The PM Series offers 26 functions, including three electrified, and four mortise deadbolt functions, all made to meet Schlage’s rigorous quality standards. Schlage PM081P LATA 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What door thickness does the Schlage PM081 mortise lock fit?
The PM081 is built around a 1-3/4 inch door as standard, with 1-3/8 inch as the minimum. The case will go into doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick, but over 1-3/4 inches you have to specify the door thickness and the lock's position in the door, and that is available in EE only.
2) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand Schlage PM081?
No. The PM081 mortise lock is field reversible, so one lock covers either hand and you set it on site. That is useful for a property manager stocking spares across a building instead of keeping both hands on the shelf.
3) How does a storeroom function lock behave, and is it right for a mechanical or stock room?
Storeroom function means the outside lever is always fixed and the door is always locked from outside; a key retracts the latch for entry. Inside, the lever is always free, so anyone in the room can get out without a key. That is the standard choice for stock rooms, electrical and mechanical closets, and IT rooms where you never want the door left unlocked. If you want a room that can be left unlocked during the day, use an office or entrance function instead, such as the Cal-Royal NM8050 office/entrance mortise lockset.
4) Which cylinder options does the Schlage PM081 come with, and can I use my own SFIC cores?
Five cylinder choices are offered: B less SFIC, J less FSIC, L less conventional 6-pin cylinder, P conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5, and T FSIC construction core. If your building is already on small format interchangeable core, order the B option and install your own cores. If you key your own conventional cylinders, take the L. The P option arrives with a 6-pin conventional cylinder keyed 5 if you just want it working out of the box.
5) Will a Schlage PM081 drop into a door prepped for a Schlage L Series mortise lock?
Not as a straight swap. The PM case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch, and Schlage states that PM and L Series case and cover holes differ, so the mounting and cover hole pattern is not the same. Plan on re-prepping the door or check the PM Series template before ordering for a retrofit.
6) What is a direct alternative to the Schlage PM081 storeroom mortise lock from another manufacturer?
Two Grade 1 storeroom mortise locks match the PM081 function directly: the Accentra 8805FL from the 8800 Series, supplied with the Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080, a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for doors 1-3/4 inches thick. The PM081 itself is a Grade 1 keyed storeroom mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset and field reversible handing, ordered with or without a conventional 6-pin, FSIC or SFIC cylinder.
7) I need a classroom function instead of storeroom in a mortise lock - what should I order?
The PM081 is a storeroom function lock, so for a classroom opening look at the Corbin Russwin ML2003 Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, or the Cal-Royal NM8070 Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, also for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both keep the same mortise pocket approach while giving you key control of the outside lever.
8) Is the Baldwin 6310 mortise lock a drop-in replacement for a Schlage PM081?
No. The Baldwin 6310 entrance/storeroom mortise lock body uses a 2-1/2 inch backset, while the PM081 is built on a 2-3/4 inch backset only. The latch centerline and the mortise pocket location differ, so it is not a same-prep swap even though the function description is similar. The Baldwin is offered knob by knob as the 6310 and lever by lever as the 6310190RRLS in right hand reverse.
9) I need the storeroom function to release electrically for access control - what replaces the PM081?
The PM081 is a mechanical lock with no electrical option. The Command Access ML190 is a heavy duty motorized mortise lock in storeroom function with field selectable fail safe or fail secure operation on 24VDC, and the BEST 45HW is a wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V or 24V. Both keep the storeroom behavior while letting an access control panel release the outside lever.
10) Can I match the PM081 mortise locks to the tubular locks on my lighter interior doors?
Yes. The PM Series shares lever and rose styles with the Schlage PT Series tubular locks, so a Latitude lever on a mortise-prepped corridor door matches a Latitude lever on a PT tubular door. The PM Series is also made to suite with other Allegion products for one key system and a consistent look across a building.
11) Is the PM081 heavy duty enough for a commercial building, and what grade is it?
The PM081 is a Grade 1 commercial mortise lock. The case is cold rolled steel with corrosion resistant zinc dichromate plating, and the latch is stainless steel. It was built for commercial real estate, retail, multifamily and hospitality traffic.
12) What other Grade 1 storeroom mortise locks could I use instead of the Schlage PM081?
Two direct alternatives we carry: the Accentra 8805FL, a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock from the 8800 Series with the Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080, a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option and a 1-3/4 inch door thickness. The Schlage is the one to pick if you are standardizing on a Schlage or Allegion key system across the building.
13) I need a storeroom door with access control, not a keyed mortise lock. What should I look at?
The PM081 is entirely mechanical, with no electronic option on it. For a credentialed or keypad storeroom door, the Command Access ML190 Series is a motorized mortise lock with storeroom function, field selectable EL/EU operation and 24VDC power. If you want standalone rather than wired, the Schlage CO-100 mortise lock is a Grade 1 keypad unit for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override.
