The PM Series offers 26 functions, including three electrified, and four mortise deadbolt functions, all made to meet Schlage’s rigorous quality standards. With popular levers and finish options, Schlage's full key system security line up, and its durable design, you can meet needs for both security and style. Schlage PM092ELP BRWA 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to order the Schlage PM092 handed, or can it be reversed in the field?
Handing is set in the field on the PM092, so one lock covers left and right hand openings. That makes it easier to stock a single part number for a building with mixed swings.
2) What door thickness does the Schlage PM092 electric mortise lock fit?
Standard is 1-3/4 inch (44 mm), and the PM Series case will go as thin as 1-3/8 inch (35 mm). Doors thicker than 1-3/4 inch up to 2-1/2 inch are possible, but you have to specify the door thickness and the lock position in the door when you order.
3) What is the difference between fail-safe and fail-secure on the PM092, and which should I pick?
Both are orderable options on the PM092. Fail-safe unlocks the outside lever when power is removed, which is what you use where egress or firefighter access through the opening has to be maintained on a power loss. Fail-secure keeps the outside lever locked when power drops, which is the usual choice for a stockroom, IT closet or tenant space where you do not want the door open during an outage. Either way the lock runs on 12 or 24VDC and the outside cylinder gives mechanical key override.
4) What backset does the Schlage PM Series mortise lock require?
2-3/4 inches, and that is the only backset offered on the PM Series. If your door is prepped for a 2-3/8 inch backset you are looking at a tubular lock prep, not a mortise pocket, so the PM will not go in without reworking the door.
5) Does the PM092 come with a cylinder, or do I order that separately?
Both routes exist. Order P and you get a conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5. Order T for an FSIC construction core. The B, J and L options come less cylinder, meaning less small format interchangeable core, less full size interchangeable core, or less conventional 6-pin, so you supply the core to match your existing key system.
6) Will the mortise pocket in my door fit the PM Series lock case?
The case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch (113 x 154 x 25 mm) and is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. One thing to watch on retrofits: PM Series case and cover holes differ from Schlage L Series, so an existing L Series pocket is not a straight swap for mounting.
7) If the opening does not need to be electrified, what mechanical storeroom mortise lock can I use instead of the Schlage PM092?
For a straight mechanical storeroom opening, the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 series with the Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy-duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors with an interchangeable core option. Both hold the storeroom function of the Schlage PM092 without the 12/24VDC electrified lever control.
8) Is there a wired electrified mortise lock alternative to the Schlage PM092 that runs on either 12V or 24V?
The BEST 45HW series wired electromechanical mortise lock is a heavy-duty wired mortise lock with 12V/24V operation, so it covers the same dual-voltage wiring situation the Schlage PM092 does at 12/24VDC. The PM092 is a Grade 1 storeroom-function lock with 2-3/4 inch backset and field reversible handing.
9) I want keypad access on the door instead of wiring back to a panel - what mortise lock replaces the Schlage PM092?
Standalone keypad mortise locks handle that without a panel connection. The BEST 45HZ EZ series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override, the Alarm Lock DL3500CR is a Grade 1 electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes in classroom function, and the Schlage CO-100 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty standalone electronic mortise lock with a keypad reader. The Schlage PM092 by contrast is controlled remotely at 12/24VDC through its electrified outside lever.
10) Can I match the PM092 trim to the other locks in my building?
The Broadway lever is the lever design on the PM092, and you choose A, C or D rose or the N escutcheon. Finishes are 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome and 643E aged bronze. Because the PM Series shares lever and rose styles with the Schlage PT Series tubular locks, you can carry the same look from mortise openings to tubular ones.
11) Is the Schlage PM092 Grade 1, and is it heavy enough for a retail or multifamily entry?
Grade 1 and built for commercial service, which is the top ANSI/BHMA durability tier for a mortise lockset. Schlage positions the Performance Series at commercial real estate, retail, multifamily and hospitality work. Levers are zinc, the latch and deadbolt are stainless steel, and the case is plated steel.
