Schlage NDEB Grade 1 ENGAGE Series Wireless Cylindrical Lock

The Schlage NDE mobile enabled wireless cylindrical lock extends electronic access control deeper into the building beyond traditional perimeter and high security openings. NDE locks operate in offline or No-Tour mode or as a networked lock with periodic check-ins or real-time management.

The open architecture design allows the NDE to be managed by Allegion software or integrated into popular physical access control systems through the PACS Alliance program. This lets customers choose the system that fits their requirements and move to a fully networked solution at any time.

Schlage NDEB locks are compatible with a wide range of mobile, smart, and proximity credential technologies and operate in storeroom, office, privacy, or apartment functions using the interior push button with indication.

NDE works within existing network architecture and can coexist in the same EAC system as other wireless locks including Schlage Control, AD-400, and LE.

Schlage Electronics NDEBP RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What door thickness does the Schlage NDEB wireless lock fit, and will it work on a 1-3/8 inch door?
The NDEB fits doors from 1-5/8 to 2 inches thick, so a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door is right in the middle of the range. It will not work on a 1-3/8 inch door, which is the common older interior thickness. If that is the opening you are working on, the Kwikset 912TNL SmartCode electronic lever covers 1-3/8 to 2 inches, and the Lockey E985 and E995 electronic keypad lever locks cover 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches. Measure the door leaf before ordering rather than assuming, because a hollow metal door in an older building is frequently 1-3/8.
2) Does the Schlage NDE lock come with a cylinder, or do I have to supply my own core?
Depends which cylinder option you order, and three of the four ship without a core. B is prepped for a 6-pin small format interchangeable core and comes less core. J is full size IC, also less core. L is less cylinder entirely. P is the conventional cylinder option. If your building is already keyed on an SFIC system, order B and drop your own core in so the lock joins the existing key system. Order P and the lock arrives keyed with two keys. Any of the less-core options means the core is a separate line item you need to add to the order or pull from stock.
3) Can the Schlage NDEB run without a gateway, or does every lock need to be networked?
It runs either way, and that is the main reason people pick the NDE. In No-Tour or offline mode there is no infrastructure at all, and credential updates ride to the lock on the cardholder's own credential. You can also push updates from a mobile device standing at the lock, or let the lock pull updates automatically once a day over a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi access point. Add an ENGAGE Gateway and the lock goes real time over RS-485 to an access control panel or IP to a host, with wake-up on radio so it answers a host command in under five seconds. Gateway range is up to 30 feet in typical building environments, so plan on a site survey with the ENGAGE Test Kit before committing to gateway locations. You can start offline and move to networked later without changing the lock.
4) Will the Schlage NDEB tie into the access control system we already run, or does it lock us into Allegion software?
Open architecture. The NDE can be managed by Allegion software or integrated into a third party physical access control system through the PACS Alliance program, so you pick the head end. It also coexists in the same EAC system as other Schlage wireless hardware, including Schlage Control, AD-400 and LE, which matters if you are extending an existing deployment rather than starting clean. On the network side it is 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) with WPA2, WPA, WEP and 802.1x, TLS 1.2 and 256-bit AES, which is what your IT group will want to see before they approve it on the building network. Note that wake-up on radio through the gateway requires the PACS provider's system.
5) Is the Schlage NDE wireless lock approved for a fire rated door and does it meet ADA?
The NDEB carries UL 10C, the positive pressure fire door test standard, along with UL 294 for access control system units. It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000 Grade 1, the heavy duty commercial cylindrical grade, plus A156.25-2013 for indoor and outdoor electrified hardware, CSA C22.2 No. 205-M1983 and FCC Part 15. For accessibility it meets ADA and ICC ANSI A117.1, helped by the lever operation, since a lever is what satisfies the no-tight-grasping requirement. That set covers most institutional and code-driven specs on stair, corridor and cross-corridor openings.
6) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Schlage NDEB lock?
No handing to call out. The NDEB is non-handed, so one part number works on a left hand or right hand opening and you can stock a single configuration for a whole building instead of splitting inventory. That also means a lock pulled off one door can be moved to another with the opposite swing without any conversion.
7) Which lock functions does the Schlage NDEB support, and can I change the function after it is installed?
Storeroom, office, privacy and apartment, all selected at the interior push button, which carries an indicator so someone inside can see the state. One lock covers all four, so a tenant unit set to apartment function and a supply room set to storeroom are the same part number. That is the practical difference from a mechanical lockset, where the function is built into the chassis and changing it means changing the lock.
8) The spec calls for a classroom intruder function. Does the Schlage NDEB cover that or do I need a different lock?
