1) How does the Schlage PM056 entrance/office function actually work day to day?
The PM056 is an entrance/office lock with automatic unlocking. Key cylinder outside, thumbturn inside, latchbolt with a deadlocking auxiliary latch. The outside lever is locked either by the outside key or by turning the inside thumbturn. Key from outside unlocks the outside lever and retracts the latch. Rotating the inside thumbturn unlocks the outside lever, and turning the inside lever retracts the latch and unlocks the outside lever. Closing the door also unlocks it, which is what prevents somebody getting locked out of an office they just stepped out of. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
2) Will the Schlage PM056 mortise lock fit a 2 inch thick door?
Yes, with a note on the order. Standard is 1-3/4 inch (44 mm), minimum is 1-3/8 inch (35 mm), and the lock fits doors up to 2-1/2 inches. Above 1-3/4 inch you have to specify the door thickness and the position of the lock in the door, and that thickness range is available in EE only.
3) Does the PM056 come with a cylinder, or do I order it less cylinder for my own keyway?
You choose. Five cylinder options are offered: P for a conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5, T for an FSIC construction core, and three less-cylinder options - B less SFIC, J less FSIC, and L less conventional 6-pin. If your building is already on an SFIC or FSIC key system, order the matching less-cylinder option and drop in your own core.
4) What size mortise pocket does the Schlage PM Series case need, and will it drop into an existing Schlage L Series prep?
The PM case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch (113 x 154 x 25 mm). Important for a retrofit: the PM and L Series case and cover holes differ, so an existing L Series installation is not a straight swap even though both are Schlage mortise locks. Spacing runs 3-7/8 inches (98 mm) lever to cylinder and 2-11/16 inches (68 mm) lever to thumbturn hub, so check those against the existing face holes before you commit.
5) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to a Schlage PM056 entrance/office mortise lock?

No. Handing is field reversible on the PM Series chassis, so one lock covers left and right hand openings and you can flip it on site rather than stocking both.