12) I need an electrified mortise lock but not access control at the door. Is the PM092 the right type?
Yes, that is exactly what it is. The outside lever locks and unlocks electrically at 12 or 24VDC from a card reader, keypad or release button mounted elsewhere, with a key cylinder outside for override. If you want the credential reader built into the lock itself instead, that is a different product class, for example the Schlage CO-100 standalone mortise lock with a keypad reader, or the wireless ENGAGE Series LEMD mortise lock.
13) What other electrified Grade 1 mortise locks could I use instead of the Schlage PM092?
Two close alternatives sit in the same wired, reader-controlled category. The BEST 45HW Series is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V or 24V. The Command Access ML190 Series is a motorized mortise lock at 24VDC with field selectable EL or EU operation, so fail-safe versus fail-secure is set at the door rather than chosen at order time, and it is listed with a storeroom function like the PM092.
14) Is the Schlage Electronics LEMD wireless mortise lock a substitute for the Schlage PM092?
They solve access control differently. The LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and mobile-enabled deadbolt with LED, carrying a 3 hour fire rating and ordered by hand - the Greenwich trim version is right hand. The PM092 is a hardwired Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock at 12/24VDC with field reversible handing, so it needs power and control wiring to the door but no credential reader at the lock.
15) The opening is a classroom, not a storeroom - what should I order instead of the Schlage PM092?
Go to a classroom-function mortise lock. The Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a heavy-duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID. The Schlage PM092 is built for storeroom function.
16) What looks like a Schlage PM092 substitute but will not secure the door?
Passage and dummy mortise products share the mortise case footprint but hold no keyed security. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock, the Hager 3810S and 3810E are Grade 1 passage mortise locks with 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Emtek 3102 Memphis and 3104 Hamilton are dummy mortise entrance locksets. The Schlage PM092 is keyed with an outside cylinder and storeroom function.
17) My doors measure 1-5/8 inch thick - which mortise locks fit if the Schlage PM092 is specified at 1-3/4 inch?
The Alarm Lock Trilogy mortise locks list a 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch door thickness range, including the DL2700CR Grade 1 classroom weatherproof unit, the DL3500CR Grade 1 classroom lock, and the DL4500 Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt. The Schlage PM092 is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors.
18) For a behavioral health or detention opening, what mortise lockset should I look at instead of the Schlage PM092 with a Broadway lever?
Ligature-resistant trim is the differentiator there. The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function, the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant. The Schlage PM092 uses a conventional Broadway lever.
19) Is the thumbturn on the Schlage PM Series ADA qualified?
The PM Series thumbturn style is ADA qualified, which matters on privacy and deadbolt functions in facilities held to accessible operating hardware. The PM092 itself is operated by lever trim, and levers meet the same no-tight-grasping expectation.
20) Do I need a full mortise lock like the Schlage PM092 if all the door requires is a keyed deadbolt?
No - deadbolt-only mortise bodies cover that. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the 2-3/4 inch backset of the Schlage PM092, and the Kaba Ilco 185 series is a no-handing mortise deadbolt. Neither carries a latchbolt or lever trim, where the PM092 is a lever-operated storeroom lock.
21) For a dormitory corridor door, is there a mortise lock better suited than the Schlage PM092?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty 7900 series mortise lock in dormitory exit function with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, which suits corridor and dormitory openings. The Schlage PM092 is a storeroom-function lock and can be ordered with A, C, or D rose or an N escutcheon.
22) Is the Dormakaba E-Plex 5086 an equivalent to the Schlage PM092?
Both are Grade 1 mortise locks, but the control method differs. The E-Plex E5086 is a back-to-back mortise lock in entry/egress function operated by electronic pushbutton and card credentials at the door, while the Schlage PM092 is a storeroom-function lock whose outside lever is electrically locked or unlocked at 12/24VDC from a remote source.