The Schlage NDEB operates in storeroom, office, privacy, or apartment function using the interior push button with indication. For a classroom intruder opening, the TownSteel XCE-9000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty electronic classroom intruder cylindrical lockset with keypad for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inch, and the TownSteel FCE-4000 is a Grade 1 RFID electronic intruder classroom cylindrical lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors. If the room needs classroom function without the intruder feature, the TownSteel FCE-2000 is a Grade 1 standalone motorized cylindrical lockset with RFID technology for 1-3/4 inch doors.
9) What other Grade 1 cylindrical lock reads Bluetooth credentials besides the Schlage NDEB?
The CENTRIOS CEB100 is the closest Bluetooth peer in the cylindrical class: a Grade 1 smart Bluetooth cylindrical lock built around a privacy function. The Schlage NDEB is a wider-scope device. It reads Bluetooth and NFC mobile credentials along with smart and proximity cards, runs storeroom, office, privacy, or apartment function from the interior push button with indication, and carries 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi plus BLE 4.2 so it can run No-Tour offline, check in daily over Wi-Fi, or report in real time through an ENGAGE Gateway. If the opening only needs a phone to open a private room, the CEB100 covers it; if it has to report into an access control system, that reporting path is the NDEB's.
10) I do not want to manage credentials in software. What standalone keypad lock works instead of the Schlage NDEB?
Three standalone keypad options sit alongside it. The Alarm Lock Trilogy T2 DL2700 is a Grade 1 standalone electronic cylindrical lock with a digital keypad and 100 user codes, and it is IC/SFIC compatible. The TownSteel XCE-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty electronic cylindrical lockset with keypad in a classroom function. The Accentra nexTouch NTB613 is a Grade 1 cylindrical keypad lock with pushbutton entry. All three are programmed at the door. The Schlage NDEB is the other model: up to 5,000 users and up to 2,000 audit events administered through ENGAGE, by mobile device at the lock, by Wi-Fi access point, or in real time through a gateway.
11) The door measures 1-3/8 inch thick. What lock do I use instead of the Schlage NDEB?
The Schlage NDEB fits doors 1-5/8 to 2 inch, so a 1-3/8 inch door needs a different body. On the electronic side, the Lockey E985 electronic keypad lever with remote control and key override and the Lockey E995 electronic keypad lever with remote control and battery power both cover 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch, and the Kwikset 912TNL ZW500 SmartCode with Z-Wave covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch. Mechanically, the Dorma C853 entry keyed single cylinder lever is Grade 1 for 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch, and the Cal-Royal CAL20 Grade 1 extra heavy duty privacy lock covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch.
12) We already have power wired to the door. Is there a cylindrical lock that runs on 12 or 24 VDC instead of batteries like the Schlage NDEB?
Yes. The SDC Electra 7200 Series is a solenoid controlled cylindrical lock with dual voltage 12/24VDC for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inch, so the access control panel drives the lock directly over the wire already in the frame. The Schlage NDEB is the battery path: 4 AA batteries with up to 2 years of life, and it carries the credential reader and decision at the door, linking to a host through BLE, a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi access point, or an ENGAGE Gateway using RS-485 to an ACP or IP to host. Wired means no battery service and a power transfer hinge; wireless means no wire pull.
13) Will a replacement lock drop into the frame prep the Schlage NDEB uses?
Check the strike before anything else. The Schlage NDEB uses an ANSI strike with DPS, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch with a 1-3/16 inch lip, which is the standard ANSI frame cutout plus a door position switch. The Stanley QCL150 entry lever comes with an ASA strike 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch and a square 2-3/4 inch backset latch, so it lands in the same frame prep. The Stanley QCL200 cylindrical lock is supplied keyed different with an SC keyway and a 118F ANSI strike measuring 1-1/8 by 2-3/4 inch, which is the smaller T-strike cutout and will not fill an ANSI prep without a filler or a frame modification.
14) Will the Schlage NDEB drop into my existing ANSI strike prep, or does the frame need work?
The standard strike is an ANSI strike with door position sensing, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the same face size as the ANSI/ASA strike prep already cut into most commercial hollow metal frames, so on a retrofit the frame cutout typically matches and you are reusing the existing prep. The door position sensor is built into that strike, which is what gives you door ajar and forced door reporting without adding a separate contact in the frame.
15) What credentials will the Schlage NDE lock read, and how fast does it respond?
Bluetooth and NFC mobile credentials off a phone, plus smart cards and proximity cards, so you can run mixed populations on the same door while a campus migrates from prox to mobile. Smart and prox reads verify in a second or less; mobile depends on the phone. Feedback at the door is an LED in red, amber and green, with an audible indicator that is field configurable if you need it silent on a patient room or a dorm corridor. The reader itself is 2.4 GHz Bluetooth Low Energy version 4.2.
16) How many users and how much audit history will one Schlage NDE lock hold?
