Overview

Purpose-built to serve the commercial real estate, retail, multifamily and hospitality industries, Schlage Performance Series™ locks feature exceptional quality and style at a highly competitive price point. The PM Series offers 26 functions, including three electrified, and four mortise deadbolt functions, all made to meet Schlage’s rigorous quality standards. With popular levers and finish options, Schlage's full key system security line up, and its durable design, you can meet needs for both security and style. They are made to suite with other Allegion products to present a quality, complete door hardware solution and provide a consistent user experience throughout your building or complex. Better yet, you can suite the PM Series mortise locks with the PT Series tubular locks, as they share lever and rose styles.

Schlage PM453 ATHA 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage PM453 mortise lock fit a 2-inch thick door?
Yes, with a note on the order. The PM453 is built around 1-3/4 inch doors as standard, works down to 1-3/8 inch minimum, and fits doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick. Over 1-3/4 inches you have to specify the door thickness and the lock's position in the door, and that option is available in EE only.
2) What backset does the PM453 need, and will it drop into an existing ANSI mortise prep?
2-3/4 inch backset only, no 2-3/8 option. It ships with an ANSI curved lip strike 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches and a dust box, and the standard strike is the 10-072 square corner strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. So a door and frame already prepped to ANSI mortise standard with a 2-3/4 backset takes it. Worth knowing: PM Series case and cover holes differ from Schlage L Series, so an L Series pocket is not a straight swap for trim hole locations.
3) How does the PM453 entrance/office function actually work day to day?
Key cylinder outside, thumbturn inside. The lever on either side retracts the latchbolt when unlocked. Turning the thumbturn 20 degrees locks the outside lever only; turning it 90 degrees also throws the deadbolt. Key from outside retracts both bolts but the outside lever stays locked. The inside lever always retracts deadbolt and latchbolt for immediate egress, and the outside lever unlocks again once the thumbturn is back to vertical. One caution worth passing to tenants: leaving without fully rotating the thumbturn back to vertical can leave you locked out.
4) Does the Schlage PM453 come with a cylinder, or do I have to order one separately?
You choose. Five cylinder options are offered: P for a conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed to 5 pins, L for less conventional 6-pin cylinder, J for less full size interchangeable core, B for less small format interchangeable core, and T for an FSIC construction core. If you key your own building on SFIC or FSIC, order the less-cylinder prep and drop your core in. The P option is the one to pick if you want it arriving ready to key.
5) Is the PM453 an ANSI Grade 1 lock, and what function code is it?
Grade 1, commercial duty, and the ANSI/BHMA function is F20, entrance/office with deadbolt. That is the code to put on a hardware schedule if the spec calls for F20. The thumbturn style is ADA qualified.
6) Can I match the PM453 lever and finish to the other doors in my building?
Yes, and that is the point of the Performance Series. Ten lever designs are offered: Athens, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Neptune, Playa, Rhodes, Selena, Tubular and Two. Finishes are 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome and 643E aged bronze. Trim comes as an A, C or D rose or an N escutcheon. PM Series mortise locks share lever and rose styles with Schlage PT Series tubular locks, so interior doors on tubular prep can be matched to the mortise openings.
7) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage PM453 entrance/office mortise lock with deadbolt?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the nearest match in function class: it is a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, rated for 1-3/4 inch doors, the same door thickness the PM453 lists as standard and the same Grade 1 level. The difference to confirm before you swap is the deadbolt. The PM453 is built as an entrance/office function with a key cylinder outside, thumbturn inside, and a separate 1 inch throw stainless deadbolt alongside the latchbolt; the NM8050 is catalogued on its auxiliary deadlatch rather than a deadbolt. If the opening needs the thumbturn-thrown deadbolt, the PM453 function is the one that carries it.
8) We need a mortise lock with a deadbolt but the door is a dorm room corridor door, not an office. What should we look at instead of the PM453?
The Sargent 7925 is the dormitory-side answer. It is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lock in the 7900 Series with a dormitory exit function, rose trim, and a single cylinder deadbolt. The PM453 carries its deadbolt under an entrance/office function, where the outside lever is made inoperative when the deadbolt is thrown by key outside and rotating the inside thumbturn 90 degrees throws the deadbolt. Pick by how the room is meant to secure: occupant thumbturn control on the PM453, dormitory exit sequencing on the 7925.
