The PM Series offers 26 functions, including three electrified, and four mortise deadbolt functions, all made to meet Schlage’s rigorous quality standards. With popular levers and finish options, Schlage's full key system security line up, and its durable design, you can meet needs for both security and style. They are made to suite with other Allegion products to present a quality, complete door hardware solution and provide a consistent user experience throughout your building or complex. Schlage PM092ELP LONA 613 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage PM092 mortise lock fit a 2-1/4 inch thick door?
Yes, with the door thickness specified on the order. The PM Series mortise case is built for 1-3/4 inch doors as standard, 1-3/8 inch minimum, and will go up to 2-1/2 inches thick. Anything over 1-3/4 inches has to be called out at order time along with the position of the lock in the door, and that oversize option is available EE only.
2) Does the PM092 electric mortise lock need handing specified when I order?
No. The PM Series mortise case is field reversible, so one lock covers left and right hand openings and the installer sets it on the job. That matters when a property manager is buying a batch for mixed openings, since you are not sorting LH from RH on delivery.
3) What is the difference between the fail-safe and fail-secure version of the Schlage PM092?
It decides what the outside lever does when power drops. Fail-safe unlocks the outside lever on power loss, so the opening is free, which is what you use on stair and egress doors tied to fire alarm release. Fail-secure keeps the outside lever locked when power is lost, so the door stays secure and you key in. Both are ordered as a Lock Function Option on the PM092, and the inside lever gives free egress either way since the latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side at all times.
4) Do I get a cylinder with the Schlage PM092, or do I have to buy one separately?
Depends which cylinder option you pick. Three of the five are less-cylinder prep: B comes less SFIC, J less FSIC, and L less a conventional 6-pin cylinder, so you supply the core to match your existing key system. P ships with a conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5, and T ships with an FSIC construction core for use during the build before permanent cores go in.
5) What size mortise pocket does the PM Series lock case need, and can I drop it into an existing Schlage L Series prep?
The PM case is 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch (113 x 154 x 25 mm) in cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. Be careful on the swap: Schlage states the PM and L Series case and cover holes differ, so an L Series prep is not a straight drop-in. Hub spacing on the PM is 3-7/8 inches lever to cylinder and 2-11/16 inches lever to thumbturn hub, which is what you check the door face prep against.
6) What is the closest equivalent to the Schlage PM092 electric mortise lock from another manufacturer?
The Command Access ML190 series motorized mortise lock is the nearest match. Like the PM092, it is a heavy-duty mortise lock in storeroom function built for electrified control, and it runs on 24VDC. The ML190 is specified with field selectable EL/EU operation, meaning fail safe or fail secure is chosen at the lock; the PM092 is ordered with the Fail-Safe or Fail-Secure option selected up front. The BEST 45HW wired electromechanical mortise lock is the other close peer, rated for 12V/24V operation the same way the PM092 accepts 12/24VDC.
7) If the opening does not need to be electrified, what mechanical mortise lock covers the same storeroom function?
The Accentra 8805FL from the 8800 series is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for doors 1-3/4 inch thick. Both give you the same keyed storeroom behavior as the PM092, which is also Grade 1 and 2-3/4 inch backset, without any wiring, power supply, or transfer hinge at the opening.
8) We want credential access at the door instead of running wire back to an access control panel. What should we use instead of the PM092?
The PM092 is a wired electric lock controlled by an external system at 12/24VDC. For a standalone or wireless door, the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating, and the Schlage CO-100-MS is a Grade 1 heavy duty standalone electronic mortise lock with a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both put the credential reader in the trim rather than relying on a reader and panel elsewhere.
9) Which finishes does the Schlage PM092 come in for matching the rest of a building's hardware?
Six: 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and 643E aged bronze. If you are standardizing an opening set, the PM Series mortise locks share lever and rose styles with the Schlage PT Series tubular locks, so corridor and office doors can carry the same Longitude lever look without matching mortise hardware everywhere.
10) Does the PM092 mortise lock have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt on the PM092. It is a latchbolt-only electrified storeroom lock, with the latchbolt retracted by lever from either side at all times. PM Series does offer four mortise deadbolt functions, and the case carries a 1 inch throw stainless deadbolt where the function includes one, but that is a different model within the series. For a standalone deadbolt, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
11) Can I order the PM092 with a different backset for a narrow stile door?
No. The PM Series is 2-3/4 inch backset only, so it needs a door stile deep enough to take that mortise pocket. For a narrow stile aluminum opening it is the wrong lock entirely, and you should be looking at a deadlatch-style product instead, such as the Kaba Ilco BR Series glass door bottom rail lock for storefront.
12) Is a keypad mortise lock like the Alarm Lock Trilogy a substitute for the PM092?
They solve different problems. The Alarm Lock DL3500CR is a Grade 1 electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes in classroom function for doors 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch thick, and the DL2700CR is a weatherproof Trilogy T2 classroom mortise lock in the same thickness range. Those manage access by code at the lock itself. The PM092 is a storeroom function lock whose outside lever is locked or unlocked electrically by a remote signal at 12/24VDC, so it belongs on a door controlled by an access system, card reader, or fire alarm interface rather than by codes entered at the door.
13) The door is a classroom, not a storeroom. What mortise lock should I order instead?
The PM092 is a storeroom function lock, so the outside lever stays locked and is retracted by key or by the electric signal. For classroom function, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch in the same thickness. Both are mechanical, so no power or wiring is required at the frame.
14) What mortise lock should I use on a dormitory or corridor door where the PM092 storeroom function is wrong?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lock in corridor/dormitory exit function from the 7900 series, with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. It suits an opening where the occupant needs to throw a deadbolt from inside. The PM092 is Grade 1 storeroom with a latchbolt controlled by key or electric signal, which fits a door that must stay secured against the corridor at all times.
15) Can I replace a PM092 with a BEST 45H mortise lock body?
Only if the function matches, and those two do not. The BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function and the 45HCAINL is a heavy duty lock body with intruder function, both field reversible. Neither is storeroom, and neither is electrified. If you are staying with BEST on an electrified opening, the 45HW wired electromechanical mortise lock is the one that matches the PM092's 12/24VDC operation.
16) Our door is thinner than 1-3/4 inch. Which mortise locks will still work?
The PM092 is built around a 1-3/4 inch door. If the leaf is thinner, the Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body is specified for doors 1-3/8 inch and over with a 2-1/2 inch backset, and the 6310190RRLS is the right hand reverse lever by lever version of the same body. Note the backset change: those Baldwin bodies are 2-1/2 inch where the PM092 is 2-3/4 inch, so the door and frame prep is not the same.
17) We need an RFID mortise lock for a classroom instead of a wired electric lock. What are the options?
The TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lockset with RFID technology in classroom function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the FME-4000 is the electronic intruder classroom version with RFID. The Dormakaba E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 electronic pushbutton and card back-to-back mortise lock in entry/egress. Any of those reads a credential at the door, whereas the PM092 relies on a 12/24VDC signal from an external access control system.
18) Will a Sargent 130KB thumbturn or a Falcon MESC600DT escutcheon trim work as a replacement for a PM092?
No. The Sargent 130KB is a standard mortise thumbturn and the 130W is a mortise thumbturn with a round backplate; those are trim pieces that mount to an existing lock. The Falcon MESC600DT is dummy escutcheon lever trim for M9900 series exit devices, with no latching mechanism at all. The PM092 is a complete Grade 1 keyed mortise lock with a lever and an electrically controlled outside lever, so none of those parts substitutes for it.
