1) Will the Schlage PM056 mortise lock fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or a thick 2-1/4 inch door?
Standard door thickness for the PM056 is 1-3/4 inches, with 1-3/8 inches the minimum, and the case will go into doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick. Above 1-3/4 inches you have to specify the actual door thickness and the position of the lock in the door when ordering, and that thick-door option comes in the EE configuration only.
2) What backset does the Schlage PM056 need, and can I use it on a door prepped for 2-3/8 inch?
2-3/4 inches only. The PM056 mortise case is not offered in a 2-3/8 inch backset, so a door with a 2-3/8 inch bored prep will not work without re-prepping for a mortise pocket. If your existing openings are on a 2-1/2 inch mortise backset, that is a different platform (Baldwin's 6301 and 6310 mortise bodies, for example, are 2-1/2 inch backset).
3) Do I have to order the Schlage PM056 left hand or right hand?
No handing to specify. The PM056 is field reversible, so one lock covers both hands and you can flip it on site. That is useful for a property manager keeping a small number of spares for a building with doors swinging both ways.
4) Does the mortise pocket cut for a Schlage L Series lock take a PM Series lock?
Not directly. Schlage states that PM and L Series case and cover holes differ, so an L Series pocket is not a straight swap for a PM case.
