Schlage PM092ELP SELA 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage PM092 electric mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door, and what about thicker doors?
1-3/4 inches (44 mm) is the standard door thickness for the PM Series mortise lock, with 1-3/8 inches (35 mm) the minimum. The case will go into doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick, but anything over 1-3/4 inches has to be specified at order along with the position in the door. Backset is 2-3/4 inches only, so the door and frame prep must match that.
2) Do I need to order a handed version of the PM092, or is it reversible in the field?
Handing is not an ordering decision here. The PM Series mortise case is field reversible, so the same lock covers left and right hand openings and you set it on site.
3) Should I order the PM092 fail safe or fail secure?
Both are offered, and the choice depends on what the opening has to do when power drops. Fail safe unlocks the outside lever on loss of power, which is what you want on an egress or access-controlled path that must release during an alarm. Fail secure keeps the outside lever locked when power is lost, which suits a storeroom, IT closet, or tenant space that must stay secure in an outage. Either way the inside lever retracts the latchbolt at all times for egress.
4) Does the PM092 use a mortise cylinder I supply, or does it come keyed?
You pick the cylinder prep when you order. Options are B (less SFIC), J (less FSIC), L (less conventional 6-pin cylinder), P (conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5 pins), or T (FSIC construction core). The three 'less' options let a locksmith drop in the building's existing keyway or core; the P option arrives with a conventional cylinder in place; T is for jobs that need construction keying before final cores are installed.
5) Can I replace an existing Schlage L Series mortise lock with a PM Series case in the same door?
Do not assume a straight swap. The PM Series case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch (113 x 154 x 25 mm), and Schlage notes that PM and L Series case and cover holes differ. The pocket may be fine, but the through-holes for the trim and cylinder are not the same, so plan on re-prepping the door faces.
6) What is the closest alternative to the Schlage PM092 electrified mortise lock if the opening needs field-selectable fail safe or fail secure from another manufacturer?
The Command Access ML190 series motorized mortise lock is the nearest peer: it is a heavy-duty storeroom function mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation running on 24VDC. The Schlage PM092 is also a storeroom function Grade 1 mortise lock offered in fail-safe and fail-secure builds on 12/24VDC. The BEST 45HW wired electromechanical mortise lock is another heavy duty 12V/24V option. Choose based on whether you want the electrification selectable in the field or specified at order.
7) If the door does not need electrification, what mechanical storeroom mortise lock can be used instead of the Schlage PM092?
For a purely mechanical storeroom opening, the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 series with the Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage PM092 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock as well, but it is built to be locked and unlocked electrically at the outside lever on 12/24VDC, which the mechanical models do not do.
8) Should I use a Schlage PM092 or a standalone keypad mortise lock for an access-controlled door?
The Schlage PM092 is an electrically locking/unlocking mortise lock that must be wired to a 12/24VDC supply and controlled by an access system. Standalone alternatives carry their own credential reader: the BEST 45HZ EZ series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override, the Alarm Lock DL3500CR is a Grade 1 electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes in classroom function, and the Schlage CO-100 is a Grade 1 heavy duty standalone electronic mortise lock with a keypad reader. Use the PM092 where the credential decision is made by a panel or reader elsewhere on the door.
9) Will the PM092 match the other Schlage hardware already on my building?
The PM Series is made to suite with other Allegion products, and it shares lever and rose styles with the Schlage PT Series tubular locks. So a property manager can run mortise locks on the heavy openings and tubular locks on the lighter interior doors and still have the same Selena lever and rose look throughout. Finishes offered are 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and 643E aged bronze.
10) Is the PM092 mortise lock rated for high traffic commercial openings?
It is a Grade 1 mortise lock built for commercial use, with a cold rolled steel case and corrosion resistant zinc dichromate plating. Schlage positions the Performance Series at commercial real estate, retail, multifamily and hospitality work, so apartment corridors, retail back-of-house and hotel service doors are within its intended range.
11) If I want a keypad or credential reader on the door instead of wiring to an access control panel, what should I look at?
The PM092 is a wired electric mortise lock with no reader of its own, so it needs a panel and power. For a standalone opening, the Schlage CO-100 mortise lock is a Grade 1 heavy duty keypad reader unit for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Schlage ENGAGE LEMD is a Grade 1 wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader. For a keypad with key override, the BEST 45HZ EZ Series is another route.
12) What is the difference between the Schlage PM092 and a Baldwin 6310 storeroom mortise lock?
The Baldwin 6310 is an entry/storeroom mortise lock body on a 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/8 inch and over, offered knob by knob, with the 6310190RRLS as a right hand reverse lever by lever build. The Schlage PM092 is a Grade 1 storeroom lever lockset on a 2-3/4 inch backset with field reversible handing, and it is electrified for 12/24VDC operation. The backset difference alone means the two are not drop-in swaps in an existing mortise pocket.
13) The PM092 is storeroom function - what do I order for a classroom or privacy opening instead?
Storeroom function on the Schlage PM092 keeps the outside lever locked with key access only. For a classroom opening, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch. For privacy, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with 2-3/4 inch backset.
14) Is a Dormakaba E-Plex or TownSteel RFID mortise lock a direct substitute for the Schlage PM092?
No. The Dormakaba E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 back-to-back pushbutton and card mortise lock and the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID, both of which read credentials at the lock itself. The Schlage PM092 carries no reader; it is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock whose outside lever is locked or unlocked by 12/24VDC from an external control, with an outside cylinder for key override. They solve the same door two different ways and are not interchangeable in a wiring or credential plan.
15) What mortise lock matches the PM092 for a passage or non-keyed opening in the same building?
Where a door needs no locking at all, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose trim on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors. The Schlage PM092 uses the same 2-3/4 inch backset and is also field reversible, so the door prep stays consistent across the two.
16) For a behavioral health or anti-ligature opening, what should I specify in place of a PM092 lever lockset?
A standard lever is not appropriate on anti-ligature openings. The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with ligature resistant arch trim, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant. The Schlage PM092 is a conventional lever lockset for commercial openings.
17) What wireless mortise lock would replace a hardwired PM092 if running power to the door is not practical?
The Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating, and the Alarm Lock DL1300NW is a Trilogy Networx wireless electronic mortise lock with a keypad for Adams Rite deadlatches. The Schlage PM092 requires a 12/24VDC feed to the lock to switch the outside lever, so where door wiring or a transfer hinge is not in the budget, the wireless units avoid that run.
18) How much room do I need between the lever and the cylinder when laying out the PM Series door prep?
Spacing on the PM Series case is 3-7/8 inches (98 mm) from lever to cylinder and 2-11/16 inches (68 mm) from lever to thumbturn hub. Use those against the template when checking whether an existing door prep lines up before you cut.
19) Can I order just a mortise lock body instead of a complete PM092 lockset?
Yes, if the trim is already on the door. The BEST 45H series is a heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function with field reversible operation, and the 45HCA intruder function lock body is another body-only option. The Schlage PM092 is supplied as a complete electrified lockset with a lever and a choice of A, C, D rose or N escutcheon trim.