Up to 5,000 users and up to 2,000 audit events per lock. For most applications that means the credential list is not the limiting factor, even on a large multi-family or campus deployment. Audit depth is the thing to think about on a high traffic door: 2,000 events on a busy corridor fills faster than on a supply closet, so if you need continuous history on that opening, put it on a gateway or Wi-Fi schedule so events are pulled off the lock regularly rather than relying on a manual visit.
17) Can a Schlage NDEB go on an exterior door, and how does it handle cold?
Yes, it is rated for exterior use down to -31 F and up to 151 F (-35 to 66 C), and it is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.25 for indoor and outdoor electrified hardware. Operating humidity is 0 to 100 percent non-condensing. The interior side is rated 32 to 120 F (0 to 49 C), so the lock is built for the exterior face taking the weather while the electronics inside stay in a conditioned range. Substrate is zinc and steel.
18) What powers the Schlage NDE lock and how often will my staff be changing batteries?
Four AA batteries, up to two years of life. No wiring to the door, no power transfer hinge, no transformer, which is the whole point of a wireless lock on an interior opening. Budget the change-out as routine PM rather than an emergency: on a networked lock the battery status comes back through the system, and running it offline means you are on a schedule instead. If you would rather have the lock on building power and controlled by a panel, the SDC Electra 7200 Series is a solenoid controlled cylindrical lock on dual voltage 12/24VDC, though it fits 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors only.
19) I just want a keypad lock on one door with no software or network. Is the NDEB overkill?
Probably, yes. The NDE is built around credentials and a management platform, so if you only need a code on a single opening, a standalone keypad lock is the simpler buy. The Alarm Lock Trilogy T2 DL2700 is a Grade 1 standalone electronic cylindrical lock with a digital keypad, 100 user codes and IC/SFIC compatibility, fitting 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. The Alarm Lock T3 DL3075 is another Grade 1 keypad lock with audit trail. The BEST 9KZ EZ Series adds key override. Where the NDE earns its place is the opposite situation: many doors, changing populations, mobile or card credentials, and a system of record you want the doors reporting into.
20) Can I match the Schlage NDE locks to the levers and finishes already on my other doors?
Nine lever styles are offered: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Finishes run bright brass (605), satin brass (606), satin bronze (612), satin nickel (619), matte black (622), bright chrome (625), satin chrome (626), satin chrome antimicrobial (626AM) and aged bronze (643E). Satin chrome 626 is the usual commercial default, so an electronic opening can be made to read the same as the mechanical locksets down the corridor. The 626AM antimicrobial version of satin chrome is the one to look at for patient rooms, clinics and food service areas where touch surfaces get specified.
21) Is the Schlage NDEB heavy duty enough for a high traffic commercial corridor?
It is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial cylindrical lockset, certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000 Grade 1, with a zinc and steel substrate. Grade 1 is the top of the three BHMA grades for bored locks and the level normally specified for institutional and high traffic openings, as against Grade 2 for lighter commercial duty. That puts the NDE in the same duty class as the mechanical Grade 1 locksets it would sit alongside, so you are not stepping down in mechanical strength to gain the electronics.
22) Our facility needs a stored audit trail on the door. Which keypad lock compares with the Schlage NDEB on that?
The Alarm Lock T3 DL3075 is a Grade 1 electronic cylindrical lock with audit trail and keypad access, read at the door. The Schlage NDEB holds up to 2,000 audit events and up to 5,000 users, and the events come off the lock three different ways: collected by a mobile device at the door, pulled automatically each day through a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi access point, or streamed live through an ENGAGE Gateway back to a host over RS-485 to an ACP or IP. The decision is whether someone walks the doors to pull records or the records arrive on their own.
23) What electronic cylindrical lock fits a door thicker than 2 inches?
The Schlage NDEB is built for 1-5/8 to 2 inch doors, so an oversized leaf calls for a different body. The SDC E75 Series battery-powered electronic cylindrical lockset with keypad access control covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/8 inch. If the opening does not need electronics, the Dorma C853 entry keyed single cylinder lever and the Dorma C150 Grade 1 heavy-duty entry/office cylindrical lock both reach 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch. Measure the leaf at the lock prep before ordering, since the thickness range is the first thing that rules a body in or out.
24) We key the whole property to small format interchangeable cores. Which comparable locks take an SFIC or ship less core like the Schlage NDEB?
The Schlage NDEB is ordered as B for 6-pin SFIC prep less core, J for FSIC less core, L for less cylinder, or P for a conventional cylinder, so the existing core system carries straight over. Among the peers, the Alarm Lock Trilogy T2 DL2700 is a Grade 1 standalone electronic cylindrical lock that is IC/SFIC compatible. On the mechanical side, the Marks USA 175RF is a small format IC storeroom clutched lever supplied less core with a 2-3/4 inch backset and ANSI strike, the Marks USA 195RAB is a Grade 1 Survivor Series entry clutched lever supplied less core, and the Stanley QCL150 entry lever ships less cylinder with a square 2-3/4 inch backset latch.
