Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but they continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND98PD RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the 180-degree lockdown work on the Schlage ND classroom security lever lock?
There's a key cylinder in both levers, and either one can lock down the opening. Rotate the key 180 degrees counter-clockwise and return it to the start position, and the outside lever goes inoperative. Rotate 180 degrees clockwise the same way to unlock it. The inside lever is always free, so a teacher can lock the door from inside the room without stepping into the corridor and anyone inside can still get out. Locks ordered in 626 Satin Chrome ship with an instruction rose marked with the rotation direction; other finishes get a standard rose.
2) What door thickness does this Schlage ND classroom security lock fit, and can it go on a thinner door?
Standard build is for a 1-3/4 inch door, which is the usual commercial thickness. If you order it with indicator trim it also fits 1-3/4 inches, and separately sold spacer kits take that trim down to doors from 1-3/8 to 1-11/16 inches.
3) Will this Schlage ND lock drop into the door prep I already have?
It uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, the same prep across the whole ND Series including the electronic and ligature-resistant trims, so it swaps into existing ND openings and standard 161 bored doors. Latch is the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, so if your existing prep is 2-3/8 inch backset the latch bore won't line up.
4) Do I need to specify handing when ordering this Schlage ND lever lock?
No. The ND cylindrical lock is non-handed, so one part number covers left and right hand doors and you don't need to know the swing before you order. Both sides get the same lever, rose and finish.
5) What cylinder and keying options do I have to choose when ordering this lock?
Four cylinder choices: PD conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway, JD prepped for a Schlage FSIC core, BD less SFIC cylinder, or LD less cylinder entirely if you're supplying your own. Keying is a required selection, KD keyed different (standard) or KA keyed alike for multiple locks, plus a None option when you're going less cylinder. With the conventional cylinder you get two nickel silver cut keys per lock. Because this function takes a cylinder in both levers, budget for two cylinders per door on the less-cylinder options.
6) Is this Schlage ND lock approved for a fire-rated classroom door, and does it meet ADA?
Tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000, Grade 1, and UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft. Pairs are covered at 3 hours up to 8 x 8 ft and 90 minutes up to 8 x 10 ft, both with the 3/4 inch latch option. It meets ADA and complies with ICC A117.1, and it meets the Buy American Act and FF-H-106C Series 161 for federal work. For California, levers with a 1/2 inch or less return to door comply: Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk.
7) What is the difference between a classroom lock and a classroom security lock?
A standard classroom function (ND70, ANSI F84) is keyed from the outside only, so locking the door means the teacher steps into the corridor to do it. The classroom security function puts a cylinder in both levers so the door can be locked down from inside the room, which is the whole point for lockdown procedures. If you only need conventional classroom keying, ND70 F84 is the cheaper spec. For a Grade 1 classroom security lever from another brand, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom security lock covers the same function on 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
8) What is the closest equivalent to the Schlage ND98 classroom security lock from another manufacturer?
The Dexter C1000 Series classroom security cylindrical lever lock is the nearest match. It is a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever lock with a classroom security function and a clutching mechanism, and it fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The ND98 is also Grade 1 cylindrical with a classroom security (180-degree lockdown) function, keyed with a double cylinder so either lever accepts a key, and it is non-handed. Both let a teacher lock the outside lever from inside the room with a key while the inside lever stays free.
9) If I do not need lockdown from inside the room, what lock should I use instead of the ND98?
A standard classroom function lock is the simpler choice. The Dexter C1000 Series classroom cylindrical lever lock is Grade 1, keyed and clutching, and is keyed from the outside lever only, which suits rooms where the corridor side is locked and unlocked by staff with a key. The Schlage ND98 is a double cylinder arrangement with a key cylinder in both levers so the outside lever can be locked from inside the room by turning the key 180 degrees.
10) Can I substitute a Grade 1 passage lever for the ND98 on a classroom door?
No. Options like the Falcon K101, a Grade 1 heavy duty non-handed passage cylindrical lock rated for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, the Falcon T101 Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever are non-keyed and cannot be locked at all. The Schlage ND98 is a keyed lock with a cylinder in each lever and both levers fixed until a key is used. Passage levers suit corridor and closet doors, not any door that must be secured during a lockdown.
11) Will the lock latch into the strike that's already in my frame?