14) My frame has a square corner strike cutout. What strike ships with the PM081?
The standard strike supplied is the Schlage 10-072, a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip length, boxed. The ANSI curved lip strike in the same 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 footprint is also a catalogued standard, and a dust box is included either way.
15) Are there other functions in the Schlage PM Series if storeroom is not what my door needs?
Yes, the PM Series carries 26 functions, including three electrified functions and four mortise deadbolt functions. So if you need classroom, office, privacy or passage on other doors in the same building, you can stay in the PM Series and keep the same Latitude lever, rose and finish across every opening.
16) What mortise lock do I use for a restroom or bedroom door instead of the PM081?
The PM081 is a keyed storeroom lock, which is not a privacy function. For a restroom or bedroom, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches. The Hager shares the PM081's 2-3/4 inch backset, so the latch centerline in the door matches.
17) If the door does not need to be keyed, what is a simpler mortise lock than the PM081?
For an unkeyed opening, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S and 3810E are Grade 1 passage mortise locks on a 2-3/4 inch backset, offered with rose trim and escutcheon trim respectively for doors 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inches. The PM081 is keyed and takes a cylinder, so passage functions remove the cylinder from the order entirely.
18) Can I substitute an electronic mortise lock for the PM081 on the same opening?
Electronic mortise locks are a different install and a different ordering path. The PM081 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock. If credential access is the goal, the Schlage Electronics CO-100-MS keypad mortise lock is Grade 1 for 1-3/4 inch doors, the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 RFID mortise lockset, and the Dormakaba E-Plex 5086 is a Grade 1 pushbutton and card mortise lock. These need power or battery service and programming, which a mechanical storeroom lock does not.
19) What is the difference between the PM081 and a mortise lock body sold without trim, like the BEST 45H?
The PM081 ships as a complete lever lockset with the Latitude lever and a choice of A, C or D rose or N escutcheon, plus the 10-072 ANSI strike with box. The BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty mortise lock body in the 45H series with public entrance function and field reversible operation, and the 45HCAINL is a 45HCA lock body with intruder function - lock bodies, which you pair with separate trim. Choose the body-only route when you are replacing a case behind trim that stays on the door.
20) For a dormitory or corridor door, is the PM081 the right mortise lock?
The PM081 is a storeroom function with a latchbolt only and no deadbolt. For a dormitory corridor door where a resident needs to throw a deadbolt, the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. Use the PM081 where the door should stay secured at all times and open only by key from outside.
21) What mortise lock should I use instead of the PM081 in a behavioral health or ligature-resistant application?
The PM081 uses a standard Latitude lever, which is not a ligature-resistant trim. For those openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless arch trim, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant.
22) Does the Cal-Royal NM8050 do the same thing as the Schlage PM081?
No. The NM8050 is a Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, an office function where the outside lever can be left unlocked. The PM081 is a storeroom function, so the outside lever stays locked at all times and retracts only by key. Both are Grade 1 and both are built for 1-3/4 inch doors, but the office function is the wrong choice where the door must never be left unsecured.
23) Will an Emtek mortise entrance lockset work as a substitute for the PM081 on a commercial door?
The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are dummy function - decorative trim with no latch operation. The PM081 is a commercial keyed storeroom lock with an operating latchbolt. Use an Emtek dummy set only on an inactive leaf, never as a replacement for a working storeroom lock.
24) What mortise lock works for an aluminum storefront door where the PM081 will not fit?
The PM081 is a standard mortise case for 1-3/4 inch doors and is not a narrow stile product. For aluminum openings, the Alarm Lock DL1300NW Trilogy Networx wireless electronic mortise lock is made for Adams Rite deadlatches, the Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 is a wide stile electronic pushbutton mortise lock, and the Kaba Ilco BR Series is a glass door bottom rail lock. Confirm your stile width and existing deadlatch prep before ordering.
25) Does a PM Series mortise lock with a thumbturn meet ADA, and how far is the thumbturn from the lever?
The PM Series thumbturn style is ADA qualified. On thumbturn functions the spacing is 2-11/16 inches from lever to thumbturn hub. Note that PM081 itself is the storeroom function with cylinder, which has fixed outside trim and a free inside lever rather than a thumbturn.
26) Is a Sargent 4874 mortise deadbolt an alternative to the PM081 storeroom lock?
They do different jobs. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset - deadbolt only, with no lever or latch. The PM081 is a lever lockset with a latchbolt that the lever retracts. They share the 2-3/4 inch backset, so a 4874 is a companion for a separate deadbolt prep rather than a replacement for the lockset.