25) Is there an electronic cylindrical lock with a mechanical key override to compare against the Schlage NDEB?
The BEST 9KZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad cylindrical lock with a key override function, so a mechanical key opens the door if the electronics or the code path fails. The Schlage NDEB gives the same fallback through its cylinder choice: order it P for a conventional cylinder, B for 6-pin SFIC prep less core, or J for FSIC less core and the key works the lock; order it L less cylinder and there is no mechanical override at all. That single character on the part number decides whether the door has a key path, so settle it before the order goes in.
26) Only a few doors need credentials. What mechanical Grade 1 keyed lever pairs with a Schlage NDEB rollout?
The Schlage NDEB is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lock certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000. To hold the same grade on the openings that do not need electronics, the Dorma C853 is a Grade 1 entry keyed single cylinder lever in the C800 Series for doors 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch, the Dorma C150 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty cylindrical lock in entry/office function over the same thickness range, and the Marks USA 195RAB is a Grade 1 Survivor Series entry clutched lever supplied less core, which keys into the same core system the NDEB B or J option uses.
27) For a restroom door, do I need the Schlage NDEB or is there a simpler privacy lock?
The Schlage NDEB does run a privacy function, set at the interior push button with indication, and that is worth it only if the restroom needs to sit inside the same credential and audit system as the rest of the building. For a plain occupied-indicator restroom, the Cal-Royal CAL20 is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty privacy lock for doors 1-3/8 to 2 inch, the Alarm Lock Trilogy 4100 is a Grade 1 electronic cylindrical lock in privacy function with a keypad for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, and the Orca OCL240 is a Grade 2 medium duty privacy cylindrical lockset.
28) Can I put a Dorma C501 dummy lever on the inactive leaf in place of a Schlage NDEB?
No, they do different jobs. The Dorma C501 is a Grade 2 single dummy trim keyless lever lockset for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch, and the Orca OCL2170 is a Grade 2 medium duty half dummy lever. A dummy is a pull only, with no latch and no bolt behind it, so it holds nothing. The Schlage NDEB is a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lock with a latch and an ANSI strike with DPS, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch with a 1-3/16 inch lip. Use a dummy where the leaf is held by flush bolts and the NDEB where the leaf actually latches.
29) How does the Kwikset SmartCode 912TNL Z-Wave lever compare with the Schlage NDEB for a commercial building?
They are built to different standards and different radios. The Kwikset 912TNL ZW500 is a SmartCode series electronic Tustin lever with Z-Wave technology, keyed one side, for doors 1-3/8 to 2 inch, and it reports to a Z-Wave hub. The Schlage NDEB is a commercial device certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000 Grade 1 and A156.25-2013 indoor/outdoor, with UL 294 and UL 10C, and it communicates over Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with 256-bit AES and TLS 1.2. If the opening is a labeled fire door or the drawing calls out Grade 1 and UL 294, the NDEB is the one that answers the spec.
30) Is there a keyless lock with no batteries to maintain instead of the Schlage NDEB?
Two mechanical pushbutton options remove the battery entirely. The Lockey 1600 is a heavy duty mechanical keyless knob lock with an adjustable backset for doors 1-1/8 to 2 inch, and the Lockey 2830 is a mechanical pushbutton keyless knob lock with an auto-locking passage function over the same 1-1/8 to 2 inch range. Both are knob trim. The Schlage NDEB runs on 4 AA batteries with up to 2 years of life and uses a lever, and it carries ADA and ICC ANSI A117.1, which matters on any opening where a knob will not satisfy the accessibility requirement.
31) Half the doors on the floor only need to latch. What passage lever goes alongside a Schlage NDEB order?
The Schlage NDEB is a keyed Grade 1 lever lock and there is no reason to spend its electronics on a corridor or closet door. The Marks USA 195N is a Grade 1 Survivor Series passage lever with an American lever and is ADA compliant, the Cal-Royal CAL30 is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty passage lock for doors 1-3/8 to 2 inch, and the Orca OCL210 is a Grade 2 medium duty passage cylindrical lockset. The NDEB itself carries ADA and ICC ANSI A117.1, so matching the passage doors to an ADA compliant lever keeps the floor consistent for accessibility review.
32) We need credential control on both sides of the door. How does that compare with the Schlage NDEB?
The Alarm Lock DL5200 is a double-sided electronic cylindrical lock with 100 user capacity and battery operation, for doors 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch, which suits an opening that must be controlled leaving as well as entering. The Schlage NDEB is a single-reader lock: up to 5,000 users, up to 2,000 audit events, credential verification under one second for smart and proximity cards, and function set at the interior push button with indication. If the requirement is only recording who came in, the NDEB carries the larger user list and the reporting path; if egress must be credentialed too, the DL5200 is the body that does it.