9) Do I need to order the PM453 in a specific hand?
No. Handing is field reversible on the PM453, so one lock covers left and right hand openings and you can stock a single part number across a building.
10) Should I use an entrance/office lock with a deadbolt like the PM453 or a storeroom function?
Pick the PM453 when the occupant needs to control locking from inside. Key outside, thumbturn inside: staff can lock the outside lever, or throw the deadbolt, without a key. A storeroom function has no inside control, the outside lever is always locked and only a key gets you in, which suits closets and mechanical rooms. For a storeroom opening on mortise prep, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock. If you want the same PM Series entrance/office arrangement without a deadbolt, that is a different PM function number.
11) What other brands make an entrance/office mortise lock I could use instead of the Schlage PM453?
The closest cross-brand equivalent we carry is the Cal-Royal NM8050, a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors. If the opening is a classroom rather than an office, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors. For thicker doors, Hager's 3800 Series mortise locks cover 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inches, though the 3850E is an office function without a keyed cylinder and the 3810E and 3810S are passage, so neither gives you the PM453's deadbolt and key control.
12) Does the PM453 need power or wiring run to the door?
No. The PM453 is a mechanical lock, not electronic, so there is nothing to wire and no power supply or transfer hinge required. If you need credential or keypad access on a mortise prep instead, options we carry include the Schlage CO-100 standalone electronic mortise lock and the Schlage Electronics LEMD Grade 1 ENGAGE wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader.
13) If we do not need the deadbolt, is there a simpler mortise lock than the PM453?
Yes. The Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset, non-keyed, for doors 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch. It shares the 2-3/4 inch backset the PM453 is built on, so the door prep intent is the same family of opening, but it drops both the cylinder and the deadbolt. Use it where the room needs office-style lever control without keyed security; keep the PM453 where a key cylinder outside and a 1 inch throw deadbolt are required.
14) Is a mortise deadbolt like the Sargent 4874 a substitute for the PM453?
No, they solve different halves of the opening. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset from the 4870 Series, a deadbolt only with no lever and no latchbolt. The PM453 is a lever lockset that combines deadbolt, latchbolt and a deadlocking auxiliary latch in one case, with the latchbolt retracted by lever from either side. If a lever already exists on the door and you only need to add bolt security, the 4874 is the deadbolt-only part; if one case has to do both jobs, that is the PM453.
15) What mortise lock takes a storeroom function instead of the PM453 entrance/office function?
The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors. Storeroom keeps the outside lever locked at all times with key access only, while the PM453 lets the occupant unlock and lock the outside lever from the inside thumbturn and adds a deadbolt. For a supply or utility room that should never be left unlocked by an occupant, the storeroom function is the intent.
16) We want a bed/bath privacy lock with a deadbolt rather than a keyed entrance lock. What is the alternative?
The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy/bed/bath mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors. It carries the deadbolt like the PM453 and matches on Grade 1 and 1-3/4 inch door thickness, but it is a privacy function rather than keyed. The PM453 is keyed, with a key cylinder outside that retracts both deadbolt and latchbolt. Choose the NM8440 for a restroom or resident bath where no outside key operation is wanted.
17) Can an electronic mortise lock replace the PM453 on an office door?
It can, but the credential model changes. The Schlage Electronics CO-100 standalone electronic mortise lock is Grade 1 heavy duty for 1-3/4 inch doors with a keypad reader, and the ENGAGE Series LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a mobile-enabled deadbolt with LED, fire rated 3 hours. The PM453 is a mechanical lock with no electronics, keyed with a cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside. If the building wants audit trail or credential changes without rekeying, the electronic models are the path; if it is being suited into a mechanical key system, the PM453 stays mechanical.
18) Is the lock case protected against corrosion for a door that sees weather at the entry?
The case is cold rolled steel with corrosion resistant zinc dichromate plating, and both the deadbolt and the latchbolt are stainless steel. Levers are zinc, escutcheons are wrought brass and roses are brass.
19) Is there a Grade 1 mortise passage lock we can use on the interior doors to match a PM453 run?
The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock in the MA Series with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage function mortise lockset in stainless steel for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both are latch-only with no key and no deadbolt. The PM453 shares the field reversible handing and the Grade 1 level, so specifying a passage lock for closets and corridors alongside PM453 units on the secured openings keeps the whole run at Grade 1.
