1) Will the Schlage PM026 mortise lock fit a door thicker than 1-3/4 inches?
Standard thickness for the PM026 is 1-3/4 inches, and it will go as thin as 1-3/8 inches. It can be built for doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick, but anything over 1-3/4 inches has to be specified at time of order along with the lock position in the door, and that oversize build is only available in the EE configuration. Don't order a standard unit and expect to shim it into a 2 inch door.
2) What backset does the Schlage PM026 mortise lock use, and will it work in an existing mortise pocket?
Backset is 2-3/4 inches, and that is the only backset offered on the PM Series, so a pocket cut for a 2-3/8 inch backset is not a candidate. The case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch (113 x 154 x 25 mm). One thing to watch on retrofit: PM Series case and cover holes differ from Schlage L Series, so pulling an L Series body out does not guarantee the PM drops straight in.
3) Do I have to order the Schlage PM026 handed, or can I reverse it in the field?
Handing is field reversible on the PM026, so one part number covers left and right hand openings. For a property manager stocking spares across a building, that means fewer SKUs sitting on the shelf.
4) What cylinder options do I specify when ordering the Schlage PM026?

The PM026 is a passage-function lock, so it is the wrong call if you need the outside to stay locked. The PM Series itself carries 26 functions plus four mortise deadbolt functions, so the same trim and finish can be had in the function you need.
