1) How does the Schlage PM056 entrance/office lock with automatic unlocking actually work day to day?
The PM056 has a key cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside. Turning the inside thumbturn (or the key from outside) makes the outside lever inoperative; the key outside unlocks the outside lever and retracts the latchbolt. Rotating the thumbturn back unlocks the outside lever, and so does turning the inside lever. The part that matters for an office: closing the door also unlocks it, so nobody gets locked out after stepping into the hall. Inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
2) Will the PM056 mortise lock fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or a thick 2 inch door?
Standard is 1-3/4 inches, with 1-3/8 inches the minimum. The case will go into doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick, but anything over 1-3/4 inches has to be specified at order along with the position in the door, and that is available in EE only. Backset is 2-3/4 inches with no alternative offered, so the mortise pocket has to be cut for that.
3) Does the Schlage PM056 need to be ordered left hand or right hand?
No handing call is needed. The PM056 chassis is field reversible, so one lock covers either swing and you set the hand on site. That is useful for a property manager buying a few spares to cover a whole building.
4) Do I get a cylinder with the Schlage PM056, or do I have to supply my own?
That depends on the cylinder option you pick. Only the P option arrives with a conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5. The B option is less SFIC, J is less FSIC and L is less a conventional 6-pin, meaning you supply the core or cylinder to match your existing key system. T comes with an FSIC construction core for use during the build, swapped out for permanent cores at turnover.
5) What is the closest equivalent to the Schlage PM056 entrance/office mortise lock from another manufacturer?
