the Schlage ND40S to the exit devices and other lever locks already in my building?
    Ten finishes to match to: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. Nine lever designs, so the lever shape on your other openings is likely covered: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. The ND Series also suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, so the same lever and finish carry through to the openings running panic hardware.
    13) Which indicator lock works on a 2 inch thick door?
    The Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL lists a door thickness range of 1-3/4 to 2 inches, and it is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty privacy/bedroom/bathroom visual status lever lock, so it holds the privacy function and the indicator in one lever lock on the thicker door. The indicator deadbolts in the same class run thinner: the Accentra D292 and the Arrow E50 both list 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches, and the Hager 3216 lists 1-3/4 inches. Measure the door at the bore before ordering, because that range is the constraint that decides which of these will actually assemble.
    14) Which occupancy indicator hardware can go on a fire rated restroom door?
    The Schlage ND40S is UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft by 10 ft, with pair doors listed at 3 hours for 8 ft by 8 ft and 90 minutes for 8 ft by 10 ft using the 3/4 inch latch option. Among the peer indicator products, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL and the Hager 3216 both carry a fire rating. Fire rated openings also constrain lever projection, and the ND40S lever designs with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less - Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk - are the ones that comply with the California Fire Code requirement.
    15) The restroom door has to meet accessibility requirements. Lever indicator lock or thumbturn indicator deadbolt?
    The Schlage ND40S meets ADA requirements and ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings, and it operates on a lever with push button locking, so the everyday motion is a push and a lever throw. If the design calls for a deadbolt rather than a lockset, the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is an indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn and a thumbturn x indicator function, which is the accessible-turn version of that format. Choose the ND40S when the opening is getting one device for latching, privacy and status, and the IND90-G2 when the door keeps separate passage trim and needs the indicator on a bolt.