Standard strike supplied is the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip length and no box. If your frame is already prepped for a 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike you can reuse the cutout; the lip length is what to check against your frame reveal, since a 1-3/16 inch lip is measured from the strike centerline and a deep reveal needs a longer lip ordered instead.
12) Can I use my existing SFIC or non-Schlage cylinders in a Schlage ND lock?
Yes. Three spring cage sets cover all Schlage cylinder formats plus eight competitive cylinder formats, and the BD and LD options ship less cylinder so you can install your own core. One caveat worth knowing: the beyond-Grade-1 numbers Schlage publishes apply with Schlage cylinders (conventional, FSIC and SFIC). With non-Schlage cylinders the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 but performance may be below that of the Schlage cylinder build.
13) What does Vandlgard actually change on this lock, and is it worth it in a school corridor?
On a Vandlgard model the outside lever free-rotates up and down when the lock is locked instead of holding rigid. That keeps abusive force off the chassis, which is the failure mode in high-traffic corridors where students hang on levers. The ND chassis is already tested to 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque, 1,600 lbs offset lever pull against pry bars, 100 vertical lever impacts, and 16 million cycles with near zero droop and no set screws or O-rings. Vandlgard is what stops the lever itself from being the weak point.
14) Which lever and finish should I pick to match the rest of my building's hardware?
Nine lever designs are offered: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Finishes run 605 Bright Brass, 606 Satin Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 622 Matte Black, 625 Bright Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome, 626AM Satin Chrome Antimicrobial and 643E Aged Bronze. For fleet standardization, ND trim suites with Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks and with Von Duprin exit devices, so you can run the same lever design across classroom doors and exit device trim.
15) What should I use on the storage and utility doors in the same building if the ND98 is on the classrooms?
For doors that stay locked with key entry only, a storeroom function lever works. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The ND98 keeps both levers fixed with entry by key in either lever, which is what the classroom security function requires but is more lock than a closet door needs.
16) For a patient room or behavioral health door, is the ND98 the right lock or should I look at an asylum function?
An asylum function is the one specified for those doors. The Dexter C1000 Series asylum lock is a Grade 1 cylindrical lock with an ANSI F87 asylum function for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. The Schlage ND98 carries an ANSI F110 classroom security function, where the inside lever is always free for immediate egress - the opposite of what an asylum opening calls for.
17) What is the difference between the ND98 and an office or entrance lever like the Hager 2525?
The Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty entrance/office lever. Those are set up for an occupant to secure a single office. The Schlage ND98 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom security lock with a key cylinder in both levers, made for a room that has to be locked down quickly from the inside without opening the door.
18) I want an electronic classroom lock instead of a keyed one. What are my options?
For a credential or code-based opening, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 electrified cylindrical lever lock operating on 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock. The Schlage ND98 is a mechanical lock with no electronic components, keyed with a cylinder in each lever.
19) Is there a lower-cost classroom lever if Grade 1 is more than my opening needs?
The ND is a heavy duty Grade 1 commercial lock, which is what you want on a school corridor door. For lighter traffic, the Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and the same 2-3/4 inch backset, so it drops into the same latch prep. Cal-Royal's AG05 is the Grade 2 storeroom equivalent on 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors if the room should always stay locked instead.
20) What is the lock body made of, and is there an option for a healthcare setting?
Construction is zinc and steel, rated heavy duty commercial. For healthcare, the 626AM Satin Chrome Antimicrobial finish is offered on the same lock, which is the usual pick for patient room and clinic corridors where touch surfaces matter.
21) Will a Grade 3 residential leverset work on the same doors as the ND98?
For commercial openings, no. The Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance/office lever and the Callan Artino entrance leverset are Grade 3, and the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever is Grade 3 for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Schlage ND98 is a commercial Grade 1 heavy duty lock built from zinc and steel with a classroom security function - the grade separation matters where a facility spec or an institutional traffic count is involved.
22) I need matching inactive trim on a paired classroom door. Does the ND98 cover that?
The ND98 is an active keyed lockset, not dummy trim. For the inactive leaf, the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim is a Grade 1 non-keyed heavy duty cylindrical lever, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever. Both match the Grade 1 heavy duty level of the ND98 in a fixed pull-only trim.
